I found out the hard way while treating a cichlid with mouth fungus in my Q tank. I kept my snails in there so there would always be some bioload on the tank. Anyways...
TSS Worked

Hello All,

I have heard a lot of people saying that TSS did not work for them. So I just wanted people to know it worked for me just fine. 5 days...

Hello All,

I have heard a lot of people saying that TSS did not work for them. So I just wanted people to know it worked for me just fine. 5 days ago I used TSS to cycle my tank. What I did was I emptied the entire bottle of TSS into my tank. It was a 3.38oz bottle good for up to a 30 gallon tank. (I have a 16 gallon tank) After adding the TSS I imediately added my fish (within 30 secs.) Today I tested my water and Amonia was at 0, nitrite was 0 and nitrate was under 5.

My guess for when this doesnt work for people, is that they Either A. Dont add fish immediately or B. They add too few fish (if any) and it doesnt keep the bacteria alive, or They add too many fish and it over whelms the bacteria.
I personally added five and that seems to have worked. I'll do a water change after 10 days has passed.

Hope this helps some one?

ammonia nitrite spike after bacterial infection

I had to treat my 75 gallon aquarium for a bacterial infection the other day. This was on a completely cycled and established tank. I thought maybe it would not hurt the beneficial bacteria too much since it was an established tank but I was wrong.

My ammonia slowly went up last night, only to 1.5 or 2 though. I did a 40-50% water change and added ammonia clear by jungle. I did another 35-40% water change this morning and added more ammonia clear but the ammonia stays. Now the nitrite are going up to. still only .1 but I'm scared it's going to keep going up. I added some stress zyme this morning too, just to try and help the bacteria. oh, and I added charcoal to my eheim 2217, and I have 2 whisper 60's with charcoal in them running now too.

Do you think this is going to keep getting worse or is there a chance it could turn around?

If it does, what do I do?

75 gallon
pH = 7.6.
ammonia = 1.5
nitrite = .10
nitrate = 20

Hi all. Well, I've had fish for 5 or 6 years. Just had a29 gallon and 10 gallon tank in the past. So I wanted to try discus as they are so cool and because of that, I bought a 55 gallon tank. But, now that it is set up I am kinda thinking that it could be a lot more like a job than hobby. I can deal with weekly water changes... but the more I read, it talks about keeping a barrel of waater and aerating it and heating it so it is the same as they are used to in the tank for the changes. One site that suggested this said I' have to clean that tank weekly to prevent bacteria.

The LFS guy said I'd need to at least buy RO wanter for half the amount of water needed for water changes. That is at least 7 gallons weekly. Or I could buy a ro filtration system but those are very costly (2-300). Guess I'm overwhelmed. I may just stick to all the pretty fish I have been raising.

I lost my peppered cory :'(
A few days after I got my Albino.
He never seemed "right" when I got him home from petsmart, I tested my water "regularly" with a master test kit reading 0 Ammonia and Nitrates.

I Made Use of my TopFin 10 filter and threw a big Aquaclear sponge in it. So
is that WAY to much filtration for a ten gallon? Total of 230 g.p.h with the Pengiun 150 bio-wheel. Too much?

I'm considering getting an upside down catfish would he be ok with 2 cory's 3 neon's and 3 zebras?
I know that option may be disliked but i really like upsidedwn catfish!

Green Water - Nitrate to blame?

I have a 10 gallon tank shrimp that I have been cycling. I woke up this morning to a Green Water Algae Bloom. It is not really bad now. Do they get progressively worse?

It has been finished cycling (fishless) for 3 days, and I have been adding a drop or two of ammonia every day since then. It usually takes 1 day for the ammonia to drop back to zero. Nitrite stays at zero. The nitrates are really high, around 80. I was waiting until right before I got my shrimp to do the large water change.

I read that high nitrates could cause algae blooms. Do you think that is the problem? Should I do the large water change now? And then do another right before I get the shrimp?

Thanks!

And to my surprise found 2 juvenile platy fry alive and healthy living inside. They must of got sucked down into there shortly after their birth. I'm guessing these guys would be about 2-3 months old judging by their size.

They were large enough to be released back into the tank in which they were born. Their only concern now is avoiding some angel fish but they can easily survive with amount of hiding spots and also being too quick for the angels.

It's incredible because the little guys would not have seen light since their birth and were in remarkable heath considering what the water looked like inside. Talk about lucky!!

The tank is defintiely not overpopulated, I only have him and about 25-30 juvenile mollies. But he's turning orange. Mostly around his face and around the edges of his fins. I called my local pet store and they are usually very helpful, but no one seems to know what is wrong with him, has anyone ever run into this problem before or can anyone tell me what is wrong with him? I have taken pictures of him to help in identifying the problem. Thanks =)
