1 bristle plant, 1 red lily, 2 bunches of pennywort, 3 amazon swords, and 3 moss balls and some algae due to liquid fertilizer that I now have stopped using. Going to receive some fertilizer tablets soon.

Tank consists of 1 betta, 1 inca snail and 5 otocinclus catfish. They all hide in the log during the day and come out and eat mostly at night. :;fr

First I'd like to thank everyone who has given me advice and tips in the Welcome section. I went with the 29g as I felt that I could handle the maintenance and as this forum says, get the biggest that you can. I would've been interested in something in the 30-40g range but I wasn't able to find any kits to price so oh well. I went with the kit as I'm not 100% ready to piece together my own hardware.

I didn't plan on actually buying anything until after Turkey weekend because I'll be gone for five days and didn't think the fish would appreciate me leaving for that long. But, they had a $10 rebate for the kit and I was afraid they'd sell out of the TSS and Aqua Safe. I didn't buy anything else as they had plenty or I wanted to price on the internet. Currently waiting for the woman to let me know if she has gotten over her fear that there will be a huge Black Friday sale so I can open it. :'(

The plan is to use TSS, obviously, with Zebra Danio's to jump start the cycle. I did plan on getting some live plants but the selection at the LFS was quite limited so I'll just stick with plastic. Going to buy the gravel at the hardware store as they want $30 for a 40lb bag at the LFS. I'll also be buying a strainer so I don't destroy my good one. :D

So, I'll update the thread whenever there is progress and yes, I love pictures just as much as the rest of you. :;hf

UPDATE 11/15/2009: I got the word that I can go ahead and unpack the box so here are a couple pictures. Sorry for the quality as my phone is being a pain today. I quickly hooked up the power so once I get everything set for real, I'll be sure to have a drip loop.

In regards to the contents, everything looks fine. Obviously I can't test the heater and filter now. The box said it had a digital temp gauge so I assume something that gave a reading in digital numbers like a digital clock. Well, it's just a strip which I don't call digital at all so that was a downer.

Funny, I never actually looked at the measurements of the tanks so I'm a bit surprised how big the tank really is. It turns out 29g is actually the largest my table can hold so that worked out well.

UPDATE 11/16/2009: I took the family to the LFS to look at fake plants and other items. A quick stop at Lowes got me a bag of pea gravel and another stop at Wal-Mart got me a cheap strainer. So, I washed everything and put together the tank. After I put it all together, I should've gotten a few more tall plants so I'll have to remember that for next time. I like the gravel and I like the way the tank works.

It would appear that the table has sunk into the carpet a bit and there is just the slightest tilt forward now. Me being the hardcore detailer, I noticed it but my woman didn't. Obviously there is no way for me to get a shiv underneath but since it's only a tilt of like 2-3/32nds I'm not worried about it.

Anyway, the woman is leaning towards the Cherry Barbs as she likes the way they look over the Zebra's. I was thinking of getting which ever she chooses on Wednesday. Anyway, it's taken me 45minutes to write this as I keep looking at the tank. :D Enjoy the pictures, I'll keep adding more.

The first picture is the "Before" picture and the second picture is the "After" picture.

I was supposed to be making a 5g planted tank for a new betta, but Dexter had a slight problem with the bridge and so I just redid the 10g tank instead. There was a hole in the top of the bridge that I thought went all the way through, but in actuality it opened into the inside of the bridge. Well Dex swam in to it and couldn't get out!! I yanked the bridge out and decided to try this instead.

Unfortunately, now the 29g tank is missing it's centerpiece... but I have two pieces of driftwood soaking. They should be able to be added to it over the next few days. I considered putting the bridge in the 29g, but then I thought if Dex can get stuck in the hole I am sure the othe fish can too.

And, the 5g is going to have to wait until I get another paycheck. I can't afford to buy any more plants :(

Luckily, I am happy with how the 10g tank turned out.

I'd like the name of the plants.
The lights at PetSmart is so expensive, so I got the one at Walmart, but I'm not sure if it is enough.

Green packaging. Plant & Aquarium F15
Light output is 510 lumens. 15 watts.
"cri" says 90k.

The description says "Contains a combination of phosphors which produce light rich in reds and blues.

I don't really feel comfortable using EcoComplete or Fluorite.

I have Seachem Flourish Comprehensive Supplement.

I need to get Co2, so here is a link. Good?
There is a local city forum that I tried getting more specific help, but no luck, so I'd really like to know the name of these plants, guide on correct lighting and more specifically on how to actually keep plants alive.

