After 7 years of storing my 75 g tank I have set it back up. Its still fishless but its had water, pea gravel substrate , rocks and plants for about three days now. I just bought a new test kit but have not tested the water yet so do not have any readings. The water is a little cloudy even though i rinsed everything for what seemed like hours. I plan on getting two Orandas, Two lack moors and maybe a fifth fancy goldfish after the tank cycles. I can't believe I let the tank sit empty so long! The fish will join: two llamas, two dogs, five cats and my very special flock of chickens.

I'm still kind of new to fish-keeping but I've read about 9 books and browsed almost 25 sites to research about proper fish care. I've got 2 20 gallon tanks up and running. They are only about 6 months old. One of them contain a few assorted tiger barbs (albino, green) and a juvenile red tail shark named Kuu-chan and the other has 3 male red coral platies I've known as the three musketeers and 3 mollies along with 4 cories. I've also got a 10 gallon with 2 baby blue gouramis which I'm planning to move into a larger tank as soon as they grow out. Last, I have a single blue-green male betta in a 5 gallon named Captain Barbossa. He's really antisocial. :'( All my tanks are planted after I bought just 3 tiny sprouts. Man, they grow fast!

As for me.. I'm only 15 and I'm managing well taking care of 3 and a half tanks. I'm hoping I can get more experience here by seeing how others take care of their aquariums. :p

Hi everyone!

I've been registered for a couple of weeks now and have been lurking around. So I'm just now getting around to doing this. I have a 10 gallon freshwater community tank with platys and black skirt tetras and an apple snail. I had a red veil tail male betta that was in the tank(his name was RedRum, hence the username), he developed velvet. I moved him to a smaller tank to treat him but he unfortunately died this past Sunday. =( My other fish are fine though.

As for me, I'm 19, in college, and I intern as a zoo keeper at Zoo Atlanta. Oh yeah, I'm a biology major(so far) but I'm going to transfer to a larger university that offers an animal science degree.

Hi, I'm Patrick and have a 55 gallon community tank. I like small schooling fish and have set my tank up with a good number of plants.

I've been keeping aquariums on and off since I was a kid in the 80's but have only been doing it the correct way for the past 4 or 5 months. I started with a 10 gallon, moved into a 30 gallon long, and I found my current tank on Craig's List.

This website has been a great source of information. I really appreciate the help I've received off of it, even though I have not posted, due to being able to find the answers I needed via the search feature.

Have a great day!

Hi everybody! I have a couple questions about cycling my current 10 gallon tank. I got one of those kit-things that they sell you at the fish store, one that comes with the filter and little trial packages and stuff.... sooo, i have had the tank up and running for 3 or 4 weeks now (quite frankly i don't really remember when i started it) and i'm trying to get this whole cycling thing finished up. ive been changing around... say 20% daily with a gravel vaccum, and have been keeping the ammonia at a steady .25. BUT, today 2 things happened.... first, my ammonia has gone up to 1.0, (i havnt changed water today) and nitrAtes started registering. just tiny traces, but still a little bit. no nitrtItes, just nitrates. but, the color pad of the nitrates looks like it could be some nitrites, just with the pad mixed up or something. is that possible? the ammonia test is the API drops one, but the other is a quick dip test.... are those reliable? im really confused, and kind of sick of this tank tanking forever to cycle with nothing changing.:-\

WHOOPS! i forgot to mention whats in my tank... one female platy and cory cat, an apple snail (yellow, his name is dozer :P) and 12 platy fry, one deformed that lays on the bottom.

Hi everyone! Im new to fishkeeping and fishlore... so hello! Alright... so my question has to do with my poor dying spotted cory carfish.:'( He/she is currently laying on his side in my tank, breathing heavily. He has blood at the base of his fins and his belly is very sunken. tankmates are one female platy one albino cory catfish and 12 platy fry. ok, now for the history... i just got him 3 days ago. i dont think the petstore feeds their corys anything special, and suspect that he was really hungry/starving. I have been supplying algae wafers, but just recently found out they dont really eat those... although mine was muching on them. I have a new 10 gallon (well, been up for about 4 weeks) that i am cycling. i didnt learn about fishless cycling until after i got my fish, so my ALBINO cory cat endured (and is still doing well) the first few weeks. so, 3 days ago, i went to the store and bought one female platy (she had 12 babies, one with a bent spine a few hours later0 and my sick spotted cory catfish. Ive had so many problems with the tank.... grr frustrating. lost my first batch of fish (total of 5 balloon mollies and some balloon fry) to ammonia strikes. I restarted the cycle to clean all the crud out of my gravel and try to get it right, but still had my albino cory left. SInce i have been performing daily 20-30 percent water changes. I also know cory cats need to be in schools but simply dont have room yet. Everyone else seems fine, except the platy is always hiding. Thanks for your help!

