I have a community tank with 3 guppies and 2 platys. They have all been together for about 2 weeks with no problems but for some suddenly tonight one of the platys is chasing the other and kissing or nipping or something the other one. Its doing it to the other platy's mouth and body, not fins or tail. Are they playing or eating each other? Not sure if they're male or female. The one being "kissed" doesn't seem exceptionally bothered. Thanks!

I'm not sure how advanced fish social psychology is, but I thought I'd put this out there for some experts to answer.

I have a female platy in a hospital tank (tiny). I have 2 males in the regular tank (6 gal). I've found a good home elsewhere for one of the males. (I plan to have a couple for a month, an then keep one of the females from the ensuing brood.) Hand-off is on Tuesday

When would be the best time to move the female from the hospital tank?

A. Right away, she doesn't have room to swim around and needs it badly (not to mention with no bio-media she's tolerating ammonia/um, and the water changes will be a hassle)

B. It doesn't matter too much, but give them a chance to readjust to the pre-hospitalization arrangement before making a big social change like someone moving out.

C. Wait until you take the male out, and put her in right then. Keep all the change in one event.

D. I have a better idea (describe):

Thanks!

OK. I'm way cornfused.

If you put your fish in a hospital tank, assuming it's a fairly small tank, and your'e supposed to medicate for, say, two weeks, and the medication is supposed to get to a certain concentration, how do you manage your water parameters in the hospital tank? Especially if it's an antibiotic that kills the good bacteria? You can't change the water without taking the medication out, but your fish is still peeing in the pool.

(Re)medicate the new water? Dump a half a bottle of Prime into the hospital tank? Is this a product shortfall?

Over the last few days I've noticed that the top fin on one of my platies is slowly starting to disappear and the back fin is becoming pointy. I thought it might be one of the zebra danios fin nipping, but they all tend to leave the poor platy alone. It appears to have a hard time swimming to the mid and upper parts of the tank and stays closer to the gravel. All other fish seem to be doing okay.

Any ideas what's wrong and how to cure the little guy?

OK, we had babies about a month ago. We kept 1. The 2 parents, male & female were fine by themselves (LFS said we had 3 females. 1 died, and we were left with 1 of each.) The baby has, in the last week or so, reached manhood.

I have a stressed out mom.

I recently began dropping, very gradually, the (Aquarium) salt content of the water because the snails were holed up. It worked. The snails are zooming around the tank snarfing anything green. I really wanted to find out if there was something wonky with my water or if it was just the salt getting to the snails. Ergo:

I have a stressed out mom (although it doesn't appear to have affected the males at all).

Upon my discovery of the cute, fuzzy, teddy-bear state of this mom fish, (within 10 minutes) I had her in a 1 gal glass pickle jar with a bubble filter and a heater. About 30 minutes later I dosed her with Maracyn Two. I didn't stop to read the internet, I just cruised to Petsmart and got whatever said dropsy on it.

I though about it, and put in 3 small aquarium salt crystals and 4-5 Epsom salt crystals.

Now that she's in her own space, she seems happy as a clam. She's eating (she never really stopped), goofing off, having the time of her life, at least recent life. She apparently is loving teasing the boys, cuz they're all bundled up and mad, looking at her, scolding me every time I go peek at them.

I should note one thing. I haven't been noticing her poop. I generally just check to make sure I've seen some poop hanging off one or two of the fish. I give them green flakes, mostly, so constipation hasn't been an issue. It doesn't look like constipation bloat, though. Her scales actually look like they're retaining water.

1. What do you think her odds of survival are?

2. Should I try something else to treat her (in the morning)?

3. Could the stress and salt reduction do this on their own?

4. If it's viral, I wonder if she got our H1N1. It might sound goofy, but why not? We just got over it. Cats, pigs.... I'm betting it's a virus that doesn't care much what it eats.

5. Can sex just go away, please? It's so freakin problematic. I mean, people can have babies when they want to, not by oops. No more jealous rages, soap operas, embarrassed, stinky teenage boys, and my fish would be happy. I swear, I'm beginning to think Utopia = no testosterone. (I'm kidding. But it's worth thinking about.)

0 PPM on everything but Nitrates, which are, and have been around 10ppm.
200-ish GH. 78.5-80 degrees, but I check it lots. It's as consistent as I can get it. It's a 6 gal, so everything is a little more difficult to keep balanced.

******************

OK. I think the young male is looking a little bloated now, too. He might just be full of food, but I'm suspicious. Do I move him, or just treat the whole tank, snails and all?

My platy fry is almost 2 months old. We had 5 and I have released all but 1 into my big tank. The ones I have released are doing great. However the one I still have in the breeder is extremly small. Hes active and likes to eat hes just a runt.

1.) Is there anything I can do/give my runt to help him grow faster. He eats every few hours (just like the other ones did when they were in the breeder)

2.) The fry dont have any color yet they are just pale white but they do have there black fins (sooo cute) mom is orange, a little white and some black---dont know about dad. When should my babies get color?

3.) Im sure that they will inbreed correct since they are all in the same tank? So the mother will breed with the fry? At what age will this start to occur?

and last but not least lol

4.) When should I be able to tell the sex of the fry?

Hi im new to here. I have been keeping tropical fish for about a year now. We recently bought a new large tank (65litre) and set it up as per directions.

We gradually introduced the fish into the new tank and alls been well. Nitrates are normal, Ammonia normal, pH 7.2, nirites normal and the temps is set at 24. Wer have the water tested by our local aquactic centre where we get our fish from to make sure it is done correctly. Do a 30% water change every week.

I have noticed over the last couple off days our female palties spine is curving, she had a fry off about 14 babies 16 weeks ago and some have actually been rehomed (7 to be exact. As they was a good size over 1 inch long) She is eating normally. Her front fins (or arms as i call them) seem to be disappearing, also the top off her mouth looks a bit white, shes lost weight and her eyes seem to be bullging a bit.

Please can anyone help. I have seperated her from the other fish at the moment to be on the safe side. We did loose a neon tetra last week he lost his colour and had pop eye and was a bit deformed.
