well i am slowly coaxing others in my family to start with fish, and my sister wants me to get her my old 10 gallon started up for. The inhabitants are to be
3 neon tetras
and a cory or two/pleco and i was wondering if a sponge filter is okay with 10 gal and the fish stock above, as ive heard they are pretty much the best thing for biofilter.

I've been a huge fan of Marineland Bio Wheel Filters since I've gotten into fish keeping. But yesterday my 150b was acting slugish after some proper maintenance I filled it up and plugged it back in, and NOTHING after hours of frustration trying to get the thing to work. I threw it all back in the box and back to PetSmart.
I wanted to get another BioWheel but of course they were out of them. For the same price I decided to try the Aqueon Quiet Flow 30.
I do like the Aqueon brand they are not as "cheap" as I thought I've used there fake plants and water conditioner before.
The filter is huge for my 10 gallon I had to shave of all the plastic i could on my hood and it still had to be propped up for the filter to fit.

It has an auto start pump, even though it takes more space in the tank I love it no priming!
The filter has a sufficient enough of room for media, I placed a Aquaclear sponge in it as well as some extra blue bonded padding.
The motor is silent but the waterfall noise is pretty loud and i love that.
Anyone else use Aqueon filters? This filter seems to have the most power compared to other brands I've used in the past.

I picked up a box of aquarium stuff at a yardsale. There were a few power heads in it.
Can I cut a slit in a filter sponge and stick the tube in it to make a sponge filter?
One was in box and says it's for an UGF (also in the box). Would that matter?I don't want to use the UGF.
With it I get the Fluval U4 (doesn't state which one but I'm assuming it will be the 130-240ltr). Has anyone had these filters before and got a review to share?

Would getting 2 be overkill or would it do good in the tank?

I need some serious help. For starters, I've wasted at least three weeks at this point.

Here's the deal, I dump my whisper hang on or whatever you call it filter for a Fluval 205. Always wanted a quality canister filter. And this is what I did......

1) I set it up according to the manual.

2) Kept only their sponges on one side.........I did away with the media from the stack on top canisters and instead grabbed some filter polyster from cycled filters and threw some in the first two canisters.

3)Attached to 30 gallon tank.

Step #2 is where I think I might've messed up. I'll explain how.

It has been over three weeks and not a single drop in ammonia readings. Even worse, no indication of Nitrites. I use API liquid kits and tested other tanks to remove the possiblity of false readings.

Since it seemed impossible to me, as all the conditions were there to start the cycle, seeding, I upped the water temps to 85, added airstone, and this nice expensive filter, I finally decided to open the filter up and take a look inside. To my suprise, all the vertical sponges and even some that I chopped up and threw in the stack trays looked clean! It did not look like something that came out of a filter and had accumulated some bacteria. No guck, nothing!

For the Fluval gurus, suction is good on the intake, if I hold my hand over it, I can feel suction. The water blast from the output is strong. It's got a heck of a current going on in the tank. What have I done wrong? I seriously suspect putting the polyster media might have blocked circulation?

Lost as I am, I removed everything from the stack trays and left only the sponges on the other side of the filter.

I kindly thank anyone who can help me resolve this issue.

Best,
Ricardo

Update #1, I inserted some filter polyster into all three trays. I chose to do it this way because I don't want to get into fancy purchases of media, etc. As far as I'm concerened, the bacteria will grow on plastic and rock if that is all there is.

Update #2 A possible culprit detected.........and something I had not given thought to.........I popped in the DVD that came with it and it mentioned that the output nozzle needs to be underwater for airtight function.........well, I've had mine above water like a spout thinking it would aerate and bring more oxygen into the water. Let's see what happens. I'd still appreicate any and all advice or feedback from people who know well the operation of these filters.

It would seem there's a slot for the bio bag cartridge and then a slot for the bio foam and frame. If that's the case, are the slots of the same dimensions?

