compatible new pair?

So last monday (5 days ago) i bought 4 1 1/2 inch electric yellow cichlids. they were the only four in the tank and i was worried about the whole sex thing. since they are not large enough to be sexed i have no guarantee that they are going to be compatible and the right ratio of males to females. i felt a little bit more comfortable since they were the only 4 electric yellows in the tank and they seemed to be getting along and continued to even in my tank. today i found one dead in one of the plants. i tested my water and all my parameters are perfect so i'm going to the store to get a refund and get another. the only thing i'm now worried about is how am i going to pick out one that will be compatible with the others if i don't know the sex of all of them? haha this was sort of confusing i hope everyone understands what i'm trying to say

When I had my y ellow lab breeding coloney I had 2 males and 2 females by complete accident, I had meant for 1 male and 3 females. I got a great mixture w/ the fish. The fact they were a long two other breeding groups in the tank kept the aggression down.
