Good morning :;co
I bought the new Star Trek movie yesterday. Watched it. Loved it. I'll watch it again :) I wish they would make a new series out of it. I checked the Star Trek website a while back when the movie came out and there was no mention of a new series though.

Did anyone else enjoy it? (I know I'm a little late but I wait for movies to come out on DVD) :)
I also discovered that my power filter was on its last leg and not filtering nearly what it should so i went and got plenty of api ammo lock i of course you api stress coat to get rid of cholrine and such ... the new filter is a mariland 350 for a 70 gallon tank mine is only 29.... so i am just wondering when can i expect the ammonia to begin to lower ... when i do my water test my nitrites are slowly starting to rise maybe .25 PPM to .50 ppm but seems like they have always been there ...even before the prob ... my bloom is definately getting less i can through the tank now but my ammonia is still through the roof ... any ideas ??

My apartment complex sent out notices yesterday to everyone telling us that we are no longer allowed to keep anything other than plants, bikes, and patio furniture on our patios. They are inspecting everyone tomorrow. A lot of our neighbors have rediculous things on their patios like weight machines, treadmilles, beach towels hanging over the railings, etc and its totally tacky. I understand why they are doing the inspection, but I don't really know how my tub ponds are going to go over. Technically they do have plants, and I guess they could be considered furniture, but I don't know, and I really hope they don't make me get rid of them. My patio is very clean and always looks nice, so I am hoping that they let it slide. Keep your fingers crossed for me!

Yesterday I saw a poll on how many Bettas owned. I answered 10+ since I had, at that moment 13. Guess what? Today it's 14.

Went to the LFS and brought home this beautiful White Dragon betta juvenile male (at least that's how they labeled him). The most expensive Betta I've paid for (28USD) I couldn't resist, he is so beautiful!

I temporarily placed him one of my (cycled) small quarantine tanks (2gal), placed a Java Fern and a rhyzome of Anbuias Barteri with only one leaf (almost totally destroyed by the naughty Tiger Oscar female).

I am considering purchasing a rimless, topless, glass cube tank I saw at another LFS. Extremely low light plants, natural river sand mixed with enriched substrate and a small filter (I keep lots of seeded sponge and bio-ceramics).

Likely going to place it in my desk at my home-office (tank room to be precise).

Pepetj
Santo Domingo

PS pics later, I don't want to stress him more than he is already with the handling and transportation home.

I was up in Wellington over the weekend, and returned to find a leak in one of my 40gals, and my Convicts paired, with the male, Demon, beating up every other fish in the tank whilst the female eggs him on. So I've been thinking about downsizing my stock for a while now, and using my tanks to concentrate on just a few species, and decided this was the sign to start! First task was to fix the 40gal (crack in the bottom), I've patched it up, and it's now sat outside on the deck waiting for the sealant to cure. So the next thing was to temporaraly re-home the stock from that tank,(no easy task!), and then decide which fish to keep and which to sell.\

I've decided to keep my Guppies obviously, and use 4 of my tanks, 40g, 40g, 20g, and nanocube for breeding them. And I'm keeping my Caete Cichlid trio, who will share one of the 40gals with my breeding male Guppies, and my Loaches. I've given Demon and Elektra,(my Cons), a 20gal long to themselves, and obviously the 90gal stays as it is.

So I've sold my Angelfish and Blue Acaras to a friend of mine who has a 75gal, they should be very happy there, and my Kribs are going to live at the same house as my other Oscar went to about a year ago, another friend of mine. I'm a bit sad to see these guys go, but it means that I can use their tanks for my Guppies as they grow, who otherwise would just have been eaten! On the plus side I know they're going to very good homes and will be well looked after. Hopefully next week will be less work...........

I had a car accident today. It was totally my fault, and I can't believe I was so stupid. I've been driving for over 20 years and I know better. I'm not a bad driver, but today I was. I had my son in the car with me, he asked for something in my bag, I took my eyes off the road, drifted across and hit another car at 80 km/hr. It was so close to a head on. I've only just got over the shock and stopped blubbering on my boyfriend. I could have killed my boy. I could have killed the poor woman I hit. Thankfully she doesn't have a scratch. Zach as a graze on his leg from the airbag, my arm is bruised from my airbag and the glass from my drivers side window exploding. My car is screwed. I'm raving a bit, think a bit of shock still. I'm just so grateful. We are all ok. Please don't get complacent behind the wheel like I did people. Please don't take anything for granted. I've just had a huge wake-up call. Life is so precious....

