All my parameters are good accept nitrates is between 5 and 10 PPM. I added a ritteri anemone after aclimating it for an hr and it was doing great for a few days then over night it just went way downhill. It has also been in the LFS for a few weeks with no sign of weekness. I have metal halides and pretty strong flow. I will post pictures tonight when I get home but the thing went from healthy to shrivled up gruesome looking overnight. Any tips or anyone know if this is normal?

Hello fishlore! I really want to switch from fresh to saltwater in my 10 gallon aquarium! I currently have no fish in the aquarium and it is cycled already and up and running. I have an outside box filter, heater set at 78degrees farenheit, and a thermometer. I already have a sufficient amount of decor in the tank. I plan on keeping it Fish Only until i feel comfortable enough;maybe in a few months ill add live rock? I was wondering before I were to take on this task...
1. Will I have to recycle my tank switching from fresh to salt?
2. How much money a month would it cost for the salt and such to keep it going (NOT including adding rock fish etc.)
3. what fish and how many could i keep in a 10 gallon (was hoping for a "nemo " fish)
4. could the fresh to salt water transfer be instant with instant ocean?
5. Give me all advice neccisary for questions I may have missed!
Thanks alot!
Its a 6 month old tank. i have 1 clown, 1 shrimp, and hermit crabs. all the tests came out ok... my question is how will i know if he will be okay? he has a half circle at the top of his body near the top fin, also his color has went from yellow to brownish yellow like a big bruise. he has not eaten since i bought him 2 days ago. he seems to swim okay, just real shy. why is he not eating and i did not know about the quarenteen tank... (that is now in the works) :;thx

Ok so I have a couple 2.5 tanks that are sitting empty and I started thinking about trying to set up a Pico tank. It won't be for awhile yet since I want to do alot more research before I start putting $$ into it. However since a pico tank is so small I'm not sure I'm comfortable putting fish in it. And I'm having difficulty understanding most of the corals... So I have a couple questions.
1) Would a plate coral stay small enough for a pico? The tank dimensions are roughly 12"x6"x8".
2) Would I be better off instead to just go with a live rock arrangement and see what grows?
Thanks,
I'm new to all this, and am wondering what is the difference between marine and aquarium salt? if there is any....

i heard that marine salt was for brackish, and salt water tanks.... and the aquarium salt is for fresh water...... ??

But I thought what made freshwater 'fresh' was that their isn't any salt in it

thx

20 Gallon Tank: Questions about a FOWLR set up

I have a 20 gallon tall tank sitting around and I have been brainstorming what I should do with it. A FOWLR set up came to mind, but I don't know...

I have a 20 gallon tall tank sitting around and I have been brainstorming what I should do with it. A FOWLR set up came to mind, but I don't know anything about saltwater set ups, so I have a few questions for you guys. I am trying to do this on a budget hopefully in a couple months (maybe as my Christmas present), so I am trying to keep the costs down by using equipment that I already have.

1) I would a HOB filter and a powerhead do the job as far as filtration and water movement are concerned? Is a protein skimmer necessary?

2) If I have 40 watts of lighting over the tank, would I be able to possibly add any corals, anemones, urchins, etc?

3) I have heard that with SW, the stocking guidelines are 2-5 gallons per one inch of fish. Is this correct? How to inverts such as crabs, shrimp, and snails figure into the stocking levels?

Thanks :)

I bought a new ballast for my tank!

it's a dual ballast t5 HO setup...

now, i dont' get to spend much time at home except for the evenings and late evenings because of my work schedule (usually anywhere from 2pm to 3 am) and in order to reduce the possibility of over heating the tank (it's still fairly warm where i live) i've set the timers to put the light on in periods of about 4 hours so the tank gets about 8 or 9 hours of lighting during the whole day. I don't have any corals right now so they aren't an issue, but soon will be.

The light comes on between 7 am and 11am and then again between 6pm and 10pm. I set the lights for those time to optimize the heat and enjoyment while i'm at home.

Is that sufficient lighting or should the light be on the whole 8 hours straight? what about when i get corals? will they need the constant lighting or will it be fine with the times broken in two?

Rush is unexistent.

What type of Nano SW fish enjoys shallow water and could thrive in 540 square inches of surface? I would like to use a deep sand bed of 4" (that leaves 8 inches of depth in the water column).

I would drill the tank (at the rear side wall, the bottom glass is tempered) and use a DIY 15 or 20gal sump.
I have a fire goby that has white (rice-like) things under its skin. Anyone know what it is?
It first appeared on my fish about a week ago. It looked like a white bubble. It has since changed sides, and now looks like little pieces of rice moving under the skin. Anyone know what this is and how I can treat it?
It has also developed white lumps on its belly and the stomach is caved in a little bit. (Also just dropped off some white poop)

Hey guys, I recently purchased this "Immediate Water Cycling Kit" at my LFS and was wondering if anyone else had used it and what their experience with this product was. The kit includes Microbe-Lift/Special Blend and Microbe-Lift/ Nite-OutII

I was hoping to use this product on my QT in order to reduce the cycle time and begin using my tank as early as possible. IF this product does work, how long would you suggest I wait before adding any fish to the QT?

Thanks in advance for your advice!

I just added one gallon to my new tank to top it off after removing some rocks. I added 1/2 cup of instant ocean directly to my tank which i now believe to be a big mistake. The salt fell directly onto some nice new corals that I just purchased and I'm afraid that it has harmed and/or will kill them. Some of them have white stuff coming out of the center. I am worried that this is a similar in effect to pouring salt on a snail. Does anyone know if I just massacred my coral/tank life? Does my coral need to be removed? Will it harm other things in my tank? Thanks for any help.

Hai Guys, first post here.

I got 2 55 gallon tanks for the price of one and I think I would like to turn my unused tank into a saltwater.

After doing a ton of research I calculated that saltwater in this size might overstress the steel stand I got free with the tanks, so I reinforced the stand and set the tank back up.

I decided that I really like the sump as a way of hiding my cleaning and put a 30 gallon tank in the base of the stand and filled it up to see if it would stress the stand, now I need to empty the tank and partition it with Plexiglas.

As it stands I get about $60 a month of play money from odd jobs so I am financially forced to move slow. This week I got a 20 lb bag of live argonite sand and put a 1 inch deep bed in the tank.

At this point, I am pricing live rock and see this as a hurdle financially as it seems to be my most expensive purchase.

Where should I proceed from here? How can I get up and running within the next few months?

Now the kind of tank I would like to end up with is a reef tank, but I wonder if it would be possible to be up and running with very little live rock, and slowly build up to being ready to add coral someday, after I have learned quite a bit.

Can I get this thing wet and with something small before I add live rock, using just a hob filter?

I have an 8g nano. Water quality is great... normal on all fronts... I even took a water sample into a store, and they verified it. My question is my Zoa has closed up for 3 days now. I've had my tank set up now for two weeks and the coral for about a week. The Zoa was doing great for a week. It was the first thing in my tank.

I have a duncan, a hammer, a gorgonian, a xenia and a clown that have all been doing fine as I can tell. Upon recommedation of a couple of people, I also seeded the tank with copepods. When I put them in was the same day the Zoa closed up.
Should I be concerned about the Zoa??
