cichlid

I have a 28 gallon fish tank and was wondering if i could have a yellow cichlid. I have two swordtails and two platys and lots of rocks. I'm asking this because some people had yellow cichlids in there community fish tanks. The one I will get will be about 3cm big. I want one because i like marine fish but i can't have one because of my tight buget so i'm make my freshwater into a marine secnery. So can i have one. that is the only cichlid i will add or should i just turn it into a cichlid tank. How many cichlid can i put becaue a fish store lady told me that only about two but other people have about 15 and they say thier fish are happy and healthy. Some web sites also said the electric yellow cichlid is one of the peacefulest cichlids.

HI, WELCOME TO FISHLORE!

I'm not a cichlid person, so hope someone comes along soon to answer your question. There should be some information that can help under the "ARTICLES" heading at the top of this page. Open that up and click on fish profiles......you should be able to find your fish there.

You can't put any yellow labs in with those fish. African cichlids have different water requirements and are pretty aggressive when it comes to territorial stuff and breeding mode. A 28g is too small for them anyway. They will kill the rest of your fish when they mature. African cichlids should be in a species only tank.
If you want a cichlids in your tank try some dwarf species like kribensis or german blue rams. Or a pair of angels

You can depending on the nature of your individual betta. He may fight with your other fish tho. Just have lots of hiding spots, caves, plants and it could work out. But have 3-5g ready for him in case it doesn't work out.

Most bettas don't do well in a community tank... yellow labs do require higher ph's and are aggressive towards other fish and wouldn't be friendly w/ the fish you have. Have you thought about the german blue rams like Allie mentioned? I have been wanting a pair for ages, they are very bright colored and would fit the description. Their water requirements are lower ph that your other fish can tolerate also.

Pretty sure that was a yup to both. You can do rams or kribs, whichever color you prefer. They both require lower pH than your african cichlid variety.

Either, I just prefer the kribs. I figured if you wanted yellow krib females have got yellow & more.

Careful with them. They need well kept water, always stable, not bouncing around after water changes, etc. Nice ones are pricey fish, most cichlids are though to be honest.

Oscars require large tanks, like 90gallons they grow to be huge fish.
Cichlids for your size tank would be blue rams, bolivian rams, kribs, angel fish... Discus require really high temps, and very stable water (ph, nitrites -0-, amonia -0- soft water)