Hey guys! It's been a while. I've had a lot going on with family issues and haven't been posting at any of my usual haunts. I recently lost my grandmother, but was able to make one last visit to her before she passed away. I also spent some time in Texas with my parents, and just got back to Georgia a couple weeks ago. I've been settling back in here and working on the tanks, etc.

The tanks have changed a bit as well. We lost some corals in the 50 reef, unfortunately, while I was out of town but we're getting it back slowly but surely. We now have a betta tank too! It's a heavily planted 5.5 gallon with a blue halfmoon, Cowboy, the remaining 2 pygmy hatchets, and some ghost shrimp. We lost both the gudgeons in the 8 gallon, so that's become a dwarf puffer and bumblebee goby tank. The 120 is still going great, and the only change to that one is adding more plants. Plans for the frag tank are on hold for the moment... the stand doesn't fit through the doorways! We'll have to figure something out for that one. We're working on a 55 gallon Tanganyika cichlid tank, and eventually a 46 bowfront softy reef. Oh, and we got an AeroGarden. Those are sweet. :)

That's about it as far as what's up with me. Hope things are well with you all.

(...though it does indirectly involve a mermaid)

Last week, when I was at my parents' house, I was watching syfy and caught an episode of Sanctuary. I thought the show was awesome, so when I got home, I checked to see if it was on Netflix.
Not only was it on Netflix, but the first season was available to watch instantly. Cool. So for the past week or so, I've been watching the first season as I had a chance to. I finished last night (well, early this morning... early enough that I shouldn't be awake right now) and went about finding Season 2, as Season 1 ends with a huge cliffhanger.
I am, however, four days too late in completing Season 1, as SyFy is only allowing to be shown online the last four episodes, which means that currently, the episodes start with PART 2 of End of Nights; the first episode of the season.
Grrr...

I am so ready to make some changes to my 55g. Sorry I don't have a pic with me right now. It's planted and has several peices of dw. One BR, one DG and several platies and buenes aires tetras ( man have they gotten big ).
My plan is to put a soil bottom with gravel on top. This means I ahve to empty the tank. Here are my thoughts, please let me know what i'm missing or need to enhance:

1. sift through soil before starting project (make sure I have enough soil on hand)
2. fish in a 5 gall bucket (is this big enough?) w/ tank water/can the fish be this amount of time w/o filter? i really dont know how long the process will take.
3. keep filter and media in tank water with plants and dw
4. driftwood and plants in another bucket (or with the gravel) tank water
5. remove excess water (keeping enough for #5)
6. keep gravel wet in bucket (tank water)
_______________________________
1. add soil
2. add gravel
3. replace plants and dw
4. replace water (leaving room for the water that is with the fish and the plants and media?)
5. replace fishies

How does this sound and the order in which I have posted?
Thanks all.

Okay, not sure if this is the right place, but, I live in Australia, and we have just started summer. Already the temperature has hit 95 degrees. My fish tanks have gotten up to 90. Last years summer got up to 130 degrees, hotter in some places, and my fish tanks were boiling, and a lot of my fish died.

Too cool them down, I turn off their heaters and I have to put ice in their tank. The ice only lasts about an hour before melting completely, but the water does stay about 78 for another 2, maybe 3 hours. A lot of the day I won't be home, so I can't keep an eye on it.

If it helps, I put about a gallon to a gallon and a half of ice in my 55g and about 1/4 of a gallon in the fry tank and about a gallon in my axolotl tank. Also, the ice is kept in bottles, so no chlorine from the tap gets into the tank.

Is there anything I can do to keep my tanks colder for longer periods of time?

And, what is the absolute maximum temperature the tank should get? (And the minimum, I don't want to freeze them either).

Thanks

Hi all. It has been a while since I was on. We had a baby boy in August and life has been crazy. Thankfully all is well with our fish :D

We are thinking of moving to a new house, so I need some advice on how to move our 40 gal fresh water tank. It currently has 14 Tetras in it & 2 Cory Cats.

How can I move this tank safely and not stress out these guys? Should I transport them in something other then the tank? It is a half-hex glass corner tank and it weighs a lot- so we would need to remove some of the water to even get it onto a moving truck, is that okay to do?

