ya ferrets are so adorable...but they kind of stink so my mom would never let me have one

Actually, there is a cheap surgery you can get to remove most of the stink. Then you just bathe them weekly or so and they don't smell so bad

At least, that's how it is with my friend's ferret.

Hi all,

I've got two ferrets. One male, one female about a year old. Both have been altered and descented. Unless you get a ferret directly from a breeder, this is done prior to your purchase. As far as the surgery goes, it's anything but cheap......However, if your ferrets have been 'fixed' and you're dilligent and change their bedding regularly, there's virtually no odor. I change their bedding weekly and wash it separate from the laundry using Downy.

They are completely litter box trained to the point that when they are out for a romp and have to go, they run back to their cage, do their business and off they go again! Very easy to train. It took me about two weeks to train them both.

An important word of advice for those who own ferrets - You NEVER want to bathe a ferret weekly. In fact, you only want to bathe them up to 3 to 4 times/yr MAXIMUM. It's too much for their coat and it will dry their skin sometimes causing them to lose their coat. Instead what you can do is get a deodorizing, moisturizng spray that you mist onto their coat and then brush them. This will keep them smelling fresh and their skin moist. I use 8in1 Ferret Deodorizing Spray and a soft bristle ferret brush. I spray them once a week and it works well.

I bathe my ferrets every 3 - 4 months using ferret shampoo and rinse them with clean water and a little bit of Avon Skin-So-Soft in the rinse water. It's perfectly safe and gentle enough for them to handle. Never use anything made for dogs or adult cats. The formulas are far too strong for a ferret's system to handle. If the product is safe for kittens, then it's generally safe for ferrets, but I try to stick strictly to ferret products.

These are my 3rd & 4th ferrets and they are a TON of fun! Very intelligent and highly social animals who constantly seek your approval.

Personally, I'd feed them ferret food....I feed mine one a special organic diet made by The Ferret Store...Superior natural Choice. It has no corn meal unlike kitten food and is easier for them to digest...Stay away from Marshall Ferret food...It will make them double their bowel movements......Not sure what they eat over seas....

They are extremely intelligent, sensitive and highly social animals and make SUPER pets. I litter trained my two in about 2 weeks. It just took finding the right type of litter box and litter. One liked the original box, the other didn't. Once we had that figured out, we were in business. Now I can let them out of the cage and when they need to do their business, they run back to the cage and go in their box....Very, VERY rarely do they have an accident. They're 3 years old.

Isabella, can you even have ferrets in NY? For some reason, I thought they were against the law for some completely ridiculous reasons.....I especially love the one about how they eat small children....That's my favorite ultra-myth.....If you can do it, get one...Two is better for social reasons, but if you can only do one,I highly recommend it. The reason I saw two is because sometimes one will get board and there is a chance that depression can set in. The two I have are my 3rd & 4th. This is the first time I've ever had two at the same time and I will never have only one again...In fact, I'd love to get one more but my wife would kill me!!

Vin, I don't even know what the law is towards ferrets in NY ... and frankly ... I don't care! If I decided to get one, I'd do anything to get it. When it comes to animals, there are no boundaries for me, lol. For example, if I left the 3 squirrels that I found alone, they'd be dead long ago. Their mother was dead and they still needed to be fed with milk. Otherwise they'd die. The winter was coming and they were still babies. The law in NY forbids keeping squirrels in the house. If I listened to that law, they'd be dead. Now, they're alive and well. Yes, I don't like the idea of keeping squirrels in the house, but it's better than being dead. Now, they can be safely released back into the wild. At least they have a chance at life. So, like I said, I don't care about the law when it comes to animals, and especially animals in need. I can't help loving them. And besides, how can you walk away from a baby squirrel crying out of hunger and looking at you with those poor tiny beautiful eyes? Ya know ... I can't

Besides, I'm happy for you (that you have ferrets, that is). I can't imagine how much fun they must be I also like to keep animals in pairs for social reasons. No creature should ever be alone. Animals need companions too. That's why I have 2 cats instead of 1.

Yeah, I wouldn't get just one anymore. Two is so much better. As for the squirrel, I understand you were trying to help, but the truth of the matter is, that you may have done just as much harm to them. This is because they now have a human imprint on them. They see you as an equal species, their mother in effect. They haven't had a chance to use their natural instincts on their own and may not survive in the wild as a result. I've come across baby squirrels before and have brought them to the local wildlife center where they know how to go about taking care of them and releasing them back into the wild.

okay,,this post is almost a year later.... but what the heck... We have had many ferrets. They are carniverous and will eat mice when given the chance. They are also very intelligent and can open small cage doors.. such as you would keep a pet mouse in!!! yep... they like hamsters, too!!! We learned our lesson after that and no longer kept any rodents, except for the guinea pigs. But they were well out of reach!!! lol
