I've got a male beta, a pleco (supposed to be one of the smallest species,
not sure which one), and ALOT of snails, in my 10g tank.
I don't mind the snails cuz of the cleanup they provide, but i do have a bit
much. I've come across a site saying a dwarf puffer - Carinotetraodon
travancoricus, is a good choice for a small aquarium(1 per 5gallons), and eats
snails.
Can I get any verification on this? or some better ideas?
I've tried the lettuce/cucumber thing, but only getting about 4-6 each try.
And it doesn't seem to matter wheather I wait 1-2 hours, or overnight. The
number I get on the "bait" is roughly the same.
I'm not expecting the fish to rid the tank..just keep them down a bit.

Thanks for any help.

I'm still pretty new to this ><
My main problem is having the Cichlids and Cherry barbs, so I want a fish that won't get upset by them.

Finally, my sillyest question of all, do loaches (Yoyo loaches) eat algae? I'm confused cause a guy at my LFS said they do?
If not does anyone have any suggestions.

Wanted some advise on stocking my planted 27G Hex. Right now I have 5 Neon Tetras and 1 more in Quarantine with 4 Cardinal Tetras.
What I want...
School of Neon/Cardinals
School of Panda Cories
1... dun dun Duuuuuun.... Angelfish
The Neons and cories are non-negotiable. ;D
I have been reading that if you add the angelfish last and small you can sometimes have them with neon and cardinal tetras.
So my question is...
How many of each school can I have? Is one angelfish ok? I think I read someone say angelfish are unhappy single, but I am not sure if this is correct. I am sure I don't have room for 2 and would rather have bigger schools.

Know of any South American mid or top dwellers who aren't small enough to be eaten by Sorubim Lima?

I've already got a cichlid species planned for the tank, so was hoping for something different. (Although a cichlid that's generally peaceful but larger than 6'' from the same area would be nice to hear about.) A mid-top dwelling peaceful catfish would be awesome if one so exists, but bottom-dwellers are strictly no-no. I've already got plenty.

(Tank is 500 gallons. ;D)

i want to look into neon tetras and zebrafish. do these both work with guppies? how many of each could i have without overcrowding the tank? what are ideal water conditions for these fish?

right now, the temperature is around 80 and i need to test the water quality for other stuff but around how high should the pH be? i need it about 7.0 at LEAST because i have snails. what do you guys suggest?

20 Gallon Tank: Stocking Ideas

I just wanted to say that this site is great!

I used to keep a 40 gallon with my dad when I was younger, and I wish I had known half this stuff back then.

Anyway I am getting back into it and am starting up a 20 gallon high for now. I am waiting for some equipment to come in (Tuesday) before I can fully set it up, but I thought I would get some ideas while I wait.

I have a AquaClear 50 so the tank should be well filtered and it will also be heated. I bought a bottle of Tetra Safe Start today to start up my tank, but I plan on waiting a few days and testing the water before I add any fish. I also have a black gravel substrate. I almost went sand but was afraid of the clean-up. The tank is not planted just some fake plants and rocks.

So for stock I thought about something like this:
1 Dwarf Gourami (I was set on a Flame, but I saw both at Petland today and I almost like the regular one better, this will be added last probably)
5-6 Schooling fish
4-6 Bottom Feeders

For the schooling fish I was thinking either cardinal tetras, rummy nose tetras, cherry barbs, or harlequin rasbora. Any recommendations on these or any other good fish? I would like some decent schooling and some good activity would be a plus.

The bottom feeders is where I really need the most help. I was looking at corys or kuhli loaches, but I am open to anything else. Does anyone have an recommendations?

Thanks in advance!

Hi! I am setting up a second freshwater community tank, a 20 gallon tank that once held goldfish, for our four-year-old son and could use some...

Hi! I am setting up a second freshwater community tank, a 20 gallon tank that once held goldfish, for our four-year-old son and could use some opinons and pointers.

1. Which stocking plan would you personally prefer, and why?

My son chose the jelly bean tetras, but I think I could talk him into neon dwarf rasboras as a substitute. If you have other suggestions for small fish to liven up the tank, which will accept flake, please let me have 'em. :)

Option A:
5 Ladigesia roloffi (jelly bean tetras)
5 Boraras brigittae (chili / mosquito rasboras)
3 Danio aesculapii (panther danios) (these are small for danios, getting to around 1" full grown)
2 Corydoras pygmaeus (pygmy cories) (these get to around 1" full grown)

Option B:
2 sparkling gouramis (Trichopsis pumila)
5 (Micro)rasbora kubotai (neon dwarf rasboras) (a little smaller than the jelly bean tetras)
5 Boraras brigittae (chili / mosquito rasboras)
3 Danio aesculapii (panther danios)
2 Corydoras pygmaeus (pygmy cories)

2. I would like to place a single fish order to save on shipping, but don't want to add so much biomass at once. If the tank is completely cycled, mostly fishless (perhaps temporarily transplanting an algae eater and 1-2 others from our big tank, plus water and gravel, to help it cycle), what would you think of setting up a 10 gallon quarantine tank (with transplanted water from the big tank) and putting a good deal of the fish in there temporarily, then adding them to the 20 gallon a few at a time?

