Any suggestions on good filters available?

Hi again! I've been using a duetto 50 filter in my7.5gall tank for about a year now and have swaped it once before during that year as the other stopped working, but i found with both that they clogged up easily and almost always need cleaning. It's really getting to be an annoying job to do now with all my school work to concentrate on and wondered if anyone had any suggestions on a reliable and quiet filter that i could get at a reasonable price?
It'd be gd if i could find it in an lfs somewhere but i dnt mind buying online if i need to as long as it's from a site that ships to the UK. (obviously!, or it would be no gd in another country! ).

thanks

Hey Gwenz,
Maybe a Hydor, Hagen or Eheim? Also Marineland.. if you could find any of those brands at your LFS, they'd be good. It would be the best if you could find a Marineland HOB filter with a biowheel.

ok. thanks for the suggestions dave. I'll see if i can find any of those. 1 question, how do HOB's work? do they hook over the top of the tank(half outside)? I've always wondered... if thats what they are i can't use them cause the lid won't close.

Yea, they do hang on the back of the tank, so there has to be a hole in the lid for it. If that doesn't work for your tank, then those same brands in submersible filters will be your route to go.

yea, went to the lfs tonight and bought an ELite Stingray 10. I have the "5" version already (never used and probably never will cause it came with a tank i bought off E-bay and loooks used so don't want to use it incase the person who used it had some illness in that could spread through the filter.) anyway, the "5" verion is only suitable for tanks up to 5 gall anyway so i got the "10" verion (up to 10gall tanks) for the 7.5gall. I hope it's good - anyone ever used one?

Anyway, would it be ok now to just put the sponges from the duetto into the stingray so that it's automatically cycled? I'd have to cut the sponges to fit, but that's no problem right?

thanks again

Yea, you can put the sponges in to keep the mini-cycle to a minimum. Or even just shove them under some gravel.
