Alright folks, I'm new here and have a 55 FW with 1-13" common pleco, 1-10" split tail pleco, 2-sailfin plecos (1-8" 1-6"), and 2-4" longfin bushy nose plecos. The last water change I did, 6 bushy nose fry showed up. They are about a 1/2" long. I have a backdrop in the aquarium made out of fiberglass resin with all sorts of rock sticking out with great shelter and hiding places, but since I can't see behind the backdrop I'm not sure how many may be behind it. My question is should I pull out the little ones that I can find and then return them when finished or do you think they will flee the area and not get sucked up. I really want them to live. I know this is alot of plecos for a 55, but I,m getting ready to move and gonna get a 200+ for the next house!

I have 10 baby guppies, about 1 1/2 weeks old, in a breeding net growing in my 55 gallon tank. I was shocked to find the mom guppy in the net with them this morning. Evidently, she managed to leap over the top of the net and luckily didn't or couldn't eat any of them. I've since moved the mom back out and the net higher up. Do fish have any maternal instinct or was it just total coincidence that the mother was back in the breeder? I had the blue lunar light on last night. I wonder if this triggered the behavior?
Thanks,

Many of you know, I'm not a breeder. I've got cories and guppies in a 20g tank.
My cories have laid eggs several times. I've tried moving them to a breeder box, leaving them alone but I've never had any luck.
Back in Oct. I got the bright idea to add some live plants.
I threw them in the tank, didn't plant them, got busy and they started to die.
Still being lazy, I snatched them out and threw them in an empty 20g long tank. They died completely so I threw them away.

At the same time I bought the plants, I added 3 Sparkling Gouramis to my 30g. Two have decided to spawn and the male has been picking on my Lyre Tail Guppy and the other male Gourami. (There were 2 Guppies but one died over night)
He's keeping the Cardinals and GlowLights at bay on one side of tank. Kind of funny because he's so small.
Anyway, I look in the tank this morning and see what looks like a bubble nest attached to one of the plastic plants.

I thought I'd move the Lyre Tail Guppy and other Male Sparkle to the 20 long to reduce their stress. Now mind you, I haven't done anything with the 20 long. I can add some seeded sponges for an instant cycle.

lol, long story, still with me here?

The only thing in the 20 long is some plastic plants, some java moss and a couple of dead leaves from the long ago discarded plants.
Or so I thought.
I went to take a couple of left over dead leaves out and low and behold, something moves across the tank.
I thought ewww, A Bug!!
Grabbing my turkey baster, I go to suck it out and.....

It's a baby Cory!!!!
It's so darn cute! I guess he found enough food with the leaves and java moss.
Funny, I tried and tried, failed but nature had it's own ideas I guess.

Hmmmmm.....now what to do with my poor harassed Guppy and Sparkle. :;dk

I have Peppered Cory fry that are 3-4 weeks old. (I have they date they were laid somewhere - if I could just remember where) There are probably about 50-60 of them. The eggs were laid in a 10 gallon with play sand, free floating java moss, and a sponge filter. Monday, I moved them to a 55 gallon with plant substrate and the same sponge filter and java moss. The 55 is only filled about 6 inches which probably seems like an ocean to them because they're so teeny.

My question is what should I be feeding them at this point? I have been giving them Hikari First Bites but I'm wondering if something else would be better.

Also, I read that I needed to get the breeding tank down to 65 degrees to get them to breed. I pulled out the heater and that worked to lower the temp. I couldn't find any info on what the tank should be at for the eggs and then for the fry. Does anyone know? It's at about 75-76 now.

my angelfish have laid several times now. ive documented the process a few times and shared on here with photos and video. the pair do very well protecting and tending to the eggs right up to the end. they even protect them free swimming.

i have tried several times now to remove the fry and raise them. the first time i put them in a breeding net in the same tank as the parents. the parents picked at them through the net, none made it. after that i put them in my fry tank. first time with a divider...they got through and were eaten by juevenille platys. the next time i put them in the breeding net hanging in the tank...they died off one by one over the next 4 days until they were all dead. this last scenario happened twice. the first time i thought i had removed them from the parents prematurely, so i left them until they were free swimming the last time and still...they all died off.

my angels are laying again, as i type. what can i do differently to make it work this time??

Hey guys,

I have a female GT. She's laid eggs about 3 times in the last 6mo so I am 100% sure she is female...

I bought her a male or what I was told is a male... But I need to know for sure. Anyone have some specific tips on sexing GTs?? Ive done some research online and the pics are not clear or the descriptions of a male actually apply to my female etc... I cant seem to find any clear facts!

Im hoping to establish a love connection... the 'male' has been acclimated to my tank at home and I plan to introduce him to Mrs.T once I make sure he is in fact, a he. If he ends up being a SHE, itll be dead. My female green is probably the most aggressive fish I have seen and has already torn apart or bullied fish to near death... :( I dont want to risk harming this new GT....

I decided to rescue it and I put it in a small critter keeper with some of my main tank's water and a trimming of Hornwort. I wasn't planning on trying to rescue any fry when my platies gave birth but I just couldn't help myself. Will it be ok in the critter keeper or will it need it's own filter and/heater (the temp. in my house doesn't get below 74F.) Thanks and any advice would be greatly appreciated!

