Hello,

I have a computer desk that I don't really use and was wondering of replacing it for a bookshelf that can hold a 20/30 gallon long/tall. Instead of spending big bucks for one I was wondering if anyone has a blueprint/instructions on how to make one? I'm not really a handy man but I will do my best. This would be a great self present for my birthday :)

Opinions on Sump Design?

Hey everybody. I'm new to this forum, but have already learned a lot by reading through a bunch of useful stuff here.

I am seeking opinions of a sump I have just started building.

Here is the design:

It is based one of many designs I have looked at. It is not exactly to scale but it is close I think. I am using a 45 gallon tall tank for the sump. I would rather of used a long tank instead, but the 45 gallon was just sitting in my basement gathering dust. I plan on purchasing a 75 gallon or larger aquarium for my display tank, but am in no hurry. I'm keeping an eye on craigslist and local yardsales for a good deal.

Anyway, my main concern is the height of the first baffle. as you can see, it is 18 inches tall. I am using 1/4 inch lexan acrylic as the baffles, because I can't get the local glass shop to cut the glass for me for a reasonable price. The only baffle in place so far is the first 18" piece. I used A LOT of aquarium silicoln, but I am afraid of the water pressure pushing it out of place since silicoln doesn't really adhere to acrylic.

My main questions are:

1. I have heard that WeldOn 1001 will adhere glass to acrylic. Can anyone confirm this?

2. Do the height of the baffles concern anyone? (especially the first one)

3. Any comments or concerns about the overall design?

Oh yeah, there will be a protein skimmer. Probably a hang-on style remora that will empty into the chamber with the live rock.

Thanks in advance for any advice. I'm new to saltwater and want to do this right. That's why I am in no hurry.

Thank you

I made this with materials from Walmart for under $12.

First, I bought a 3pack of compact florescent bulbs, a bag of zip ties, a small extension cord with plug-ins on each side, and 2 socket adapters. I had a lid for a storage container laying around, so I used that as the actual hood. It works really well, however, I currently have an algae problem with my tank, but I suspect that the problem stems from my tank being close to my window, as opposed to the lights from my hood.

I also cut out a hole in the middle of the back so that the cord could fit through it instead of getting pinched by the top of the tank and the lid.

Filter Flow Diffusers

First of all I swear that all the crust looking white areas are NOT on the tank or filters!!!! OMG....going to throw the camera away!!...but here is...

First of all I swear that all the crust looking white areas are NOT on the tank or filters!!!! OMG....going to throw the camera away!!...but here is some easy help. I am using 12 inch clear plastic mailing tubes and cut for desired fit and looks.

1.) They are 2 inches in diameter.

2.) I leave both ends open with some course filter media inserted.

3.) Mailing tubes come with caps so you could have the current directional.

4.) For the HOT Magnum type filter only a hole is cut to fit the L shaped return. The diffuser is just slipped on the tube. (they are very light weight.)

5.) For the Aquaclear type filter A.) a slot must be cut. 3 sides...2 narrow and a long cut the width of the filter return. B.) the 4th side of the slot must be folded to slide up under the filter return. C.) a nick can be cut into each end of the tube and a large rubbr band will attach it to the filter. (my photo shows the prototype...using duct tape!!...been running 8 months now so why fix it)

6.) I did this so the water flow does not swish my plants around. The 2" diameter give a much broader gentle output and DOES NOT AFFECT the input flow of your filters....they can continue to run at max.

Again so sorry for the scrungy, scaley, unkept neglected look in the pics...the flash was too bright i guess.

Oh yea, and please use the filter media of some sort....fish the like currents might invade the tubes!!!

So this is a interesting link I found one day while cruising the internet and I thought I'd share it here in case others are looking for something different in the way of tank stands. However one word of caution is that for every 10 us gallons that's 100lbs of water, so for larger tanks you may want to think really really hard about the ability to hold up the weight... anyway without further delay... "Let's See Some Custom and Unique Stands"

about a three months ago i found a piece of dw that i sold to one of the members of this forum, but before i sent it i did some work to it, i cut some pieces off and cleaned it. i work in a machine shop that gives me access to alot of cool tools, the one that i used to clean this piece of dw was a sand blaster, it turned out to be the fastest way that i have ever cleaned a piece of wood, i accidently deleted the pics but to give u an idea of how good it worked, the dw was 36x18x12 with a 6 inch hole in it, and it only took about ten mins to completly remove all the dirt, bark, rotton wood, dried moss, mud, even inside the hole, which i thought i would never completly get clean. it brought out all the water marks and beauty back into the wood, leaving me with a great finish and not alot of work, plus the sand is just sand, so if some happens to stick to the wood it wont really hurt anything, i will try to get another piece of dw i will post pics, anyway, i sure most cities will have a machine shop and they probly wont charge to much to sand blast some wood. so mabey some of u can try it yourself, let me know if anyone else has tried this.

I fount this two T8 Normal Output lamp assembly with fairly good looking reflectors and figured to upgrade to a six lamp unit (This could work for FW or SW).

I have a questions for the light experts, just curious DIYvers, and electrical people.

Any noticeable cons in placing three T8NO lamps side by side in the space designed for one lamp only? Besides the loss of reflection form the edges, I figure I still get fair enough of the longitudinal reflection surface to increase light intensity levels in the tank.

Of course I will use two electronic ballasts capable of handling three lamps each.

Any thoughts?

This unit could be retrofitted for T5HO as well.

I am building this one for a 10gal refugium where I intend to sustain colonies of small crustateans (e.g. copepods, amphypods) at the moment. I plant to go with two 10,000k, one 18,000K and one actinic. I wish phyto and zooplancton to thrive there.

Not the best pics (my battery charger for my cam is misplaced so these pics come from my cell)

Do you think this would work? Using hamster tunnels/ tubes as an aqua/ tank bridge? Or no?

thx

EDIT after 27 replies.... concept image added
and words below added.......

Picture 1 - Shows the basic shape of my half hexi-/ octo- shaped fish tank.

Picture 2 - Is an top view of my tank, including showcasing the position of my;light switch, power line/ cord, and my air-stone house

Also circled in the blue and were the mini stars are, is the (semi-)removable slots that I will intsert the tubes through.

Picture 3 - My idea for how the extension using hamster tubes and such will look like.

Picture 4 - Shows a side profile of what my tank will look like with the hamster tube extensions added to it. I have the opening below the surface line, indicated by the red lines.

So what do you all think? Of course I'm going to have to add additional support for behind my tank/ on the hall behind my tank to support the extension.

Hello,
I'm just wondering if anyone has ever heard of a long, and narrow fish tank, that isn't very high from the ground. The dimenions would be like; 9" wide, 9" hight, and maybe like twenty feet long, if that makes sense. I was thinking of it being something that can be a large ### gallon wise, but something that won't be extremely heavy in one place, and crash through my apartment floor. So I'm envisioning a long and narrow fish tank this is long and floor hugging. Something that doesn't take up too much size width wide, but still spacious....

Thoughts???

I'm a student, so my fish tank bugdet only exopands so far, and I'm saving for a water testing kit, so thats my main concern is that, and I was hoping to use something I already have to keep the airstone 'ancered', and I was wondering if a label free green-tinted empty glass wine bottle would be safe in my tank? :;dk

Thanks so much

I would like to move my 20 gal. aquarium and was looking for advice. My plan was to fill a 5 gal. tank with established water from the 20 gal. and place the fish in there short term. I can move the other 15 gallons via a few 5 gallon buckets and use the same water to fill the tank once it is moved to the new location.

Does it sound like a workable plan or does someone else have a better solution?
