Well, we didn't go w/ the marieland, we got a EHEIM ecco... was it a good choice

We got to the store to buy our cichlids today (our first few for our 55g tank) and got to looking over the filter systems and I have read so much about the Eheims and price wise we would have spent that on the marineland w/ shipping and all so I talked my husband into the Eheim Ecco for our tank. The people at the fish store (very reput. business in our area) said that was their fav our of all the brands as I looke through them. Its the Ecco for a 60 gallon tank, canister. My question is for those of you who have experience w/ them how are they holding up??

Hope it helps.

Hi. I just went through what you did -- which Eheim to purchase. I researched like crazy, made some phone calls. It seems, as the links above show, that people aren't very happy with Ecco. I was told that "Ecco" stands for economy, although that's not really what Eheim says.

Most companies, even the best of the best, it seems make a "cheap" version so they can target all price ranges.

It reminds me of when I bought my Henckels knife set. Initially I bought the 5 knives for 100 bucks or whatever it was. I was so excited because I know they make such high-end products, only to find out the ones I bought were terrible, wouldn't hold edge. I exchanged them for their top-of-line. Now, that was better and what I had expected from their reputation.

So, I finally ended up telephoning bigalsonline to find out their opinion and what I should do. I ended up buying the Eheim Pro 2026 for my 75 gallon tank. He said Pro and Classic are basically same except Pro much easier to maintain. So, if you are looking to exchange, I would look at classic. I heard you will not regret buying the classic.

Best of luck. I"m doing cichlids, too.