Any help is welcomed!
Thanks

....I'm an idiot! After the loss of one of my guppy boys last week, I went to my lfs to replace him. There were no male guppies, so I decided to get 2 girls instead. Then I fell in love with some tiny neons (they must be young i think) and bought 6 of them too. And guess what? I'm overstocked again. What a moron! I really do know better, I don't know why I keep doing this stuff. Needless to say, my guppy boy thinks all his christmases have come at once with his 2 new girlfriends. Everybody else is very happy and settled, and I'm being very particular about my water changes. Water parameters are staying constant and are good. I LOVE my neons. Should I try to get rid of my guppies? And before anyone suggests that I get another tank (Shawnie), it's truly just not within my budget at the moment.....Aghhhhhh! what do I do? :;smack

hehe - forgot to mention my tank is 11-12g

I did an oil change and found a bad tie rod, so I took it in. then they came up with a laundry list of things to fix...

1. serpentine belt
2. oil pan gasket
3. all 4 struts
4. tie rod

they wanted $1,100 for it all, which isn't a BAD price, it's just a lot more than I can spend right now. The tie rod is the only critical component that can leave my car disabled in the middle of the road, so it's being replaced right now lol.

I can do the oil pan gasket myself, but I don't think it's actually leaking, I changed my oil a week ago and it was fine.

I was planning to replace the serpentine belt along with the tensioner pulley when i get off school in December...

But that leaves the struts. Has anyone replaced struts? I know you need a couple special tools, but is it a big job? Is there a particular brand I should look for, and are there other components I should replace at the same time (like the strut mounts?)

I haven't been on for a while, and when I logged on this morning I noticed a thread from Angela regarding some pretty personal marriage issues (among others). It isn't the first time I've noticed people reaching out on here, and i just wanted to say how impressed I am that one; people feel comfortable and safe enough to discuss personal stuff, and two; everybody's responses are so caring and full of such good advice and observations.
This forum has impressed me constantly with great advice on our fishkeeping hobby, but also with obvious and genuine caring for each other. It is definately a family of sorts, and a very loving, supportive one at that. I haven't reached out for support or advice on personal issues as yet, but i find myself in the unusual position of feeling comfortable enough to do so if I felt the need. I say unusual because I am a very private person, and find it very hard to reach out for help.
I know I've raved on a bit, but I'm just so touched by all of you guys. Such an amazing forum. Such a beautiful group of people. I just wanted to tell you all how much I respect you and how each and every one of you has touched my heart in some way. I feel truly lucky to be a part of this group. :;group

A few important things have happened the past month.

1. My cat got put down

2. Discovered some hitch-hikers on my valiseria. They where eating it and I lost track of them. I think I siphoned them all up because I haven't seen any snails the past 8-9 days.

3. It seems as the tank further established most aggressive has panned out.

4. One of my glowlights has what looks like a nasty infection

5. Whew, the java moss is growing like wildfire. The first few weeks it was very "lazy".

6. Not having good luck with the java ferns.

7. Valiseria is doing good.

8. Combating an algae infestation.

9. The pH has taken a jump to around 7.0-7.2, as it was previously very low around 6.4. It's probably a combination of the tannins running out in the driftwood and my taps pH neutralizing out.

10. Filter is getting on my nerves, it seems some days its GPH fluctuates. Trying to get my dad to lend me the money for a new filter.

I stopped by two family owned pet stores today because I thought they would take better care of their fish than the big chains and was sorely disappointed.

The first pet store I stopped in was filthy, smelled terrible, and when I went to the fish section I found a gourami dead on the floor. I realize fish jump, but are you honestly telling me they pay so little attention that they not only leave the top of the tank open but also do not check on the fish to see they have made an escape?

Then the second store I went to was clean, but the tanks were poorly stocked. The very first tank in the store had about 15 female bettas and 10 red crabs. The poor bettas were being ripped to shreds (by each other and the crabs). I wanted to take them all home, but I have nowhere to put them and was unsure if I could save them even if I did bring them home. I always thought the death cups were bad, but seeing that was 10x worse.

And of course the staff gets annoyed when someone walks in who actually knows what they are talking about and questions them...

