Question: Acclimating to the Light

My Jack Dempsey is making great steps. He now swims all over the tank. The thing is, he is mostly only active when the hood light is turned off. I would have thought with him being an older fish that he would have been used to a light on. When I turn the light off he immedietly comes out (even if I am standing right infront of the tank). He also hits the food the instant it touches the water when the light is off, and will not eat if the light is on. I want to acclimate hime to the light but I am not sure exacly how to do it. As of now my routine is to turn the light on when I wake up at 7am and leave it on until I go to bed around 1am, when i turn it off. If anyone has experienced this I would appreciate any information. I have had him for three weeks now, by the way.

Also just a sidenote, new 60 gallon tank is on way for him to have all to himself!!!!
Do you think the small fish will be alright or should I try and seperate them? They have been in the tank for an hour with no problems. For right now they are in a 30 gallon tank. They are going to be moved into a 55 gallon tank in the next month or so. Thank you for your time. Lee:;f

He is still very shy and does not get excited at feeding time, will not eat until I am out of room and lights are off.

Thank you all so much for your help! He is already beginning to come out and wonder about. Although, I am beginning to wonder if he is in fact a pure blod Jack Dempsey, given the large bridge on his nose. Never-the-less, I love him. He is perfect. Unfortunatly he is older and without knowing his age he may already be on his final days (hope not). Bellow are some new video of him where you can see his colors clearer. Thank you all again.

As you all know Jack Dempseys love to burrow in a cave like formation. The problem that I am having is finding an object large enough for my 9" Jack Dempsey. I have seen many pictures of aquariums containing large flower potts providing this cavernous appeal. My question is if you find these potts safe for aquarium use? I have hear rumors that they might possibly leak toxins into the tank causing harm to your fish. If you have any information, or experience with this situation, I would appreciate your knowledge on the matter.

I just got a new Jack Dempsey. He is in a 30 gallon long by himself. I bought him at an older age, unsure what his actual age is but he measures at 9inchs. I introduced him to the tank Monday evening, it is now Saturday. I floated him for around 20 mins in bag in tank to acclimate him to water. The problem I am having is that he is extremily shy. I realize that most of you will say that he is in a tank that is too small but I asure you this is not a regular 30 gallon and he has tons of swimming room. He does not get excited at feeding time (I put food in and he does not eat until nobody is in room and lights are off), he lays on bottom behind log with abdominal fins touching gravel, and he will occasionally come out and float at 45 degree angle to side (maybe displaying colors). He was very active at the store and loved feeding time. Is this normal, will it just take more time for him to acclimate?

I got a pair of JD's from a friend a little over a month ago. They've always been shy, but before my friend rescued them, they had been in REALLY POOR conditions. I put two female cons in the JD tank because the cons were getting beat up (literally) in my 75g Malawi tank.

Since I've put the two cons in the tank (about 4 hours ago), the JD's have been coming out A LOT MORE. I've seen them outside their caves more in the last 4 hours than I have in the last two months.

I just thought it was kinda funny because I never thought of cons as dither fish:;laughing. Mine are usually better at starting trouble than making other fish feel safe;)

Hello all, it has been a long time since I have posted anything here at fishlore. I have been busy with upgrading and preparing myself for my new job. But now that I have my new job, it looks like I am going to be away from home 80% of the year, and I will not have anyone to look after my little buddies.

I am not looking for money, but someone who has the room and passion for these fish. I am at work right now, so I can not go into much detail, but Ill have time this afternoon to grab some pics and list all the details. I just wanted to see if there was anyone on fishlore (aka fish lovers) who had any interest. I live in London Ontario Canada and will gladly give these beautiful fish to anyone who has the room and knows how to keep them. I also have a lot of equipment/food/caves to go along with them. Full details will be listed this afternoon. Please if you live in the area and have room, I need someone who cares. I never thought I was going to have to send these guys away.

Cheers,

Dave

Good day Experts,

Please could you help WRT below?

I have got a Jack Dempsey (Approx 4inch) & Tiger Oscar (T O) (Approx 4inch).
They are new tankmates (T O newest member) My JD constantly chases the T O arround in the tank, however no biting. The JD was a nervous nelly until I introduced T O - now it seems that my JD turned psycho. My tank has got a few hiding places (Caves, plants, ETC.)

Does this mean I have to get rid of one or is there another remedy for them to become best friends.

Many thanks in advance &

Best rgds