So my canister and I finally decided to have it out... It was used when I got it so yes it has it's quirks. It doesn't have all the clip things to hold the top on (but you only need two I've found out), but the biggest issue I've had with it are the valves on the hose. They don't work, you can close them (with a lot of effort) but then you can't get them to open again. Well I re-did the 32 today and decided to fight with the filter.
The fight ended with a pair of scissors and me getting ready to go to Canadian Tire. I'm gonna see if I can find a replacement valve... wish me luck.

Question: Which Filter Should I Get?

I will be setting up my first tank soon. I am going to get a tank to house a betta (and possibly a few betta-compatible fish later). It will either be a 5 or 10 gallon tank. I need a super quiet filter because it's going to be in my bedroom, and noise really drives me crazy when I'm studying or trying to sleep. It needs to be as inexpensive as possible. I'm 16 and don't have a job, so I don't have a lot of money on hand. And, of course, I want a filter that will do its job and keep my fish healthy and the water clear. It would be great if I could find a filter that meets the above specifications and goes inside the tank so I can put everything against the wall and bolt the stand to the wall to avoid knocking it over. Any suggestions? Thanks!!!

I'm on a tight budget & was wondering if someone can recommend a good filter system that is reasonable priced? I've looked on Petco & Petsmart (and there are so many to choose from)... I added some salvaged intake tubes to get closer to the bottom of this rather tall tank. We do water changes every couple of weeks and often have nitrate levels between 20-40. Any ideas for a good, compact filter that will clean up the water better? I know that I should probably change the water weekly, but reality suggests that will not always happen. Are canisters worth the extra expense?

So, I'm getting things in place to get my 75g started up. It's going to have sand substrate but I don't know if it's going to be planted yet. I've come to a crossroad as far as filters go. It appears they all do the same thing and everyone has their favorite brand (hence thread title). I've narrowed my Canister filters down to 3 brands: Eheim, Fluval and Marineland.
I noticed in another thread, someone mentioned using a Penguin in conjunction with a Fluval. Is it a good idea to have a HOB working with a canister? Talking to someone at a LFS, he said not to have sand with a HOB because the sand will kill the biowheel and other workings.

Really I guess the question is, is there a good website that has reviews on these filters? I've looked at a couple and have come up with the conclusion that I'm better off setting the 3 filters infront of me, closing my eyes and pointing at one. :;fru

I am using this tank for a hospital tank currently (it's easier to dose then my 6 gal) but my fish, a peppered cory and a CT betta boy seem to be struggling to keep from being pulled to it. I have found my betta right up against the intake several times. He is able to swim away on his own but I'm worried about his fins. My cory seems to really have to swim hard to escape the pull. help! recommendations? thoughts? :o

On my 75 gallon CA tank, I have 3 internal power filters that are rated for 80 gallons total. It didn't bother me while my fish were small, but now that they are getting larger, I need to double up on my filtration.

Filtering this tank is tricky. Its on my dresser, so there's no room beneath it for a canister. It also has to sit close to the wall, so a HOB filter can't fit behind it. I ordered a large sponge filter and an air pump rated for a 100 gallon aquarium. Will this do a decent job on the tank? I know its probably not optimal, but I didn't really know what other options I had.

Hi Everyone, I have 2 AquaClear 50's on my 29 gal and a AC30 on my 10 gallon. About every 3 months I like to rise the foam because it gets alittle clogged. My question is should I shake the foam in the tank water OR in treated tap water outside of the tank? I decied to shake the foam while in the tank when doing a water change to help keep some of my bacteria and it made the water murky at the moment. So next time should I shake the foam outside of tank or keep shaking it off in the tank? Thanks!

Cascade 300 advice

I recently purchased a Cascade 300 for my 37G tank.

