HELP!

I have a red-brown film on the inside of my glass, the water is clear, but it's making seeing the fish difficult!

The tank's been set up since July, and I've only lost fish due to them being eaten by my Ghost Knives (Vader & Voldemort)

tank details: 33 UK gallons (36 US), pH7, cleaned at least fortnightly, not over-stocked according to Fishlore advice levels, i have a big powerful filter, a good heater, a new light with UV, a peice of bog wood root (recommended by my pet store) and a few live plants. I feed a mixture of flakes, floating stick and meal-worm.

The stain is covering the glass, my algae eaters don't seem to mind it, but aren't cleaning it off, nor will a good scrub with a coarse sponge...

I don't have a test kit, but will be buying one next payday. Any help / advice welcomed!!

Thanks,

Boris

Well I got a filter a couple weeks ago for my 5.5 gallon divided betta tank. Around the same time (maybe a couple weeks soon) I got some java moss. The java moss began to die a couple days ago so I threw it out since it was stinking up my bedroom. Well I noticed that when I removed the java moss the tank still smelled really bad so I did a 75% water change and changed the filter media (I had no choice but to throw it out) Now I'm recycling the tank all over again, but why is my water STILL smelling? Is it because of the java moss, or because I'm using a new filter pad? I've never had this problem before..

Ok, take two. After narrowly saving my Betta from what sounds like a horrible death, I am gonna try to take another stab at this fungal infection. I have an empty like small hex tank. Sadly is has no filter/heater. What I'm thinking is I could put the Betta in it, then do daily water changes, treat my main tank with Pimafix and Melafix untill this infection resolves, and after treatment put media back in and no harm to Betta.

Does this sound like it's gonna even work out?

Question for all of those who use peat or anything else to acidify their water?

My 75 gallon community tank is full of fish who prefer slightly acidic water, 6.0-7.0 pH to be exact, and 8-12 dGH.

My 75 gallon community tank is full of fish who prefer slightly acidic water, 6.0-7.0 pH to be exact, and 8-12 dGH.

My tap water is off the chart pH (above 8.6, probably considerably above) and 10 dGH.

For the last 4 months (exactly 4 months, actually) I have been using 2 pieces of African Mopani wood and a product called Proper pH 7.0 in this tank, and have had exactly 8 dGH the entire time, and a pH consistently between 6.6-6.8. The fish are thriving and breeding in these conditions, and that makes me happy.

However, the correct dosage of Proper pH 7.0 for this tank means I go through lots of bottles of that chemical, and it is getting really expensive. So I am thinking about other methods to acidify my extremely alkaline water to the levels that my fish prefer. And yes, I know they could probably adjust somewhat, but between spending a lot and making them adjust to conditions that aren't ideal for them, I'd rather continue spending a lot, no contest whatsoever. More over, my tap water pH is beyond reasonable levels for most fish. I know that none of the other chemicals meant to acidify water will work for me, most of them just bounce right back to extremely alkaline, and the last thing I want is to have a constantly and radically shifting pH. And my bogwood does not make enough of a difference by itself.

So I was thinking about getting some peat and using it, perhaps in the filter. But I'm not sure how to use it, how much to use it, and I am very concerned about the hardness going down to the point that my water has no buffering capacity, and my pH then going absolutely crazy. I was hoping that someone with experience using peat could help me with these issues.

I would also like to hear from people who have used other methods besides peat, bogwood, or chemicals. (If there are any other reliable ways).

Sorry the post was so long, thanks for reading it!

Oh, and here is the list of things in red that was suggested I include:
* Last water parameter check on 11/09/09 results: 0 ammonia, 0 nitrite, 10 nitrate, 6.6 pH, 8 dGH. Current temperature: 75 degrees F.
* Tank Mates: 10 Harlequin Rasboras, 5 Gold Tetras (eventually getting 5 more), 6 full grown or almost full grown Panda Cories and 3 Panda Cory fry. After everyone has grow a bit bigger I will get 5-7 Praecox Rainbows too.
* I vacuum the substrate once a week and do 1/3 of a water change once a week, I added in fresh carbon yesterday.
* I feed tetramin tropical flakes, Hikari sinking wafers, TetraAlgae vegetable enhanced crisps, freeze dried brine shrimp and small freeze dried medley (mysis shrimp, daphnia, bloodworms)
* 75 gallon tank, real Mopani wood, two Aqueon submersible 300 watt heaters, a 40 watt light, 2 Penguin Biowheel 350 power filters with tons of Bio-Stars, a lot of various different types of foam, and water polisher as filter media and a small amount of carbon.
* I performed a fishless cycle several months ago.