Hello Everybody!
I am relatively new to the aquarium scene. I got my first tank, a 55 gallon, from a random person in a grocery store who overheard myself and a friend discussing fish. The tank contains 10 Neon Tetras, 10 Glow Light Tetras, 2 Male Swordtails, and 2 Plecos. Here are some pictures, let me know what you think!
Take care,
1 inch of soil, an inch of gravel and water. handfull of gravel from my 55 and some pillow stuffing to the back of the filter.
It was amazingly not messy to do.
If I were not so impatient I would have waited for plants to arrive. But that's the prob with impatience.
I hope not to have too much of a mess when I plant the plants.
I plan on placing my betta in here but not till I test the water, wanna wait a few hours before I do it.

In a bit of a rambling mood this morning.... Anyways....

I found a 55Gal tank on Craigslist for $60, was super excited to get one so cheap and to be able to finally upgrade from my 29 and give my Pleco some running around room. It didn't come with a stand, but a quick search and a trip to Lowes and I had the stuff to make my own for about $20 and got the job done in a bit less than 3 hours. (I'll post photos a bit later) Compared to the wrought iron stands selling at PetSmart for $70 and the pressboard ones selling for $200, this thing is a bit simple, but you could park a truck on it and it won't even flex. Just 4 2x4s, an old oak dresser top that I saved for some unknown reason a few years back, some deck screws and a bit of stain and I'm ready to go fetch the new tank.

The tank came with an Emperor 400 power filter, lights, a 50w heater(?), 10 pounds of sludge and about 100 cockroaches... but it holds water.

Me and my neighbor with a pickup (there should be a special place in heaven for neighbors with pickup trucks) drove to the trailer where the tank was and to say these folks lived in squaller would be about 3 levels higher than what their home truly was. Decaying food and other nastyness abounds thruout.
I had told the previous owner to leave about an inch of water in the tank so I could shorten the cycle time when I got it home, her Oscar had recently died so I assumed the tank would still be 'fresh' and I comforted her on her loss in the emails before showing up.
When I got to the tank and lifted the lid, it was probably the 6th nastiest smell I've ever experienced. There were sea shells in there, rocks from her driveway, and probably the whole 3 year collection of Oscar's waste. Anyways we got loaded up as quickly as possible and got the heck out of there.
Once home, all the lids and non electrical stuff went into the bathtub and got a hot rinse down while I started to drain the remaining water and scoop out all the old substrate and sludge (the sludge was actually moving on it's own and I really don't want to know why). I finally got the tank cleaned, with one of the lights on the top to help see, and I happened to look thru the little vent holes on the top of the light and I see a roach staring back at me. Oh Joy. So I disassemble the lights knocking the roaches into the steaming hot shower in the tub, squishing those who try to escape and keeping my cat Deo around to eat any that I might miss. finally I put the still disassembled lights out on the porch hoping the cold night my convince any I missed to move on.
I start to take a break, wander by the tank and see another roach scurry across the filter... Joy. More disassembly, more hot water and squishing, thinking I got them all then finding a few more crevasses where the little buggers are hiding, and finally about 3am I declare victory assuming any remaining roaches will either starve to death or get eaten by Deo.

The tank is now 3/4 full, got an air bubbler running, and bit of gravel from my current tank. The $80 Emperor filter that came with it had the wrong elements in it that were only about half as high as they should have been, so I'll have to pick up some new filters, some fresh substrate, and I'm thinking about replacing the bio-wheels too depending on how much they'll cost.

I might take some pics after I get my second cup of coffee in me, but I felt compelled to share my adventure from last night, and to warn you all that just about everything from craigslist is going to have a hidden bonus inside, so when you get that great deal, be prepared to do some squishing.

well this is the result of my first attempt of aquascaping. I have only just finished getting the plants in so please excuse the cloudy water, And the rock weighting down the driftwood. any advice welcomed.

The substate is a combination of JBL ProFlora AquaBasis Plus and Jet Black Gravel and also has a DIY CO2 Injection, using the internal box filter as the diffuser.

the lighting was upgraded with another 15w T8 light unit(restricted due to hood) along with two new bulbs, one FloraGlow and one Tricolour.

Well as you all may have read, my six gallon tank (the Eclipse system six), was home to a three julies. Well that was a stupid idea. I thought that I could keep them in my tank, but I was mistaken. So I took the three guys back to my LFS and got back credit.

So while I was there I picked up:
3 Endlers (2 males, 1 female)
1 Dwarf Flame Honey Gourami
1 Whiskers shrimp

My tank is pretty much bare. I have one cave for the shrimp and not much else. I think that I might put some more community fish in my tank, that are small of course. I am not super worried about having alot of fish in this tank because I have a improvised filter set up, with an amonia reducer.

