Filter Floss in a Wisper power filter

Can I use just filter floss in my Whisper HOB filter? It seems like since I'm not using carbon in the filters that just a big wad of filter floss would work. Would there be any problems with this?

There would be no problem using filter floss in a hang on the back.
I have several in which we do that very things here in the fishhouse.

Our tanks all just have a cut piece of filter floss and a filter sponge or 2 in them and do fine.

I have a few whisper hob filters and I use filter floss in them. It's a LOT cheaper, and cleans the tanks just as well!

Thanks for the reassurance everyone. I have just added another whisper to my 55 gal and filled it with filter floss. So now I have a whisper 30 I think with floss in it and a whisper 60 with the standard cartradges in both sides. The wisper 60 is starting to get clogged but I don't want to switch those filters over to floss until the floss in the 30 starts to get bacteria forming. Any idea how long I should wait to switch over the 60s filters?

take the filters floss from the 60 and replace it and take the old filter media and place it in front of the new so the water flows by it and pushes the bacteria from the old one in to the new one.. and you can cut a peice off the top that will stick out and place it in to the new wisper you just got

yup that would work great. or you can just change one of the filters in the 60.

I replace 1 chunk of filter floss a week in my big tank (with 2 whisper 60s running) that way the tank doesnt go through a mini cycle, but the filter floss gets replaced once its too dirty to be rinsed clean anymore.
Hope this helps!

just for info purposes, it takes about 2 to 3 weeks to develop a good amount of bacteria. that is why i use sponges, i have some sponges that are several yrs old and still do the job. a quik rinse in old tank water during a water change and they are good to go...you cna even do this weekly if you like, with no worries. if i do have to change out a sponge i cut it in half using half the old and the new, after several weeks change out the other half. so economically speaking the sponges give ou more for your money.

I use sponges in my HOB filters also but usually add a wad to the filter along with the sponge after stirring the sand up.
