I need some advice for my HC. I'm trying to have the HC cover my aquarium but it's not doing that exactly. It spreads some but then it comes up out of the flourite showing the roots and all. The bulk of it is still planted, which is at least keeping the bunches anchored, but almost half of a bunch comes out of the flourite.

Anybody know why and how I get it back in? Maybe the cory's? I don't know.

I know live plants are helpful in aquariums. I have them in just about every aquarium I own. Never really thought of it much because it is a no-brainer unless species I keep eat them.

Since then, I started writing an online bioload calculator and tried to figure out what would be the effect of plants on the bioload. Many many people have been suggesting that I should add this "feature". Yes, plants do absorb _some_ toxic chemicals excreted by fishes, including ammonia and nitrates. On the other hand, I also read that fishes produce plenty more toxic chemicals/toxins that are not absorbed by plants.

So here's my ultimate question - can you keep more fishes in planted tanks? If so, WHY?

I always thought of having plants as a safety net rather than a mean to increase the total bioload of my tanks. But I would gladly stand corrected if this is not the case. :)

I have turned my fish tank into a moss tank for shrimps and guppies.

The question I have is if moss will grab on the rock that it is placed on. Currently I have them tied with red thread and the red makes it look really artificial. I was wondering if sometime later I can take the threads ouit and the moss will still stay on the rock.

The moss and that I have is java moss and I have weeping moss coming soon.
Thanks

Also any good or bad info about the company would be appreciated.
It's doing well in the tank (so far). The guy in the LFS said it was Rotala, but when I looked in "plantgeek", it doesn't look like any variety of rotala that I can see.

What do you think?
PS: some ends had tiny pink/lavender flowers on the tips. But now they're going away.

Hey guys! I haven't been on here in so long. :( Anyway the weirdest thing happened in one of my tanks. I noticed a while back that some of my guppy grass (which at the time had grown so well it nearly took over the entire tank) was dying. I thought it was because I was so busy I hadn't done a water change in a couple weeks & the plants must have run out of nutrients (of course I promptly did a wc w/ normal doses of ferts). Well during the past few weeks rather than coming back, my entire tankful of guppy grass has died. It just turns dark brown and disintigrates. I've never seen anything like it.

It's obvious to me something's killing it, because I haven't changed anything in that tank. I thought it might be something toxic in my water, but the black phantoms & other plants (java ferns) are doing great. Anyway I have guppy grass in another tank and no signs of it dying.

Has anyone ever seen anything like this? Again all my parameters are the usual and the other fish and plants are healthy. Just a massive amount of guppy grass that was previously thriving has all died in a short amt of time.

Btw I'm leaving for a field study in the Fl Everglades tomorrow so I won't be able to reply for a while. Just thought I'd post now while I have some time. Any input would be very appreciated, this really has me stumped....

When your in the hobby long enough you are bound to get a snail outbreak.

A few months back I had a rough time getting the snails out of one of my tanks from a plant I purchased at the LFS. I did all the suggestions including buying a few yo-yo loaches but nothing helped. The snails and egg "slime" where everywhere including in the filter.

I have three large clown loaches in anther tank but I didn't want to use their "help" because the tank was a 30 gal Hex which is way too small for them. To make a long story short, I broke down and put one of the clowns in the tank and in one week it was snail free.

Someone suggested using a bleach dip for my plants. Mix a ratio of 20 to 1 and dip for a few mins. After doing a bunch of web surfing/research, I decided to dip it for one min, The end results were most my new plants melted away in a few days!

Sorry it toke so long with the background... but here is my question:
If I put a bunch of new plants into the tank that has the three clown loaches, how long should I keep the plants in (for the loaches to clean off all the snails) so I can put them in another tanks? I'm really concerned because the tank I have in mind has all my Discus in and I don't want snails infesting my Discus tank. Also I can't put a clown loach in the Discus tank for fear of hording all the food during feeding time.

So I am looking for lots of cheap plants for my 90 gallon tank. So far my best deal is all the elodea I got from the lake by my house. Now, I would like some more exotic plants. They have big crypts for sale at Meijer for $2.50. Is this a good deal? I get a ten percent discount because my mom works there. So far my tank has 3 giant Elodea clumps, an Amazon Sword, a clump of purple Cabomba, a large branch of pothos (which does suprisingly well under water), a single branch of hornwort, and a small clump of water milfoil. As for livestock I have 4 koi angelfish, 2 Black Lace Angelfish, and 3 clown loaches. I still plan on adding a senegal bichir, an African Knifefish, and some needlefish.;D

I was wondering if there are any plants that I can use in place (or on top) of gravel/sand? I want to cover the entire bottom of the tank (45g) in green! No fish will be in it for a while (letting it be a plant tank for a month or two), so I don't want to make a plant only tank and later find out I can't put any fish in it.

So here is my full tank specs:

55 Gallon:
8x Serpae Tetra
1x Angel fish
6x Rosy Barb
4x spotted corydoras
1x Banjo Catfish

I am using eco complete substrate with 1 large piece of driftwood to the far right.