Any other suggestions on how to accomplish our goals with a single fish order? I don't want to skimp on shipping because I want to stress the fish as little as possible, which means I really only want to place one order if possible. (And yes, I've already checked and no stores in our area carry any of these fish.)

THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME. Any help will be much appreciated.:;thx

I think id like a tank with stacked granite and one or 2 live plants, and maybe some plastic ones. i was leaning towards stocking with many colorful fish, and a shoal of 5 albino cory cats at the bottom. any ideas are accepted! also.... if anyone can think of fish that have lots of personality.... that would be cool too!! thanks!

About to buy a 200 litre tank (100x40x55) and I currently have 3 Mollies, 2 Platys and an Angelfish (tiny atm, but is the reason for the bigger tank).

I wanted to get the following:
Another Platy cause i heard they liked to be in 3's or more
1 x German Blue Ram
1 x kribensis
6 x Zebra Danios
4 x Yoyo Loach
3 x Guppy

Used Aqadvisor to make sure I wasn't going to be overstocked, but would love some opinions on whether they would get on, suitability of the tank etc.

Wanting to get a female Krib and GBR to avoid the aggression levels if possible.

Any comments or advice would be appriciated, want to get this as right as I can!
I also have a new 55 gal tank that I'm currently cycling (fish-less ;-) ) I have two EBJD's that are about 1,5inch to 2inch. I have read that they don;t grow fast at all...so I need advise.. I also want a cichilds tank...something colorful would be nice, but I have the two EBJD's that are currently in my 37 gal community tank.

I was thinking about putting the two EBJD's in the 55 gal since they will get big (if they stay alive for that long :-) )..but then I would only have the two of them swimming in the big 55 gal tank. What's a man to do?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Hello Everyone!
I'm trying to set up a forty gallon aquarium and I would like it to be a gourami themed community, but I've run into a problem. I have a 4.5 in. male gold gourami that was already living in the tank. He was extremely peaceful with all his tankmates. I then tried placing in 2 female gold gourami into the tank and then he went berserk! He kept chasing them non stop and it was horrible. Since then, I've isolated him in a 20 gallon quarantine/hospital/jail tank. If I add more females, will he calm down, or will I have to choose between him and a gourami community?

I just got another tank....big shocker right??? ;D

I would like to reorganize ALL my tanks because I want to change the decor, etc. and I am not sure my black moors are happy.

My first question is about the goldfish...they are in my 30g hexagon tank which is tall but doesn't have a large footprint. The smaller of the two has lost weight since I got them (saved them from being flushed when I bought their home on craigslist!) and I am wondering if it is because he doesn't have enough room on the floor of the tank to forage for food? I was thinking that maybe they would do better in my 30g normal-shaped tank?

I am also concerned that their water temp dropped to 59 degrees and they got sluggish so I added a small heater (50 watts) and it brought the temp up to 72. What is the highest they should be at?

Anyway...the new tank is 35g and even though it was up and running with fish (I rescued them too, what is WRONG with people?!?) I am letting it run fish-free for a while to make sure it is cycled...I added seeded media, etc.

Lastly, I have a zillion platy fry in a 10g so that is the one that is being taken down....either they go into the 30g Hex or the regular 30g to grow out...???
I hope this isn't too confusing and I appreciate your help! All my fish are listed in my signature!:;thx

My plan:

2 male gups
3 female balloon mollies
6 albino corydoras
1 colisa chuna
1 otocinclus

Will the cories be okay in that space? Is the bottom too crowded do you think?

Any suggestions? :party0049:

*It'll be sand substrate with fake plants that I already have on hand. I'll seed it with a nylon full of cycled gravel and extra filter media.

Edit: I do about 40% water changes once per week in my tanks.

First off sorry about using litres, I get a bit confused with US and UK gallons.

Iv'e had a 60 litre tanks for about 4 or so months now and loving it to bits. It has 3 mollies, 2 platys and recently a little angelfish (hence the upgrade).

Been thinking about getting a couple of chilids (a blue and golden ram) but iv'e read on these forums they can be quite aggressive, and especially when there are two males? Would having two female make much difference? Would they be aggressive to my other fish? I also read they need well established tanks? ps. i dont want any breeding as i would'nt really be able to look after the young as well as adults :P

Was also thinking a blue and a gold Gourami, but same issue with the aggression.

