What are the different colors of the DG?

Ok this might sound dumb but what are the exact names for the color variations of the DG. Some seem to have more then one, and most of them look the same. I've looked at some pictures and what I thought I bought at my LFS was a male blue powder I'm starting to think is a female neon blue...but that just from comparing to other ppl's pictures was wondering if anyone has pics of different kinds and the correct names for them.
Is a honey gourami considered a color variation of a dwarf....I'm so confussed there are to many differnt kinds to keep straight and I'd like to try to find some of each color

Hi Pa.

The honey gourami is not the same as a dwarf gourami, although they are both in the same family. The honey gourami is smaller than the dwarf gourami.

As for the dwarfs, there are names for all the colour variants. Such as flame DG, coral blue DG and red and blue DG. They are all slightly different -but only in their clouring, although some might be more delicate than others. The different colours are created by selective line breeding, and all originate from the common DG. It's like tiger barbs -there are green tiger barbs, red tiger barbs and albino tiger barbs. All these are just colour variants of the common tiger barb.

You say that there are different names but they look the same, this is because there may be more than one common name for one colour variant.
As for you thinking that your blue powder is actually a female neon, females are generally plain silver/grey. One way to make sure is that males have a more pointed dorsal fin and females is sloped.

Hope I have been some help.

Ah thanks I think it was the honey that was really throwing me off. when i bought it it was listed as a red flame DG but since then i i found out that it was a honey and that explains why its smaller and more slender then my others. my female and that has got to be what it is it light blue with some very light silvery vertical lines and the rounded dorsil fin.

Are the females all the same coloe or do they come in all the color varients too?

I'm not sure about that one. I'll leave it to the more experienced.

The females come in different colors as well, but the differences between the varieties isn't as drastic as it is in the males since they have a silver/gray cast to them. I'll try to get pics of my girls this weekend when I go home...I've got a female neon blue and a "standard" female. The color varieties that I've seen/know about are powder blue, sunset, flame, neon blue, and standard, although there certainly may be others as well that I'm not aware of. I'm attaching pictures below in the same order that I just listed them so you can see the differences. All the pics below are males so you can see the color differences better (the powder blue and flame are my boys :P).

Part of your confusion about the honey gourami is that many pet stores mis-label them, often calling a sunset dwarf gourami and honey gourami or a honey sunset gourami, when in actuality they are different fish.