:;a

Hi, my partner and I started a tropical aquarium about a month ago.
It is 100litres, and in it we have 4 guppies, had 2 mollies (male and female) , 2 swordtails (male and female) and some bristlenoses.

We have an internal filter, have no nitrate or ammonia testing kit but our pH level is 7.2 and we do a water change once a week.
The temperature is at 80 F.
We currently have no plantlife but plan on getting some.

We purchased our mollies off a breeder, and noticed a week after we got them that the black female Molly appeared to be pregnant.

We also have another tank which is 240 litres.
We set that tank up and when it was properly prepared we took the fish apart from the guppies and the pregnant molly out and put them in the other tank.
We have a breeder trap but thought it would be better to not stress the pregnant molly and just move the others.

Everything appeared to be fine, the guppies were happy as was our mother to be.

About 5 days ago we noticed that our pregnant Molly (Celline) was looking quite tatty, No scales lifted or fraying, but we could see a few tiny silver patchs, which we put down to her being quite pregnant.

She remained happy, was eating well and seemed quite normal, her eyes looked a bit strange, I don't want to say cloudy, but thats kind of what they looked like.

Then we noticed she was going into corners and hovering flapping her fron fins and staying put for ages, and we thought she might be about to give birth.

Tonight one of our flat mates said, "There is something wrong with your black fish" , so we went to the tank to find her sucked against the filter, I prodded her with the net, and it was clear she was dead.

We are so sad that we lost her and her babies!
Why did she die?
Did we not have anywhere for her to hide so she became stressed and overdue?
Or did she lose the babies and her body couldn't handle it?
If our tank has bad levels of nitrate or ammonia, how are the guppies perfectly healthy?
Please help us, any answers would be much appreciated,
Thanks so much, sorry if this is a bit of a novel to read.

Hey all

Well, my mollie Gwen finally birthed :D. Sneaky little lady did it while I was having dinner. Came back to give them their last feed and there was a tiny little pair of eyes staring at me!

I caught about 14 fry and put them in my breeder.

BUT

:'(

About an hour after I moved them all, I had a HUGE ammonia spike. Seriously, this morning my ammonia was 0. I did a minor water change with the baby move (maybe 10%) and then an hour later, I see the tetra's gills are red and theyre breathing at the surface. Test the water? Ammonia at 4.0!!!! 4.0!!!!!!!!!!! Now it looks like half the fry are dead !!!! *sobs in a corner*

MY POOR BABIES!

Pray with me peoples. I don't want them to all die :( I've waited so long for Gwen to birth.

EDIT: Just did a second ammonia test after a 50% change, and it's now at 0. Am I getting false readings here?! *smacks API test kit* butbut my poor babies!!!

So I have a 40 gallon breeder tank with 4 silver mollies, 2 black mollies, an emerald green cory, 2 goldfish, 2 glass fish, an upside down catfish, 3 loaches that i never see haha, and probably 2 dozen feeder guppies that my fish can really eat yet.. they picked off all the smaller ones.

Anyway, I bought 2 creamesicle mollies, a male and female, I noticed the female was looking plump so i put her in my new 5gal, and put the male in with the rest of my fish.... I work at a pet store so every once and a while my boss will give me feeder guppies for free, so i put 2 dozen of them in my 5gal with my prego creamsicle.... n then i noticed "hey she looks skinny".. sure enough at a closer examination i spotted 5 lil guys.... so i scooped mama out n put her in my big tank..... that was 3 days ago... I only count 3 now.

My guppies wouldnt eat them would they??

Lola, the smaller female has been pregnant for awhile, and i can't tell if she is squared off or not, to the point where she's actually going to deliver.
I have had a pregnant fish before, which resulted in my baby platy, Goliath.
I just wanna know when she is going to drop so i can look for signs.
Thanks! :D:;fg

Hi all :)

I'm not sure if mumma mollie is pregnant or not.
She was quite obviously pregnant previously, and had a small very dark gravid patch about.... 2weeks ago?

Now she's huuuggeeee but I can't see any gravid patch. There is a darker shadow along the line of her stomach but I just don't know anymore!!

I was thinking maybe she'd gotten bloated, but she's really not interested in any veggies I try for her.

I know the pic is bad qual, she's definitely not a poser. I had to be cruel and slip my net into the tank to get her to hold still for that and she was NOT happy with me.

I'll try for a better one later :)

Thanks!

HI Guys. It's een a while. But I had to restart my tank recently because I moved to another city. My tank has been established since August and I finally have a red melon discus in my collection and he's doing well. I also had a pair of spawning rams until the female died unexpectedly one day. They spawned twice but didn't fan the eggs as much as I thought they should. The ammonia readings are normal and I don't have the other test kits. But we do a 50% water change every week and all the fish are healthy and happy. The female ram looked like it had a little hole on the side of the belly. What do you think happened to her?

last night i found new fry in my tank! my pair of Chromidotilapia guentheri (west african eartheaters) had 50+ fry. when i saw them i thought that the eartheaters had just stirred up a mess and i had a dirty tank, but i looked closer and saw that they were fry swimming around like crazy. i went to get my camera, but i got back just in time to see the pappa open his mouth and all the fry swam in, hopefully the fry dont do the same trick with my frontosa lol!

im kinda torn on if i should try keeping them or not. i dont have room in my tank, but im thinking maybe i should raise them to sell, think it would be worthwhile?