Would love to get 6 zebra danios because i'd love to have some schooling fish in my tank.

Also love the look of Kribensis! But i read on your forums they aren't good for a community tank.

Any advice would be great!

Looking to make addition(s) to my 75 gallon fish tank. Right now I have 2 plecos, 2 leaf fish, 2 goby's, and an african butterfly fish.wondering what if anything I should get? It sounds crowded but its not at all and water has always been right on dot as i clean very often. The butterfly fish only stays on very top, gobys of course on the bottom, and the plecos and leaf fish roam around aimlessly and slowly. There is ample room for bottom dwellers and also room in the middle. I need to stay away from top of tank fish as i dont trust the butterfly. Any suggestions? I was wondering if crawdads would be ok? I used to have them and loved them. The only fish they could get to is the goby's and there much larger than crawdads so didnt know if they'd be suitable or not. I've had loaches, cory cats, glass cats, rainbow sharks, livebearers, and danios so I wanted to try somebody new out. Looking at probably 2-3" fish to make sure there safe from leaf fish and butterfly. Let me know what you guys think.

Hey guys
I am so incredibly ill right now it's not even funny. So, I have lots of time on my hands, and need to distract myself from being so sick for so many days. I was thinking about my 80g, which is currently fishless. I thought I'd try something new, and was looking for some ideas.
Here's what I've come up with so far:
Bichir/ropefish tank, but I don't know what fish could live with them and not get eaten.
Big school of cardinal tetras, plus one or more bottom dweller
Mollies, bottom dwellers, maybe some other fish
Any ideas? What do you think a good combination is for a 80g FW tank?

I'm not sure if this is a stocking question but, what would be a good fish to add to a 15 gallon aquarium that occupies the middle to bottom region of the tank? I have a molly and a platy and and 2 danios, and they chill more towards the top of the tank; I just want to 'balance out' the look of the tank. I wanted to try a rosy barb, but I've read that they need to be in a school and I can't handle that many more fish in the tank. Also, I wanted to get a Clown loach since I read how animated they were, but they are said to grow really big, and I can't handle that either.

Any Suggestions? :-\
thanks!

I am thinking about fish to add (in about 2 months) to my 37G. I have two tiny comets (holy guacamole those suckers grow fast) and two dojo loaches (maybe 3-4"). I've been thinking about a clown pleco. I don't mind not seeing a fish all the time, as long as I can locate him with some serious work to check on him. I also would be sure to snag lots of tasty driftwood. Some people say they are hermits, and will ignore everything else in the tank. This is just fine. But I have read about other experiences, where the plecos will bully other bottom feeders, and kick them out of the best hiding spaces. I don't want that at all; my loaches love to hang out in the "hard to get to" sorts of spots, and I would hate to have such soft lovable fish bullied by a grouchy spiny fish. Is this a personality thing, and it just depends on the individual fish? Or are these different types of plecos people are talking about? I'd love to hear people's experiences with clown plecos; they seem like a nice addition, but now I'm not sure.

I have had my 29g tank for almost two years now. During that time I have had many fish (not all at the same time). A pair of angels passed away about a month apart, a gourami passed away, two corydora catfish passed away, and three black skirt tetras passed away. During all this, for the full two years, my five scissortail rasboras and one corydora catfish have not only survived, but thrived.

Now, I really want to put something else in the tank (mainly because the scissortails congregate at the surface and thus are hadly ever visible). Does anyone have any suggestions on one, two, or even three fish I can put with the scissortails that will be slightly active and get along well with them?

Also, the tank is looking pretty crappy these days. I had silk plants in the tank and they were getting scraggily so I threw them out and now find myself with a big gap in the middle. So please excuse the mess. Those bags of marbles sitting on top of the tank will be added to it during the next water change.

Question: Male and female betta in same tank.

I have a male and female betta I was planning to breed. The male was in my 55 gallon tropical tank, the female was in my 10 gallon quarantine tank...

I have a male and female betta I was planning to breed. The male was in my 55 gallon tropical tank, the female was in my 10 gallon quarantine tank with some new fish. I have my quarantine tank next to my computer workststation so I can monitor my fish all day. Over the last few hours I witnessed a molly nipping at the fins of my female Betta. After a few more nips and my hand in the water as an act of intervention.

I decided that I would need to fill up the jar my Betta came and keep her away from trouble. On a hunch I took the jar and put the lid back on and dropped it into my 55 gallon tank to see how my Bettas would interact. After watching the male flare at the female a few times I watched the male lose interest even after pushing the jar around after him. Out of a mixture of boredom and scientific inquiry I popped the lid off the jar to see if my female would be attacked by the male.