So all that my tank has in it are:

live sand, and a few rocks
The light is the stock light (Eclipse Natural Daylight F8/T5. 120 VAC, 60Hz
0.16 Amps) , and the heater and filter work fine.

Any comments would be great and I will have pictures posted shortly.

One question I have though, is about live plants.

Has anyone out there had an eclipse 6 gallon with live plants? Or dose anyone know how I could get live plants and what I need to buy? (Co2, new lights?)

Also I have a pretty high pH, like at least 7.6 but it is stable so most fish adapt well.

Any first timer plants would be great too!

Thanks for any posts!

Hello all. I am about 2 months into my first aquarium. It was a 20g for a while, but I expanded the 20g contents into a new tank. It is a cycled 38 gallon tank (measures 36"x12" and 20" tall). Black quartz substrate mixed with Seachem flourite.
3 Boesemani Rainbow
1 SAE
1 Clown Pleco
1 Bamboo Shrimp

Most of the fish are young, I may expand this tank to a 55g if it begins to get too crowded.

Fertilization
I bought seachem root tabs as well as Brightwell Aquatics FlorinMulti liquid fert. I have only dosed one weeks worth of the liquid so far. Should I use both?

Carbon
5lb tank - Regulator from GLA with built in solenoid and bubble counter. Ceramic diffuser and glass drop counter.

Right now, the tank has been suffering from too much light and not enough fertilizer and CO2. I have a fair amount of fuzz algae growing, and although I do see growth in my plants, its small amounts of growth. The algae is quickly growing on anything more than a few days old. Hopefully once I have my CO2 dialed in, things will begin to look better. Here is the tank as of right now, stay tuned!
Pictures time! I hope to have a dense background of swords going up and over the large driftwood root, with a semi-dense midground of mid height plants. In the front, I want the DHG to carpet a little more.

Hey folks been years (serious) since I've been online! But, I'm back in the fish game and couldn't be happier.
My Ten Gallon Tank started from the Top Fin Tropical Starter Kit from PetSmart.
I paid $65.00 dollars for it and wouldn't do it again... so here's a quick review.

Filter: The TopFin Filter rated at 80 G.P.H is more suitable for anything smaller then a Ten Gallon tank IMO, Its a decent filter but does not include any biological filtration. I upgraded to a Penguin 150 Bio-Wheel to fix this.

Hood & Light: The hood is great and it seems to be built by Perfecto but I'm not sure. The light is incandescent. The lighting is poor and produces a lot of heat. I replaced the bulbs with some 13 watt Sylvania Compact Florescents 8 bucks for two at walmart. (LOVE THEM)

Heater: Marineland Neptune, is the heater included It seems like great quality and I love it except that it doesn't have a temp gauge It's set at 76 degrees in the middle and you can adjust it lower or higher but then have to wait and check the thermometer to see were it is set.

Net, Supplies and Instructions included were great! I was really surprised that it had a decent guide on the nitrogen cycle.

After buying the tank I made the mistake of buying TopFin colored gravel, This gravel is awful the color washes off after you rinse it and is sharp and ugly what a waste of having to re-Gravel my aquarium and spend more money on gravel. I went with Deep River From Petco It's excellent.

I stocked it (after the nitrogen cycle) with:
3 Neon Tetras
3 Zebra Danios
1 Green Cory
1 Peppered Cory

I am planning on adding one maybe two more fish and I cannot decide what to get yet.

Here's the Tank.

Here's one of the Neons

I love Danios!

Peppered Cory

I would have liked to get 20 or 25 gallon long but wasn't able to find one in my price range! But it won't be long before I post about my second tank ;D
:animal0068:Edited for language (abbreviations) not acceptable. Ken

The high temp today was 83 degrees farenheit. Tomorrow is supposed to be 85 (and windy). Wednesday, however, is supposed to have a high of 61 - with a chance for rain (I hope so). So, tomorrow I bring in the cleaning crew from my pond. The tank is all set up and running, and I brought in the filter pads I had sitting out in the pond over the summer. Lots of nice bacteria to keep the cycle going. Of course, it is supposed to get back to the upper 80's by the weekend, but I'd rather bring them in now. I have three times the filtration recommended for my 40 gallon tank (a filter that is for 40 gallons tanks and a filter that is for 80 gallon tanks). They are both older filters, and I no longer have the paperwork on them, but they still work great. I think they are Topfin brand, but I don't remember. I also have an air pump blowing in four airstones for extra bubbles. I'll try to get some decent pics of the fishies when I bring them in. And yes, I know the tank will be majorly overstocked, but it is just for the winter to keep them from dieing when the temp gets too cold outside.
