I have 3 baby yellow lab cichlids and they are all born within a month or two. However I've noticed that on two of mine they are developing a black colored line through their body. Does this mean they are a different type? or are they maybe a different sex? Ive never seen a yellow lab with a stripe that runs from head to tail fin in the middle of their sides.

Also, the fin above their heads is MUCH more pronounced in one of the fish... Does this mean anything?

Am I just over observing and are these differences just like the difference between blonds and brunets in the human world? lol

Thanks

Folks, I think I have a fish in trouble. My 65g with assorted Africans has done very well. Minimal violence and most residents are even "friendly" toward one another.

One of the earliest inhabitants, a Cobalt Zebra (Metriaclima callainos) was once the dominant animal in the tank - harassing all comers and generally a bully - even to the larger Kenyi (Metriaclima lombardoi). Suddenly, over a week ago, he essentially "retired" to the rocks and pretty much does not come out, even to feed.

He shows absolutely no sign of physical damage, nor does he exhibit any other visible sign of trouble - other than his being a complete recluse. He literally has not taken nourishment in over a week.

I once cursed his aggressive nature, now I'm afraid he is dying. He truly is one of the prettiest fish I have. I'd hate to lose him.

Any ideas?

I cant find much about them online and they are just juveniles at the moment (I have 2) but if they cant stay in a community set up then I will have to get them a nice big tank of their own (wouldnt that be a shame ;))

I look forward to your reponses!

Hello

I want to set up a malawi tank. My water readings from the tap, de-chlorinated and allowed to stand are:

pH 7.6 - 8.0
KH somewhere between 100 - 180
GH 250

Are any of these going to prove detrimental to cichlids and if so how do you change them/maintain them.

The articles I have read all talk about products not available on my island. The only product available here is a water softener ! Also no idea where to get crushed oyster shells etc.

Articles are good at saying for example.... take it slowly when adding epsom salts... but what does that mean? add it over a few days? add it all in one go?.... ambigious for a complete novice (or a particularly stupid one perhaps?)

I want to do this right lol

Thanks Helene

( now with 6 tanks and a grumpy husband )

Okay so I have a six gallon with three julies in it. I am almost positive that they are the Julidochromis ornatus. They are still juvinile and about 1.25 inches long. Well one of them is a agressive to another. What i think it is, is that I have two males and one female. I think this becuase the agressor only goes after one other, and some one has dug out the sand to form a small cave. I know that these guys breed in caves, but Im not usre if they are old enough yet. These are my fist Afrcian Cichlid, so I might just be paranoid. They seem to feed together nicely, but when it gets later in the evening, the agressor is a total bully. Any help would be sweet, especialy if you have had these guys before.
Thanks

If you can name a cichlid, it will be represented in some way at this show. Its the largest Cichlid Convention in the US and it is always a BLAST. Banquet, Fish Show, Speakers, Auction...it has it all. Anyone going?

I havn't made up my mind yet, as i'm dedicating most of my time to the Discus show only a month ahead of this one, but I am trying my best to be there.

Lots of great speakers lined up like Ad Konings and Oliver Lucanus.

So my green severum and convict cichlid were recently removed from my 75 gallon tank after they started killing all the other little fish (Swordtails, Danios, etc.). I now realized my they got so mean. After I took them out I caught my synodontis eating a bunch of eggs attached to the bottom of the castle bubbler. I wasn't able to save any eggs though:-[ Now they are in their own tank. Do you think they will breed again? They are not fighting (a good sign?) and they share a piece of PVC pipe. The severum is about 5 inches and the convict (female) is just over 3 inches. Has anyone had this happen before?
