Please help! My filter is rattling.

Hi. I'd appreciate any help you can give me. I just got a used Odyssea B9 bowfront aquarium. It came with a filter that fits into the lid. The problem is that the filter rattles! A lot!

I took out the magnetic twirly thing (?) and cleaned it a bit, but this doesn't seem to have helped. I also tried "burping" the whole unit, but it still rattles.

My questions:

Do I just have a rattling filter?
If I replaice the magnetic twirly piece, will it run more smoothly?
If I need to replace the filter, is there one I should look at?

This is just a freshwater tank - something for me and my 4-year-old daughter to mess with. We've currently got an algea eater, a black molly, and a couple of platys in there. Obviously, we're complete amatures, so any help you could give us would be appreciated!

Welcome to Fishlore!

I'm unsure about that kind of filter, but there are a few things you can check. First, check all of the places where the filter comes into contact with the aquarium or the lid. Try wedging pieces of paper towel or anything else soft (I usually use cut-off bits of filter floss) between the filter and these contact points. Similarly, try adjusting and readjusting any removable parts. If there's a lid, take that off to see if it makes noise. Press down on the intake spout.
If any of this stops the noise, you'll know where it's coming from, then we can help you quiet it more permanently.

Also, are you positive it's not another piece of equipment? On one of my aquariums, it sounded like the filter was noisy, but the problem was that the cord from the air pump kept bumping up against the filter, vibrating the whole thing.

Welcome to Fishlore.

Does it still rattle if the lid is off the filter?
