Hi everyone :-*
I am new to this site, I just discovered it yesterday and I've learned a lot already from reading threads. I didn't see anyone posting about this tho, so I figured I'd ask.
I have two tanks, one fairly new 10 gallon and an older 50 gallon. On my 50 gallon tank, around the rims, and on the back of the lighting unit, is all of this whitish yellow crusty stuff, that is very hard to clean/get rid of. I can see it starting to build up on my new 10 gallon tank, and I have no idea what it is! Is there a way to permanently get rid of it? Or is it something that I just have to deal with?
In my bigger tank, its been there for quite some time and doesn't seem to be doing any harm, other than the fact that it's ugly.
Thanks!

How well should I vacuum the gravel?

Hello,

Whenever I do water changes, I try my best to syphon out any detritus that fall off from plants and mosses and also from the animals. However, when I add the replacement water into the tank, detrirus that didn't get sucked up or was stuck in the mosses will suddenly appear and make the tank look really messy. I use fish net to manually filter out any visible and filterable particles out, but there are just too many smaller particles that I have no control over. I am wondering if it is okay to have these small particles in the tank as long as I do water changes. Or should I get some vacuuming device to get rid of these particles?

After few hours from a water change, the particles seem to settle, but as soon as I agitate the water or swish gravel around, I get back the cloudy water. The parameters 0-0-5. Also, my tank is almost full with mosses that I dont even see alot of gravel to vacuum. Please advise me~

How Do I: Clean my Fluval 105?

I have a Fluval 105 canister filter and I am a bit confused on how I am supposed to clean it and what I am supposed to replace. For those who know,...

I have a Fluval 105 canister filter and I am a bit confused on how I am supposed to clean it and what I am supposed to replace. For those who know, the 105 Fluval has 4 sponges (2x2) right where the water enters the filter, then the water goes through a drawer with a sack with (I assume cos it's black) carbon like pebbles, then through an empty drawer and then through the drawer with the media pellets (whitish). I was told by the LFS that I am never to replace the media pellets but I forgot to ask when/how to replace the other parts.

I think it's about time to replace some of the sponges. Last time I opened up the filter I rinsed them in the water that came out of the tank, but they are still dirty. I assume that's the reason my water is turning clowdy lately. I bought regular sponges and carbon sponges but I'm in doubt if I should replace all sponges at once, or 2 in the first month and then the other 2. Also, should I replace the sack with the carbon pellets? I can't tell if it's dirty obviously since it's black. Should I leave the empty drawer between my carbon sack and my media empty or is better if I add something there?

Sorry if there are too many questions. I did a forum search but I came empty. Any help is appreciated.

I've got a 45 gallon wide aquarium that is dirty as heck! it hasn't been set up yet as i haven't ordered the equipment (and probably wont for a little bit). I need the inside of the glass cleaned and I've read that you can't use glass cleaner on the tank because of ammonia. I have this Trader Joe's Multi-purpose clener that is organic that I'd like to clean it with, but I thought I'd ask first. the ingredients are as follows:
* Water
* Cedarwood and Clary Sage Essential Oils
* Grain Alcohol
* Natural Surfactants
* It also states: "Color and water contains less than 0.00005% DC of FD&C colors"

there's also this 4" crack on the side of it and i'd like to know how to repair that.

if someone can tell me if i can use the cleaner that would be great, and if i can't what i do use to clean the inside of a dry aquarium?

I clean my gravel/change water twice a week filling a 3 1/2 gallon bucket I'm currently using Aqueon conditioner it was on sale and my fish seem to like it.
I do 35% on Wed and 35% on Sat.
So i do a total of 70% water change each week is that too much? :;dk

I can't get it to work!

My tank has a bar across the middle which makes it awkward for my siphon that has a fairly tall plastic part.
And when I do get it filled up with water, I have to lift it up fairly high or else there will be a kink in it, causing no water to go out.

So I plug with the end with my finger, fill the plastic part with water. Let go of my finger, and then quickly try to fit my awkward plastic part into the tank, usually get air in it, and the siphon then never starts.

What do I do? Is it pretty much impossible and I am stuck either sucking or pumping it under the water??

Been a while since I been on here, I have recently Cleaned out completely a 55 Gallon Tank which has 2 Penguin 300 Filters on it. It had very bad salt build up on everything. I basically just used warm water and a plastic scouring pad (no chemicals). I'm wondering what steps should I take to putting, everything I have in the 29 Gallon into the 55 Gallon. I "can" use the gravel in the 29 Gallon if it makes it easier but I rather start with new gravel.

Fish in 29 Gallon are
3 goldfish (2 Black Moors and 1 Calico)
1 Pleco
3 Corydoras
1 Striped Raphael Catfish

Just trying to avoid stressing the fish out and any spikes that may occur due to the changes in filters and gravel..

Thanks in Advance All

hello all

i've decided to buy an algae scraper for my tanks to make things easier on me. I just recently bought a nice "aquarium tong" thingy that detaches and u can also use it to trim plants and its awesome!

forever i've told myself i'm not wasting money on something that i can use a credit card for...but i've decided i'm just going to do it lol. it'll keep my tanks looking nicer cuz i find myself not wanting to get my arm wet up to my shoulders everytime to scrape algae. A very similar situation as to what made me buy the tongs. Its just convenient

ANYWAYS, I'm thinking about the kent scraper shown in this link http://www.petmountain.com/product/a...aper-long.html

I was wondering if anyone from their own personal experience would suggest the metal scraper or the plastic scraper, or do they both work equally well? whats the advantages/disadvantages of not getting the metal scraper? I would think it'd scratch your glass?

also interested if anyone has one they dont use or willing to get rid of?

A lot of people on this forum recommend the seachem product prime. From my understanding prime detoxifies ammonia, nitrites and nitrates. When the ammonia is detoxified doesn't that temporarily stop it from breaking down and creating the good bacteria needed in a tank? I could be wrong but it was just something I was wondering about.

For people who are doing a fishless cycle wouldn't it be better if you just let nature naturally cycle the ammonia in the tank then adding prime every day since there are no fish that could be harmed?

I am looking for a filter for my 60 gallon aquarium I was originally looking at a EHIEM 2236 Ecco canister filter which is for up to 80 gallons, but it is only 185GPH, which seems kinda low, so what do you think for a 60 gallon aquarium? I was hoping to get somthing no more than a $200.00 preferably a little less.

What about EHIEM Classic, or Marineland C Series. Now I am looking at the marineland one but some reviews say it leaks and I definatly don't want it to leak! So what do u think, do u have any expireinces with any of the filters or other canister filters that I could get?

However, I need to do a siphoning in my healthy betta's tank, and am concerned that the one I've been using daily might transfer the ICH parasites to the clean tank... is this an issue?

I have a 72 gallon tank. I have a Hi-Fin Leopard Plecostomas and 4 mystery snails. They are not doing their jobs because I have algea on the glass and it's building. My plecostomas and snails seem to suck on everything in the tank and very rarely do I see them on the glass. How can I get the algea off the glass? Should I buy the eraser looking thing to keep my glass algea free?

Any suggestions?