I've found out from you guys, in another post, that snail reproduction is a sign of overfeeding. But is it also a sign of good water? Snails wouldn't reproduce so easily if they were being poisoned with ammonia or something, right? I test my water every week and it's in good condition. But even with that I always worry a little. I'm still pretty new and I don't want anything to go wrong. And I can't help but over feed a little sometimes. They look like they're so hungry sometimes the way they act.

I know this part's a little off topic, but what's a healthy portion of food for my guys? I usually feed my male beta a pinch everyday (mixed with bettamin flakes - he actually eats these!, bloodworms, and brineshrimp - instead of alternating the food each day) and my pleco an algae disc every day. I feed them both at the same time(so my beta isn't curious about the disc and scare pleco away). Every Sunday I fast them.

:;thx

I have a...

I hope someone can help me figure this out. Apparently I've done just about everything wrong that is possible to do wrong with this tank.

I have a 10 gallon tank, heater, UGF (yes, I'd like to take it out but that's a whole different set of questions), a couple grass type plants, a banana plant (the "bananas" are turning black but it keeps growing new leaves) and a pineapple plant (which I just removed from the tank after finding out here and confirming on PlantGeek.net that it's not an aquatic plant), a crown tail betta and two zebra danios.

The tank is just over a month old. A couple months ago I impulsively purchased a 1.25 gal tank and then bought the betta (his name is Maynard). It wasn't long before I decided he needed more heat and better conditions overall than he was getting in that tank so I purchased the 10 gallon set up.

The pet store (local not a chain) included conditioning chemicals which were supposed to allow me to add fish within a few hours. So, after setting up the tank I added 4 zebra danios and an albino pleco. Within a week the pleco and two danios had died. I purchased strip tests... low ph but everything else was within "normal". But things still didn't seem right. So much for instant cycling.

Next I purchased a Tetra Test Laborett. The ammonia was very, very high... fortunately the ph remained low. I've been doing regular water changes (2 gallons daily). The ph and ammonia have adjusted to normal. A couple days ago I noticed the tank getting milky looking. After reading here I was slightly reassured that the tank was nearing the end of its cycle. The bad news is, there seems to be a slight scum and some foamy bubbles on the surface of the water. Surely this isn't normal???

Current water readings in the tank:
ph 6.0
NO2 <0.3 mg/l
NH3 & NH4 0 mg/l
GH 9
KH 3

I use tap water which tests at:
ph 7.5
NO2 <0.3 mg/l
NH3 & NH4 between .25 & 1.5
GH 6
KH 4

The temp is 76-78 F
Maynard is eating 2 betta pellets (he's so cute, he eats them off my finger) a day.
The danios get a bit of flake food (Maynard eats that too so I backed off of his 4 pellets a day).
They have a fast day once a week and daphnia once a week.

Hope I gave you all the information requested.
Thanks for any insight you all might provide.

Quick run down: Was given bad info about using Aquaclear cycle to cycle my tank with fish. Anyway I have now educated myself and haven't used it since the initial treament. I need help with my reading and where I am at in the cycle. The tank has been running since Oct 12th and now that I have educated myself I am sure it is overstocked.

I have a 55 G tank temp is set to 76-78 F my reading are as follows. These were taken using the API master test kit liquid version.

Ammonia = 1.0
Nitrite = 1.0
Nitrate = it was a colour between 0 - 5.0

I didn't know if I should test with the low ph or the high so I did both.

Low PH = 7.6
Hight PH = 7.4

Ok so what i know with my little knowledge is that I am still not cycled. I have been doing 25% water changes every week.

After I realized I couldn't trust the advise of my LFS I found this site and it has been great.

I am pretty sure my tank is a little overstocked right now, but as soon as I can get this tank to cycle I am going to be setting up a 2nd 55 G to fix this over popolated mess the LFS has got me into.

So after that long post my question is this. How are my readings? Where do you think I am at in the cycle? I want to do another 25 % water change tonight to bring down the ammonia level - do you think that is a good idea? All fish seem to be doing fine, but I want them to thrive, any advise on what more I can do from now on would be great.

Hey everyone,
Does anyone have any idea how long an in-substrate fertilizer will leach copper into the water? I accidentally added some tablets into my 10 gallon that had shrimp... after some fatalities, I figured out what the problem was and rescued the survivors to a QT, but I'd like to be able to put them back at some point. I've been doing a lot of water changes and added some carbon to the filter.
And, any recommendations for a good copper-free, in-substrate fertilizer?
Thanks,

I have a 50 gallon "corner" tank. I would like to put angels in it, but I know they need an established aquarium. I have 8 convicts that are a little over a month old. Are they big enough to "establish" the aquarium in six months? Their tank is cycled, so I was going to move their filter and add another one that will be staying on the tank so we'll have an instant cycle. I just want to make sure the tank will be "strong" enough for a pair of angels in a few months if I use the convicts since they're so small, even though they'll be growing quickly in the tank.