As the jar fell to the bottom leaving the female exposed, I grabbed my net and stood watching my tank like a hawk, ready to swoop in to keep the fish from nipping each other. Well over an hour later I have been watching these fish nonstop, in fact, as I type this, they are both facing each other near the heater.

Over the past hour the male has flared his gills at the female, yet both fish have rubbed against each other. I got brave enough to feed the Bettas and watched them both come up to my finger covered with Betta flakes. At this point something shocked me and has left me baffled.

Both fish were eating right below my finger, the female a bit closer than the male, who was a bit below the female. I wiggled my finger around to shake the last of the fish flakes off and startled the female who swam down and behind the male who charged into my finger with gills flared and proceeded to bite me over and over as the female swam behind him. To summarize, the male defended the female.

I was quite shocked at what I had just witnessed, this makes no sense, everything I have read about Bettas says that this should not have happened. I quickly netted the fish that had been nipping the female Betta, and acclimated it to the 55 gallon tank water.(water parameters are the same due to sharing filters and water, temperature is the only difference.) Within a few minutes the Molly started to nip at the female Betta, but this time, the male Betta instaly started charging the Mollie, nipping back and chased the poor fish into a corner until I used my net to intervene.

At this point, the Bettas are swimming peacefully together around the tank.
What do you make of this, and should I keep them together? Are all the guides wrong, or are these fish an exception?

Hi everyone,

So my 55 gallon tank, which has been set up for almost 3 months, has a big problem with diatoms. I am thinking about adding a few ottos to help, as teh snails don't seem to be able to keep up.

I've never had ottos before but have done lots of research. Some places I read said that their impact on bioload is almost non-existent. I'm wondering if that is really the case? Because I am already a bit overstocked.

Also, I am wondering about mildly aggressive tankmates? I do have angelfish, bolivian rams and a dwarf guorami. Would ottos be a bad idea with these semi aggressive fish?

And should I wait another month or two until my tank isn't so new? (I used media from another tank to cycle it so it cycled fast and it's been very stable. ammonia and nitrite at 0 and Nitrates stay around 10.

Thanks for the input.

Hi, I have 2 tanks, a 20g high and a 55g. So I gave 2 questions.

In my 20g, heated to 79 degrees F, I have;
3 neons
2 Kuhli Loaches
1 otto
1 Bolivian Ram (I just lost my female last month)

So besides getting more neons and 2 more ottos can I get anything else bigger that the Ram won't torture?

In my planted 55g, unheated so the temp is now 70f and may drop down into the 60's this winter, I have;
6 Bloodfin Tetras
5 Gymnogeophagus Blue Neons (unaggressive 3-4 inch SA cichlids)
1 BN Pleco

I'm thinking 3-5 peppered corydoras or another pleco or flagfish or more tetras. There is more room in there and I'd like more movement to draw the Gymnos out.

Any ideas anyone?

Stocking List for Planted Tank.

My new 4x1.5x1.5ft is finally getting the plants put in & will be ready to start cycling in another week or so. The tank is fairly heavily planted...

My new 4x1.5x1.5ft is finally getting the plants put in & will be ready to start cycling in another week or so. The tank is fairly heavily planted with Anubius Nana, Crypto Wendetti, Red Tiger Lotus, Water Wisteria, Rubin Red Sword & plenty of Green Camomba. There is also Java Moss attatched to two large pieces of Malaysian Wood & Riccia floating on the surface. So I'm wondering what people think of this as a stocking list & how it would look as a visual display:
5 x Adolf's Cory - (Corydoras Adolfoi)

4 x Marbled Oto - Otocinclus Paulinus or 4 x Otocincluc Maculicauda, (don't know common name)

8 x Pretty Tetra - (Hemigrammus Pulcher)

8 x Rummynose Tetra - (Hemigrammus Rhodostomus)

14 x Harlequin Rasbora - (Rasbora Heteromorpha)

Does anyone foresee any problems keeping these fish together or with the numbers of them I intend to keep?

I am moving my two tiny comets (<2" right now) and two dojo loaches into a 37G. I keep them at 78F, which they seem to like. I'm looking to add some colorful friends (just a couple at a time), but I don't want anything that's going to cause trouble for anybody. I'm planning on a pleco (a clown if I can find one; anybody have any suggestions of where I might look? My local pet store ). Among some other small guys, I'd LIKE to add a few male fancy guppies, some zebra danios, or some cardinal tetras, and a female betta. I've read that male guppies are fine when kept without females, as long as they have enough space, but that they can harass other female fish that are too similar to them. Would the danios or the tetras fall under that "too similar heading"? Also, I know some "fancy" male fish will harass fish with fancy fins. Would the guppies bother a female betta?
Thanks!