Hello from Illinois. I'll do a quick background. I got my first 10g tank when I was a kid. Myself and my parents had zero knowledge but we went slowly and did pretty well. Sadly, I have no pictures of that time so I gotta remember everything. Anyway, my family started to move a lot and I never had the time/space/ect to get back into it. So, I recently moved into a house so I have plenty of space and I got some free time.

Now to current time, I was thinking of getting a starter kit from a local store like Wal-Mart or Petco. The minimum I want is 20g with a max of 30g. So if you got a suggestion please let me know with the price.

Anyway, this site looks very active and I can't wait to explore what it all has to offer.

Hello everyone,

I just wanted to say how helpful this site has been to me already (set up my tank Sept. 11). It's nice to have so much information readily available when you are just a beginner. I started off with a 5 gallon tank and quickly learned you can't have too much going in such a little space. So, I talked my husband into getting a 28 gallon and I'm so glad we did. With the help of this site I have two cycled tanks: 3 African Dwarf frogs in the 5 gallon and in the 28 gallon we have 5 Mickey Mouse Platys, 6 Neon tetras, and a powder blue Dwarf Gourami. I want to eventually replace all my fake plants with real ones and currently have Hornwort in my 28 gallon. Thanks and I would appreciate any advice given.

I've been reading and learning for hours. What a great place! Not only am I new to the board but also a new aquarium owner with... what else... water issues. I've got a crown tail betta and two zebra danios in a 10 gal tank.

I'll find the right place to post my questions but wanted to introduce myself first.

Hi all! I'm Dani. Although personally new to keeping fish, my dad kept fish for years when I was a teen so I'm not super new to the whole idea....

Hi all! I'm Dani. Although personally new to keeping fish, my dad kept fish for years when I was a teen so I'm not super new to the whole idea.

Currently we have a goldfish bowl housing a Betta given to my daughter a couple of weeks ago by her math tutor. However, we also have 2 20 gallon tanks and a monster tank, that we have no idea of the size on, awaiting setup. We just brought up one of the 20 gallon tanks, washed it out and plan to go Friday to pick up the fish for it. The Betta will be moving into the larger tank as it will be heated and we can't seem to keep the bowl he is currently in warm enough for him. He doesn't zoom around much at the moment like he does when we clean his bowl and add slightly warmer water.

So, here's the list of fish I had planned for the new tank. Would love to know if I will be accidentally over-stocking it with the new fish and if we should wait to get the much much larger tank setup. (I can't give measurements on the big tank as it is currently buried behind the Christmas decorations and is holding a baby car seat at the moment, but basically we are devoting a 6 foot pass-through to it and it will fill the space with maybe 6 inches on either side.)

Planned Fish for the first 20 gallon tank and amounts:
Pike The Betta (of course only one)
3 Zebra Danios
2 Cory Cats
7 Neon Tetras
3 Glass Cats (my personal faves)
1 Red Tail Shark
Most everything I read recommends 1" of fish per gallon of water and I know the Danios and Tetras wont get too huge. And these are also the most common fish listed to community with Bettas.

Also have plans for 2 caves, a shipwreck and a bridge for hiding spots as well as 3 large-ish plants, 2 pieces of driftwood. Also will have for equipment: heater, filter, aerator, hood with light and non-reflective background.
Is all of this too much for the 20 gallon tank?

The second 20 gallon tank is planned for guppies and mollies since my partner seems to think he needs to have guppies (i'm so not a fan personally and think they make great food for carnivorous fish but he likes them so what can i do?)

Any advice on our current plans would be greatly appreciated.

Also, at my job we currently have 2 goldfish in a bowl. They started out with 3 small live plants and I added a cave and an aerator for a minnow bucket to the bowl (the bubbler is hidden under the rocks behind the cave so as not to cause too big a disturbance in the bowl and works really well that way.) I usually clean the tank once a week at which time I put them in a 32oz glass filled with water from their bowl and then thoroughly clean the bowl, rocks (river stones not gravel) and sides before putting them back in and adding more water.

Is there anything else we should do to keep them happy and healthy? I seem to recall our goldfish enjoying sucking up and then spitting out the smaller pieces of gravel but the rocks in these guys' bowl are too large for that.
On the whole, they seem to be growing well and are always very playful once the bowl is changed and back to their normal spot. They do seem to be getting bigger though and it looks like we may need to upgrade them to a tank soon. They are only fed 4 flakes of food at 6am and 6pm so am wondering if this will keep them from getting too big for their bowl.

I just joined am excited about all the things I can learn to be a more knowledgeable fish owner.
I have a small 2 gallon with a betta and a pleco. I just purchased a 75 gallon tank to put together especially for my pleco. I just love him, he's the coolest fish ever! I am planning on adding a pair of blood parrots and am kicking around the idea of a silver tip shark as well but not sure about that one yet. The 2 gallon I'm just going to leave up for the betta.

I am very excited about my new tank. I have been doing lots of research and accidentally ran across this site, I'm so glad I did I'm sure I can learn lots of things here.