As for plants, I have:

Java moss (some.. not as much as you all have seen in my pics... )
A small stack of Amazon Swords
Small stack of Lloydiellas
Small stack of Contortion Vals
2 Bamboo sticks

All of them are near the back of the tank. I am running 4 airstones with are putting out a decent amount of bubbles (which I'll be setting to run at night)

I also have a new NutriGrow plant lamp (48 inches, 40 watt, 1.5 inch DIA (t12) Fluorescent.

So, my question is, how much Flourish should I feed the plants? I have Flourish Comprehensive and it says to feed 1 capful per 60 gallons once or twice a week.

I would do that, but I only have a few plants (and if you exclude the Bamboo which isn't aquatic, then even fewer). So I don't want to over-feed and cause a huge algae bloom.

Thanks a lot and thanks for reading all this!! It's a lot haha.

Important: Four points to treating algae.

Treating algae is something I am somewhat new to, as my nice looking 55 gallon tropical tank started turning green I had to take action, here is some...

Treating algae is something I am somewhat new to, as my nice looking 55 gallon tropical tank started turning green I had to take action, here is some advice I can give after beating it.

1. Treat the underlying cause.

In any case of algae there is a reason for it blooming, find that reason. Most people would assume that they should go to a pet store, grab something that says it gets rid of algae, and dump it in the tank. This type of attitude is wrong and leads to an unhealthy tank down the road as the copper in the herbicide is hard to remove from a tank.

Algae is a plant and aquatic plants need three things to grow: water, light, and food. if you deprive a plant of any of these three things, the plant will die. In this case, we want the plants to die.

In my case the first thing I checked was water parameters, low ammonia, low nitrates and nitrites, I definitely am not feeding the algae.
After ruling out food as being the underlying issue I moved on.

I could technically beat this algae by draining the tank completely, unfortunately for me I do not have the space for the fish in another tank so removing the water was out of the question.

I checked my lights, turns out, I have 2 florescent lights that I was leaving on 24/7... Wow, this is my problem. I immediately put my lights on only for about nine hours a day after I realized this. In addition, I also removed one fluorescent tube to bring down the watts per gallon.

2. Kick it naturally if at all possible.
Again, the copper in the herbicides that we use in fish tanks is going to cause problems in the future,we should strive to beat an algae bloom naturally if at all possible.
The first thing I did after bringing down the lighting was to start a daily regiment of 40% water changes. In addition I bought a pleco, more algae eaters, and brine shrimp. All of these little creatures eat the algae and thus, they keep it from being able to multiply as fast.

3. As a last resort, use chemicals as a solution.
Unfortunately for me, I was fighing a losing battle against my algae invasion and I had to start using a herbicide after giving the natural remedy several weeks to clear the water. Inexperience in me had let the condition get so bad before I reacted to the problem, that a chemical fix was the only solution.
For the next week I performed 40% water changes and dumped herbicide in the water. Finally a week later things are much clearer, but the cost was killing off my brine shrimp and badly messing up the pH.

4.Algae is still biological, as it dies, it rots.

After a few days the PH in my tank started spiking badly, along with ammonia and nitrates. The reason for the spike is the fact that the dying algae was starting to rot in huge proportions. Remember, Algae is a plant, plants rot, rotting leads to ammonia, and ammonia leads to dead fish. As you begin to beat algae, do not let up and think that your work is over, you now have a huge bio-load in your tank to take care of.

Well, that's all the advice I have on the subject, I really hope this helps. If you have any questions, please feel free to post them in this thread and I will try my best to answer them.

I just want to learn more about what I would need to start a planted tank.

I have a 35, 29 and 6 gallon tanks. I don't think that I want to plant in them, but I think that I am going to try and get a 15 or 20 gallon tank soon.

So what is needed for a twenty gallon tank to have plants in it. I have really hard water and a high PH, But I have this chemical called Neutral Regulator by Seachem. It is supposed to keep the Ph at 7.0. So with this lower ph, do you think that I could do some plants? What type of Co2 injector would I need? OR what Type of Light? Price quotes would be great too.

Thanks for any help!

I just got my plants through the mail today. I have added them to the tank. The leaves on the java fern are kinda brownish. The riccia however is another story. At first i thought it was kinda like grass soup LOL So i rinsed them really well, and added them to the tank. BIG mistake. Not sure how its supposed to be added, but i thought you just floated it on the top. Now its all over, like a huge mess! what do i do? It spread out and attached itself to my other plants and it looks kinda bad :(
:helpsmilie:

I have some fake plants in my aquarium at the moment, but after seeing some plants at my local pet store, I really want a real plant.

What's an easy first plant?
Do plants require maintenance? and if they do, what's a low maintenance plant (an easy plant)?
Do plants need a live sand substrate? or can they do with regular aquarium gravel?

Thanks :)

I had to take my plants out to treat ICH and I had them in a jar of water and they have started to turn brown and the leaves are curling. I have replanted them in my tank today but I am wondering if they will live or what will happen to them. One of the plants is under the "waterfall" from the filter and the other is at the front of the tank. The one that is at the front of the tank isn't moving but since it is close to the waterfall "rebound" off of the other plant do you think that it will be ok????
