| Pictus aren't really suitable for hard, alkaline water, and prefer to be kept in groups. Synodontis species are generally a better mix, or an Asian upside-down catfish.
S. eupterus will grow to 6-7", same with S. angelicus, and should be fine with mbuna given a suitably furnished tank. There are also mixed Synodontis species commonly labelled "Lace cats" that are generally alright. Avoid S. decorus, they grow quite large, and the common upside-down catfish (S. nigriventris) are small, but they prefer to be kept in groups as well.
Asian UD cats are occaisonally available at Wal-Mart, look like Synodontis spp, but they're completely black all over with a few "flakes" of gold or silver on their sides. |