I also am curious about everyone elses tank set ups to get more ideas.

Happy to have found this place!

Hi everybody! I've been lurkin' around here for a couple of days and thought it was time to go ahead and join, start posting & get to know everybody.

My hubby (34) passed away about 1 1/2 ago. The reason I'm tellin' you that is because my son (11) & I kinda have 2 homes. We have a WV home (have a 35 gallon hexagon tank there... that my mom is takin' care of) and right now we're stayin' with my bff & her family in TN.

I had no idea what I was doin' when I got my hex tank. Needless to say... I'm realizing all the stuff that I'm doin' wrong with that tank. Mom feeds them & that's pretty much it. I know that that's bad & that's why I'm here. Although, mom isn't up to doin' much else. I'll just have to do what I can to take care of it when I'm there. Luckily, my tank seems to be doin' pretty good. Please don't fuss at me. I really just didn't know what I was gettin' my self into. Hey... at least I'm honest LOL and now I'm here. If I decide this move to TN is permanent, I will see about moving the tank here.

Right now, we have 3 small tanks (2 gallon?) for the kids (no details right now) and a couple of beta "bowls". I know... I'm bad. Will work on fixing that too.

Yesterday, we got a 50 or 55 gallon (the lady I got it from wasn't sure) tank (awesome deal) and I want to do this right this time and have a thriving planted tank. I don't know what we're going to put in it yet and that's ok, cause right now it's just sitting in the living room (not even cleaned yet. LOL) I don't know what the filter is that came with it, the lighting or anything. I'm just not good with knowing what's "good & what's not", etc and kinda afraid of making the wrong decision (that's why I have 2 homes:;dk).

Anyway... there is sooooooo much info here, that my brain is starting to ooze out my ears. It's like MAJOR information overload. The only thing I think I might know is...

I want a thriving planted community tank
I want pretty & hopefully colorful fishies
I think for the plants I need to start with Eco-Complete
I think I want some kind of dark (black?) stuff in the bottom (don't know what would be good)
I don't know if I need a special filter for a more sandy like stuff in the bottom
Then there is the "information overload" of cycling the tank ???

If you made it this far, Thank you LOL and I'm looking forward to "meeting" you all.

Hi guys, My name is Mark, I'm 38 years old, and have just discovered the wonderful world of Fish keeping.

I currently have a 30 gallon 3ft tank, and also have a 2ft tank cycling as we speak. This is to house my male Betta that I currently have in my communal tank. He's acting the perfect gentleman just now, but I don't want to take any risks with him getting his tail nipped constantly, or him freaking out and killing the rest of my fish..lol

I have been told that my tank is currently overstocked, and my choice of fish was a little 'Risky'

This is what I currently have in my 30 gallon 3ft tank:

1 Platy - Yellow bodies with red tails
2 Angel Fish
2 Silver Sharks (bala shark)
1 Red Tail Shark
2 Siamese Fighting fish - 1 male and 1 female
1 catfish
1 algae eater
5 Tiger Barbs
1 Zebra Danio
1 Silver Dollar
2 dwarf gouramis
4 Cherry Barbs
3 Serpae Tetras

I currently have a 5 gallon betta tank and a 20 gallon tank in the process of cycling. I put pictures of both in an album for you...sorry my tanks are kind of bland. d:

Hello Everyone!

After stalking your site for close to 8 months I have decided to finally make a true commitment and join =P.

My name is Alex, and I'm 19. I have a 55 gallon freshwater community tank that has been set up for 7 months now. It has 14 Neon Tetras, a male Swordtail (getting him some lady loves in about a week), Bosemani Rainbowfish (want to get him some chums but they're hard to come by around here for some reason), 4 skunk corys, and 2 Discus (will be getting a third shortly here, must let my bank account recover). And when I find the right tank at the right price I'll have a 60+ gallon for 6 discus.

I also have an 8 month old 125 gallon Saltwater Tank that unfortunately had a bad bout of ICH and wiped out my fish =[. I'm currently trying to sell it with everything but some live rock, sand, and my corals and stick with a 29 nano that I have sitting in my hallway. 6 foot long tanks are just too big for apartments and people who rent.

In addition to my fishies I have a cat, a bearded dragon named Yoshi, and my beloved ball python Zeus.

And thats me in a nutshell.

I purchased a 55 gallon tank from someone on Craigslist and will be picking it up in a few days. Fish were included. The person who has it now has a tote for transporting the fish (a large angelfish, several silver dollar fish, some tetras and an algae eater). Any advice for moving the tank and the best way to get it set up quickly so I can put the fish back in would be appreciated. Also how to best care for the fish while they have to be in the tote. I never knew about the nitrogen cycle until I just read about it today on this forum. (It would explain why I have had such bad luck with the small tanks I bought for my kids at the beginning of the summer.) Should I email the person who has the tank now and ask him to hold onto the filter for me when he breaks the tank down?
