1 big or 2 little?

Would it be better to have two small(er) HOB filters for my 55 gallon, or one large one able to handle the flow? The only advantage I'm seeing over just one is it'll be $15 cheaper

What we did w/ our 55 is we got a canister filter and a hob filter (the hob came w/ the tank and we are getting a biowheel that has a higher output and cleans a lot better)... the canister is a Ehiem....
for a 55 you really need the filitration, and it also depends on the fish you are stocking, we are stocking cichlids, and because of that we are doing strong overpowered filters, our Ehiem is made for up to a 100gallon tank, and the biowheel I am getting is made for a 75gallon tank....

2 smaller ones would be quieter, but i dont think it really matters that much

I'd recommend a Penquin Biowheel filter (or 2 of them) that outputs at least 550gph.

I was actually looking at Aquaclear filters. I've used one on my 10 gallon and really like it. I've never really looked at the Penguin biowheel but I hear about it a lot. I'll have to research both I guess

I've heard good about the Aquaclears too and might have gone with those now, but I just really liked the biowheel filtration.

How easy is the maintenance for the penguin biowheels? The Aquaclears are great because you just lift up the tray and can clean whatever you want separately.

I find the penquins really easy to clean. The biowheel lifts off easily and the filter media is easy to take out. Swish them around in some tank water and put them back. Nice and easy and they really are pretty quiet, the only real noise being the water splash and that just depends on how full the tank is.
