I Know that alot of limestone in a cichlid tank always helps.

That will raise your PH

Snails should be fine in there and they should clean up your tank in no time.

I would think that the snails could end up being dinner for the cichilds? Im not sure. I wouldn't have any wood in a tank with malawi fish, they need a ph of 7.6-8.6 and the wood lowers the ph. Using crushed coral for a substrate, limestone for decor, or other ph/water hardening materials is what the malawi cichlids like.

make sure you are cleaning the sides and front of the glass every other day at least, and vaccuming the tank once a week, also they do appricicate water changes 2 times a week (one being the vaccuming), that will take care of the "dirty tank" the cichlids love to eat algae off the back wall of your aquarium as well.

I would also check for high nitrates and phosphates in your water to see if that is aiding in agae growth, if so then putting a poly-filter in the reg filter will help, remember w/ malawi cichlids they need frequent water changes and a lot of filtiration.

Labs love snails. What she ^ said is true. 2 or more water changes is fine with them a week. Especially if you notice your tank is dirty.

minus the point that the labs eat snails for a snack, then will poop out the snails and make more waste to make the tank nastier.
