Hi and welcome.

I am amazed that you are keeping your tank that well controlled given the stocking!

I have always been told that adding a female DG in with a male helps the male but in yout tank it will cause you some problems if they decide to mate.

Did I say i am amazed at your tank 22.5" rising to 25" of fish in 4 gals I can only assume that not only are you fastidious at keeping up with the water changes but that the packing density is preventing aggression getting out of control.

My advise is not to add anything else and if you can swing it, it would be a good idea to get a larger tank.

What level never exceeds 3ppm?
Not only would I be concerned about the amount of waste in that amount of water with that many fish, I would also worry about stunting their growth.

It amazes me that a fish store would give someone such poor advice.
Really, none of your fish are suited to that size tank. You might be able to get away with the guppies for a little while.

Honestly in that tank I would if i was prepared to keep on top of the water changes that i know would have to do almost every other day i would keep

The Guppies
or
The Dannios
Or
The Tetras
Or
1 betta

The RAMS would need 20 gals not 20 Ltrs

The Gouramis if they are Honeys and only 2.5" fish I may consider instead of the Guppies in that list above.

One thing though I never believe what the tank manufacturer says the tank will hold becaause they use the OUTSIDE dimensions to calculate the volume which I think is a con, but I digress.

When I list the size of any of my tanks that is the volume of water i actually hand counted into the tank after i have put the substrate and any large decorations into the tank.

If you do the same you will have a better idea of the volume of water you have to play with.

the 'general' rule is 1" of fish per gallon of water now that has to be tempered with also making sure that the fish has space to turn round in the tank and swim.

So a 12" fish in an 18" long tank holding 15Gallons is not going to fit.

Always base your stocking not on how big the immature fish is when you buy it and put in the tank but on how big the fish will be when it reaches maturity.

welcome to fishlore!!!

at 3 for nitrate, im wondering what test kit you are using as ive never heard of that reading ?

adding the female will probably throw the tank in havoc as there isnt enough space for her to get away and hide from the male...he will probably harrass her to no end

Looking for tanks on a student budget is quite restrictive remember to try Manchester Freecycle (its a yahoo group) then there is ebay, classified adds and notice boards in the Student Uni

Do you have Craig's List there? That's also a great resource for used tanks.
I agree Freecycle is great for lots of things!