I recently purchased a Cascade 300 for my 37G tank.
I had a top fin 40 working in there right now, but decided that I wanted something with a bit more GPH, so I got this one.
I remember everyone on this site recommending an Aquaclear, but when I went to the LFS the guy there recommended this Cascade. He said he has been in the hobby for over 40 years, and all his tank seemed to look pretty good, with fish not over crowded, bettas were in individual tanks that looked to be ~3-5G, all the fish seemed overal happy, and so I trusted him, and got the filter. Not to mention I got $10 off, because the cashier was like "Halloween special!" So I thought it was a pretty good deal.

I looked on this site for reviews and couldn't find much, it seems most people just don't have it, or don't have much to say about it. I looked other places online and there were mixed reviews. Some loved it, some preferred others.

But I bought mine and set it up now, so I guess I'm keeping it.

I'm planning on getting a goldfish tank (still cycling right now), and because they are pretty messy, I'm worried about having to replace the filter media too often. I looked online and found this DIY thing for this filter:
http://www.cichlid-forum.com/article..._tricks_ii.php

What do you guys think? Does this option look like a good idea to keep my tank well filtered? I would probably keep my carbon filters to run every once in a while to clean some of the stuff out, but this filter foam idea looks pretty cool.

One problem is that if I do decide to do this set up. I have NO CLUE where to find the stuff to make it. Do you guys have any ideas?

Thanks for reading!

I remember when I was growing up I would see a lot of undergravel filters and powerheads at all the fish stores and a couple of my dad's tanks have them. Now I barely see any. Are they still recommended to be used on large aquariums or did they turn out to not be any good?

So I'm trying to help my sister out with her fish as much as I can. She currently has a feeder goldfish and a betta in a 2.5 gallon tank :;smack

I'm giving her a bigger tank for the goldie but I'm going to need to get her a filter as well. The thing is she's living in a dorm at her college so the filter is going to have to be REALLY quiet. The dorm is small and she also shares it with another person so is there any filter that doesn't really make noise?

Thanks for any help,
Rachel

EDIT: my sis just sent me some pictures of her tank. She drew the background herself lol. This is dragon(betta) and little(goldie)

I happened to be walking by and I saw her little black tail sticking out of the filter (hose? pipe?)! I screamed, turned off the filter and she was immediately released. She has small white wounds around her eyes. (She's a black moor goldfish.) Other then that she appears to be alright, but now I'm scared to death of the filter. I almost want to turn it off. What should I do?

The adventure just never ends when you own an aquarium ...:-[

It's five minutes later and now she's acting listless again. God, I hope she doesn't die.

My 10 gal was a kit, so the filter takes those sealed, all-in-one type cartridges. So, when I change the cartridge, will I have a cycle in my tank all over again? Is there another way to "seed" the filter if you can't get at the stuff from the old filter? Hopefully I'm making sense. Thanks!

Hello. I've recently joined this Forum and think the advice is fantastic. My question relates to our Juwel Vision 260 litre tank. We originally set it up back in 2003 and then in 2005/2006 (can't quite remember which year) we had a total disaster and lost every single fish overnight ~ came down one morning to every single one floating at the top. We never actually managed to find out what happened.... might have been the cheap fish food Tony bought (never again!)... might have been the most stupidist of things we could have ever thought of doing and that was to leave some firelighters on the top and a few crumbs may have fallen in the water (I have a sneaky feeling this may have been it). Anyway, to cut a long story short, we had to start over again completely afresh.

Happily we have gradually built up our current stock over the 3 or 4 years and so far so good. (Firelighters stay IN THE coal bucket and cheap fish food is banned LOL).

I don't know if anyone else has a Juwel ~ there is a static black unit in the back right hand corner which houses the filters (four large open density, two medium density and one small white one on top), the pump which has a hose into the tank pushing the water up to the top and the heater.

I was wondering if it would be beneficial to add another pump at the back left corner as this is definately the area with the least water movement. We have got a 6" air thingey under the gravel which is supposed to be a "wall" of bubbles, but we now get only about an inch or so of bubbles coming up. I am guessing it probably needs replacing?

Many thanks for any advice and apologies for such a long post !