I just needed to share this with everyone. I am feeling misserable thinking about all of it :(

The only groomer I trust left the facility she was working at. I'm trying to find a new one to groom Hagan and give Jake baths. I found a new groomer. I couldn't find the paper that had the appointment time on it, so I e-mailed her. The appointment was for Saturday. She e-mails me back and says it needs to be an expedient dropoff and pickup because she has something to do afterwards.

She's never groomed Hagan before, so the fact she's concerned about time concerns me. He's a 109 pound dog that's getting the schnauzer cut. I've also had groomers cut him because they couldn't make him stand still. He'll stand still for me and my daughter and anyone who's authority he respects. If she's worried about getting him done in a certain amount of time, that can end badly, ESPECIALLY the first time grooming him. I'm in no rush. I just want him done correctly and safely (for both him and the groomer).

I told her we'd re-schedule. I'll be thinking long and hard about this. I'm not sure she's the one.

Everyday after class i organize my binder, which takes a couple of minutes. Well, today was the same. I sit next to a window. I was putting my stuff away, when i was done i got up and stretched. The window broke inward cutting me on the wrist, and pearsing my jacket and causing a gash on my right arm. At first i didnt care, i started thinking.... i could have gotten killed if i had been sitting. So i went to the nurses office and got all bandaged up. It was really shocking though, i didnt even have time to cover up my face or anything. it just happened so fast!

the kids who broke the window started apologizing and all that... i was like its ok, it was an accident. After all they were shoving eachother and one just happened to smash right in the glass.

anyway, i felt like sharing... pretty freaky huh? LOL

We are approaching the second tough time of the year for food shelves; the holiday season (the first being summer, due to kids getting out of school and not having access to low-priced school lunches).

There are many ways you can help your local food shelves out. Donations of food, time, and money are all helpful (if you plan on emptying your pantry, donating food is fine, but if you've got to go out and buy food, consider giving the money directly to the food shelf, instead, as they usually can squeeze much more out of a dollar than you can). Many municipal areas have one or more Thanksgiving Day walks that support local food shelves.
By virtue of the fact that we are keeping fish and have internet connections/computers, we know that each of us has at least a small amount of disposable income. I challenge each of you to give at least $20 worth of goods or money or a few hours of time in order to give others a chance to have food this holiday season.

This is the real reason I haven't been online that much lately:
Things were going so great and are going great with me and the kids.

However I am having a HARD time dealing with the marriage right now. Yea, we had fell in love again, and all but there were some details about our separation that I was not told about until after Kendra was born and its just eat at me until a lot of my favorite things to do have fell behind.
He apparently dated someone for a couple weeks while we were separated. This person isn't just someone I will neve see, etc she is a social worker where my grandfather is in the nursing home. So its really caused a lot of issues there, like the fact I haven't took Kendra to even meet my grandfather because I am afraid of what I would do if I came face to face with her.

She had been trying to break my marriage up for months apparently, and when we had a weak point she preyed on us. Well, it takes two.... Not to mention I really don't understand this one, she is abou 40lbs heavier than me, def looks like she got beat by an ugly tree, and is 6 years older than me.... ?? She is also a married woman, that her first marriage was split up because of this same thing, her husband cheated while she was pregnant.

I am so upset by the fact I was pregnant during all of this, and the fact before we decided to "date" again he didn't tell me. I would have NOT gotten back into this had I known about it all......
I am having a really hard time dealing with it all, and trying to not act irrationally and make a life changing decision right now. There is so much going on, I had surgery two weeks ago, the kids, kendra... just SO much.

I really feel like I am going to loose it!

Well, after the tooth crumble incident during my pregnancy. I waited until today to get something done. It begain a year ago with a filling coming out of my tooth, then the tooth decayed from there.

Well I thought I could get by with minor dental work... I was WAY wrong. I got to the point that it brought tears when I would eat so something had to give. The dentist told me a root canal and crown, then after discussing the cost (even with 80/20 insurance) I went with the hey pull the thing option. Well once he got in there we found out the tooth was not salvageable no matter what. The root canal would have been a wasted venture.
I am going to get a bridge put in this winter sometime... luckily its a molar ini the back where you can't see Im a TN redneck with a missing tooth...

He said if I had come in when I first lost the fillling none of this would have ever happened...

I also ended up having to make another appt for a filling, but hey out of 6 years of not seeing a dentist that being the only work.. I think I am lucky!
