I read on another forum about using a feeding dish, and I thought I might share it here because I thought it was such a great idea.

I know a lot of goldfish, especially fancies, are prone to swim bladder problems, and that feeding floating pellets is not ideal because they could swallow air with the pellet. But floating pellets are easier because then it is easier to clean up after.

So the idea behind this feeding dish is that you find a flower pot base (the type that you use to collect water under a pot) of a safe material with decently high sides. You can put a small amount of gravel on it to keep it in place if it floats or moves around. Then use some sort of tubing, or undergravel filter tube.
Then you can put the sinking pellets in the tube and put the tube over the 'plate' and it puts the pellets directly on the plate.

This way you can see how many pellets are left, and just do a quick suction to get them out! Keeps it from getting all caught up in the gravel.
You can even have 2 if you have a sight challenged fish, like separate food dishes!

Here is the link to the original idea: http://www.kokosgoldfish.invisionzon...-feeding-dish/

I have 2 Black Moor goldfish that I recently moved out of a 30g hexagon tank into a 30g regular tank. I moved their filter, ornaments, plants and most of their gravel over with them and at first they were doing great...

However, the smaller of the two has been spending a lot of time on the bottom of the tank and he just doesn't seem right. His name is Halloween and he is about 2yrs old and is black and orange, the older one, Gramps, is about 5yrs and is all black (I rescued them from being flushed when I bought their tank on craigslist!!!) and they are my only coldwater fish.

Anyway, Gramps keeps hovering over Halloween and stays pretty close to him when he is on the bottom of the tank. I did a water change, added prime and just added some Stress Coat+. :-\

Not sure why this is happening or if there is much I can do for this poor guy...

Any advice is appreciated! :;thx

Charlie is getting fairly large (3" or so) so should I be looking for new guys that are near his size? I saw some pretty cute babies last night that were only a couple cm long and I'm thinking that would be too small... yes or no?

A few weeks ago (like the middle of last month) I replied to an add on kijiji for someone who wanted to get rid of their pond goldies for the winter. I never got a responce back until today. Apparently they've sold their large aquarium (wanted to spend more time with the grandkids) and are looking to give away the last two large fish. 1 is a large common goldi and the other is a long fin comet... Now I've only got Charlie in the 56 right now. But I don't know. I'd like to take them but I'm worried that a) They'll be too large for my tank and I don't have a pond (and won't be getting one in the near future). b)They might bother Charlie and c) adding two large fish to the 56 will be too much of a shock to my bio load.
What do you guys think?

Can a goldfish handle it? I got a heater for my goldfish aquarium because the tank temperature would start at 78 degrees in the morning then rise to 82 by late afternoon. I didn't think my fish could deal with that so I keep the tank at a warm 82. Lucy suggested that a goldfish may be able to handle that daily range of temperature changes. Is that true? I want Molly (my black moor) to be as comfortable as possible.:)

I feel really bad for my red cap oranda--she's been chased around by three males for weeks now.

One morning about a month ago, I found her floating on top of the water with all her tail-fin chewed up. She spent time in quarantine, gained her strength back and has started to grow her fins slowly but surely. I spent a lot of time trying to diagnose the problem, and I've concluded that she was chased around by males who were trying to spawn and got picked on by others in her compromised state. I had witnessed some of them in a spawning action a few times prior, and there were a koi three times her size and other faster and bigger common goldfish in the tank.

Since then I relocated the koi and the fast swimming kids to a larger container pond, and Jill the oranda is back in the tank doing well. Of five of them now in the tank, three are definitely male with distinct tubercles, and they just seem to love Jill--especially this fantail who won't leave her alone!

Is this because their seasonal clock is messed up from being indoors? Are they still young and can't quite get it done? How long will this have to go on?

Maybe she really was healthy along despite the tank cycling. What do you think? :;scuba

Hello everyone!

I'm still new here, so I'm sorry if I post anything wrong, but please hang in there with me! (Oh and.. I'm Swedish, so apologies if any terms I use are confusing! )

Nearly a year ago me and my boyfriend got my little sister a much-asked birthday present; a goldfish.
We bought a 5 liter bowl (yes, I know..bowl..) green grain and two plants.
We went to the pet store and saw all kinds of tiny wee little goldfishies... even one with a Mohawk!
We thought that one was perfect... But instead, the shopkeeper gave us a somewhat older looking bigger 'koi'-colored goldfish instead.
Just as happy we brought him home, my boyfriend keeping the little fishie warm under his coat because it was freezing! (New years eve, ofcourse!)
We settled him in that same day, and he seemed very happy.
He was named Sushi by my happier-than-happy little sister.
He ended up on a little cabin in my sister's room, and changed the tank water regularly to keep it as clean as possible.
The bowl eventually ended up on the kitchen table though. :;fg

We just moved him to a bigger tank this week (54 liter) and he seems to be quite a bit more lively, but he still has the upside down problem.
I was wondering if there could be any other things causing this, so I was really curious if it was maybe species-specific.. But I can't find seem to find out what type of goldfish he is!
He seems a little lonely, and I want to get other fish-friends for him.. But we need to sort out his health first, I think.
The new tank's temperature is 22.9 Celcius, has proper filtering and everything that comes with it. Except a heating element, we left that one out.
I'm new to this, but my mother's had tanks before, so we put everything up together.

It's probably really obvious what kind of goldfish exactly he is, but we're all getting confused by his tail.
We would really appreciate it if anyone could help us out!
Sorry for the huuuge chunk of text, but thanks for reading!

Ofcourse, before I forget, the pictures!
It'd be kinda hard to tell what he is otherwise.. haha!

Sushi 1
Sushi 2
Sushi 3

And one where he does his "upside down" thing.
Sushi Upside Down

Thanks in advance for answering, and nice to meet you everyone!

A while back I posted about my family having 2 goldies that were both living in bowls. Well, a tragedy struck with my own fish and I now have an empty tank, but it is only 5 gallons and that is nowhere near big enough for the goldies to both live in.

I am gonna either A) ask for a 20 gallon kit for x-mas for the goldies, or B) Sell my 5 gallon/filter/decorations and see if I can't find a cheap 20 on craigslist.

The goldies are a comet and a common goldie. The comet, Gus, has lived a remarkable 4 years in his little bowl (my mom does weekly water changes, but its not enough obviously). The common goldie, Gromit, was actually a feeder fish my mum randomly decided to save. He's been around for about 1 year. Both are doing well somehow, despite less-than-ideal conditions.

My mom's afraid to move the goldies to a bigger tank because of all the problems I've had with my filtered, cycled tanks :/ She's of the "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" mentality when it comes to this. Don't get me wrong, she LOVES these goldfish and doesn't intentionally do the wrong thing.

So... here's hoping for a nice x-mas present xD
