HOB with tubing to reach bottom in terrarium

I mentioned this in my Palidarium post.

Basically I am trying to save some money on a new filter that the LFS recommended. Not sure if he was just trying to make a sale or just thought it wouldn't work. He told me I wouldn't be able to add a piece of hose on to the intake of my HOB and have it pull the water up, that it didn't have enough "suction". It is a little 118GPH filter I think by whisper or something. Have had it a few yrs now. I was in the store the other day to buy some rocks and bought a ft (99cents) to try it. Figured I had nothing to lose. I put it together (will have pics if anybody is interested), stuck the intake into the tank, and MAGIC!! It was cycling water through it like it had with the original intake on it.

Does anybody know if this is harder on the motor and maybe why he was recommending another filter (submersible with optional tube for waterfall effect).

Basically I am going to do what the filter he recommended for me, but save $30 as long as it keeps working.

Thanks for any input.

The farther the motor has to pull the water, the harder it has to work. I honestly don't know how well that will work out for you. Could work like a champ, or it might only run for a short while before overheating and dying on you.

Makes sense. And if he would've worded it like that, maybe I wouldn't have been so sarcastic in my email... either way, right now I don't have any fish or frogs and still in the setup process. I can leave it running and see how it does, if it dies, it dies, if not I can use it.

Thanks for the response
