Heya, recently purchased someones old tank, which basically came with nothing.

The tank is 170 litres, 48x12x18. Will not have any live plants in it.

The lighting system I'm after is:
Hagen Aquaglow 30watt x 36inch
Arcadia Control Unit 25/30 watt for 30-36inch tubes

I'm not sure if the different brands will work together, or if it is high enough wattage for my tank?

Also, will I need to buy a longer length? (might seem like a silly question but someone mentioned they use a smaller length for their tank).

Iv'e read the help page on lighting and understood most of it but I'm still a bit new to all this and would appriciate advice!

Hi again all.

after recently setting up my 63L planted Tank and spending a fortune on lighting upgrades, i have been trying to find a way of upgrading the light on one of my larger tanks ready for my next project.

After seeing some of the DIY stuff on here I went to the local hardware store and got some new fittings. I have fitted 2x Bayonet fittings, The bulbs are "Natural Daylight" Spiral Energy Saving bulbs Bulbs. They are 12w each but the equivalent to a normal 60w bayonet, which value do I use to work out the watts per gallon?

I am wondering if I should add the 15W T8 setup that I have left over from my other tank or if the lighting that I have just fitted will be enough.

Thanks again everyone in advance for any help and advice.

mark

I have a "hand-me-down" Oceanic 55 Gallon tank that I'm setting up (freshwater). The light it has is pretty old and can't be connected to a timer. Any suggestions for a 48" light? I may eventually want to have live plants. Right now, I'm just going to get started with some artificial plants.

I've looked at the Nova Extreme (model 1129). It has two bulbs. One pink and one white. It has a total of 108 watts. Anyone familiar with this fixture or can anyone suggest a good light for my tank?

Here's a link to the Extreme.

I am considering adding some common plants to my 75G freshwater community tank but am having a hard time finding info about my particular light fixture. I have a 48" Perfecto fixture that sits atop a glass top. It is the type with the reflectors in it. It hold only one flourescent bulb. Everything I read says to shoot for 4 watts per gallon as a minimum. What type of a bulb would I need? How much does the reflectors amplify the bulb's wattage?"
