I have one figure eight puffer fish in a slightly brackish tank along with 2 Otto's and 2 Siamese algae eaters. A few days ago my puffer stoped swimming around but then a few days later he started again, but now he has stopped eating. I've been feeding him freeze dried krill. When he stopped eating I tried to feed him some peas in case it was indigestion but he won't eat them. Then I tried feeding him frozen shrimp but that didn't work either. He appears to be fine other than that, his fins are a little torn, but thats it. Also he recently started swimming in a weird way, with his body almost vertical. Instead of him swimming Parallel to the ground like he used to he now swims at a 70 degree or so angle to the ground. My water parameters are fine. Should I start putting anti-bacterial medicine in the tank?

I've had him for about 4 months and about 6 or 7 weeks ago I had what I think were gill flukes in my tank. I put the medicine to kill parasites into the tank as directed and every thing went back to mormal. But now my pufferfish is sitting on the bottom of the tank, and he won't eat anything. Even when I put the food right in front of him he just stares at it. For about a week he hasn't been eatting as much as normal but I figured that he just wasn't hungry. Then today he stoped eating all together and sitting on the bottom. I've been feeding him freeze-dried krill. My water parameters are ok, nitrates are about 20, nitrites are 0, and pH is 7.6. My water temp is around 76 and the salinity is a little less then 1.004. I recently started adding salt to my tank becaue I realized my puffer needed to be kept in brackish water. I had the salinity at 1.002 for about a month and then rased it to 1.004 yesterday. Is he having a problem ajusting to the new salt level? My puffer is in a 30 gallon with 2 ottos and 2 siamese algae eaters, all of which are fine. I was wondering if it could be indigestion? If so, how do I fix that?

Advice on feeding a shy puffer

My DP is still very shy and it worries me that she isn't getting enough food. Essentially the only thing she will eat are live black worms and frozen bloodworms that are sinking (but not resting on the bottom). I put snails in the tank so she can hunt at her leisure and I never find any snails when I look into the tank later, so I assume they are getting munched on...Her belly looks roundish but never full, but I'm still new to DPs so I'm not sure what fully belly and empty belly really look like.

...I guess I'm just being worrisome since I hand feed my F8 so I know exactly how much he is getting.

Any tips?

Here's her sitting on her leafy perch, refusing any food that comes her way..grr.

My LFS has this special running where if you bought stuff in october (and boy, did I buy stuff!) you got a five dollar off coupon. Well I had two of them, so, ten bucks off, plus I get a free fish every month if I choose (or plant; it's part of a frequent buyer's thing), so I decided to look around to see what they had.

I've been fantasizing about a dwarf puffer tank for some time now, just haven't had the time to setup a new tank, etc. Well I figured I could at least research the cost now so that I knew what I was getting into. I was interested in dwarf puffs 'cause they're freshwater, not brackish, and since I've only just gotten truly comfy with freshwater, I didn't feel I was ready to start keeping brackish.

I asked the store employee if they carried dwarf puffers. She says yes they do, and her coworker confirms it. So she takes me to them, and the label says S.A. Freshwater Puffer (brackish). Grows to 4". I'm like... "uh, these are not dwarf puffers. Dwarf puffers are smaller, only about an inch, and they don't need brackish water."

She looks at me and says "well, we have smaller puffers." She then points to a tank of baby GSPs. I'm like "not it either." Apparently none of my local pet stores carry actual dwarf puffs. Oh well, perhaps sometime in the future.

K so went to pet store today hoping to find new buddy for my brackish tank. It's 90 gallon with 2 very young GSP's and tons of plants so was hoping to find new fish to sneak in there with them. I was looking at their selection of brackish, which was about two fish, both of which would eventually become GSP snacks. So the store lady asked what i needed told her just looking for brackish fish and didnt see anything suitable for my tank needs. She then said they keep salt in all of their tanks to a low end brackish level of around 1.005-1.010 and she said of any of the freshwater fish could go in a brackish tank. She went on to say the salt makes even the freshwater fish healthier and builds greater immunity to disease. Any one gonna vouge for her? This is first I've heard of this. I pray shes right but I just don't think so. And yes I know GSP's get huge and are aggressive but I still think with enough room, plants, and being introduced at earlier age they can co-exist with other fish if stay around same size.

Today I'm purchasing a green spotted puffer for my 31 gallon tank. and a 1 dwarf puffer for my 10 gallon. what other fish could i keep with my green spotted, and what with my dwarf puffer? (besides their own species) thanks alot for the advice! leaving for the fish store in 20 minutes. also I am using all-naturael rocks that i boiled for 30 minutes to make caves and such. I was wondering if i should buy gravel, or sand? also-what kind of food should i buy them, howmuch, and how long would that amount last?
Thanks!

http://www.ksl.com/index.php?nid=218...&lpid=&cat=371
Look at them. 2 little GSPs stuck in a 10g. It's probably freshwater too. Thing is, I don't know if I'd be able to take care of them properly. I have a fishless (but still running) 80g at about 1.020SG... but it's not at my apartment, it's back at my parent's house. Stachi has moved into the apartment with us in a 30g. It'd take me about a week to acclimate those little puffs to SW, and I can't really be there every day to do that. But the question is, would they be better off with someone who doesn't know how to take care of them and will keep them in that 10g FW, or with my family given instruction from me to take care of them? I'm not sure on that. I didn't even know if I'd keep the 80g as a SW tank anymore, but if I get those puffs then it would be... Yeah, I just don't know. Maybe you guys can help me collect my thoughts and get my brain flowing. :)

EDIT: unless my eyes are decieving me, there appears to be 3 puffers in the full tank shot. They must have lost one already :(

Question!!! I have a green spotted puffer that I've had for about a year now. He's only about an inch and a half and that's how big he was when I purchased him. I've read that these can reach up to six inches. Are they supposed to be this slow-growing or is there a dwarf version that might have been sold to be by mistake? I'm a little confused.. I think I have a tiger barb bigger than him. He's still my favorite though :-)
