Hi all, first post from a newbie.

I have a 3 week old tank with 9 mollies in there for the last 2 weeks.......(plus 4 fry and 2 baby snails who stowed away on some caboomba)
Fish are happy (I think) but I have cloudy water which is a bit annoying....

I have changed 25% water twice with minimal effect.
pH is ~7.5 and quite hard, Nitrites and Nitrates are fine and according to water authority the tap water does not have phosphates.

When starting up the tank I had a big algae bloom after a couple off days which receeded pretty quickly and was mostly filtered out or eaten by the mollies when they were added.

Could this still be algae? The cloudiness has a faint green tinge.

I am loath to reslove to using Algol or similar as I know this will just be a quick fix and not a long term solution.

All sugestions appreciated.

So i managed re-seal my tank that i had doubts about, and i filled it with water (there is nothing but water in the tank) after the silicon dried for 48 hours. Last night when i filled it up the water was crystal clear. This morning when i woke up i went to look at the tank and it was this really white semi-transparent fog, and now it's this green fog that's hardly transparent. The tank isn't exposed to any direct sunlight, but it is exposed to a 60 watt equivalent florescent light. I was wondering if that's a chemical from our well that i should get rid of when i do get the equipment for my tank, or is it just algae. I have no testing equipment so far, so i would just like a speculation based on what i described

Thanks

I'm sure this question is probably asked ten thousand times a day. But how long is the white cloudy water supposed to last? Mine has been hanging around for at least a week, despite the 25% and sometimes 50% daily water changes. Is that normal?

Please help me! I had a major infestation of snails in my 35-gal freshwater tank where I have one Parrot fish and numerous platys and mollies. To get rid of them (I mean there were THOUSANDS of them!), I took out all the fish, put them in a tank with the existing water, removed all of the gravel where the snails were breeding, and when the water became so muddy from it, I emptied the tank completely. Put in fresh water, treated it, mixed in some of the existing freshwater, all measured well so I put the fish back in. This morning, the ph had spiked to 7.6 (it had previously been 6 - 6.6 on a regular basis). Unfortunately, I didn't know the results it would have on my water: I put in two packets of Proper PH 7.0. It regulated the ph level but now my tank is so cloudy!! My parrot fish's color is pale-ing!! Should I take him out and put him in new water where the ph level will be higher, but the water is clear? Or is it best to simply leave him in this cloudy tank??? I replaced 25% of the water but it only made it worse. What can I do???????? Please respond ASAP. Current levels are: ammonia 0ppm; nitrite 0ppm. PH: 7.0. Thank you.

Help: Cloudy tank (white / green?)

So it's been a few days since I set up the new tank. Everything is wonderful with it, with one exception--the water is cloudy! With the tank light on (fluorescent) the water looks white-cloudy with no hint of green. With the light off and the room lights on (yellow/"energy saver" white) the water looks green. I checked the levels, I checked bacteria, I even checked algae, everything looks fine. I've done two water changes so far (tanks been running for 5 or 6 days now) and it's still cloudy (less cloudy though). I've heard that I can put activated carbon in the filter medium to clear it up, but was wondering if there might be another cause? I feed 2 times a day (morning when I wake up--8am, and at night when I get home--6pm), the filter is a EX45 (in a 25 gal tank), I have a 18" air wall strip, all the decor is artificial, the gravel was clean when I got it (the old tank didn't have any cloudiness). I'm going to be setting up another tank tonight so just wanted some tips in case I make the same mistake (whatever that may be) in the new one.
