They should be getting ready. Some say if you simulate seasonal changes typical for spawning that particular fish, it will breed easier...more food, fresh or frozen, cooler water to simulate spring water run-off, frequent water changes or less water changes (different folks have had different results), changing lighting patterns to match natural daylight schedules... For me, it seems when I feed blood worms, my fish go into breeding mode - I haven't had fry from my cichlids yet - they are too young and have eaten their fry before they spit.

Good luck.

It took me a good 6 months w/ my cichlids to get mine to breed. I had bought them all at the same size. I have had them breed smaller than adult size and at adult size. In fact my polits are a litte small right now and they are like rabbits right now, I just had several fry spit a couple weeks ago, and I have 2 holding polit moms already (I am proud of those girls they spit the fry and are ready to get out of the brooding tanks, natural breeding girls) My hongi girls did the same of coarse I have learned to give the fry plenty places to go and hide when she spits so she can't eat them and watch her close, a good offering of food will make her forget about eatting her young, then net her out of the brooding tank.

I haven't done anything different w/ my water, however the sced has changed w/ the lighting due to my sons school, I turn the tank lights on a little earlier (at daylight) and they get cut off at dark. So I am sure that helps. I only have one tank w/o timers though.

Usually by 3" they're totally ready. Sometimes a little smaller.

It will be a little while if they are that small right now. They do grow fast, and they will breed at smaller than adult size about 2/3 the adult size, however they do not produce as much fry as they should, and the fry do not do as well as they do as an adult cichlid will produce, not to mention they are bad for eating their fry and swallowing their eggs, etc.

I would give it a few months at least.
