I was wondering if it would be wise/work for me to set the media up like this: Sponge that came with filter, Bio-Balls (that I already own...), and then the ceramic stones that came with the filter. So I guess, I'm mainly asking about the use of bio-balls like this.

I don't see a problem with it as long as you ensure the water flow is still good. I have all three filtration inserts from a aquaclear and filter fiber in my penguin bio-wheel and have no problems.
