my dwarf gourami died, was it iridovirus

Hi

My poor little dwarf gourami died, he was so cute. His name was Frank Sinatra, I think it may have been iridovirus. Everyone I heard here talking about it seemed to be in America or that side of the world. I live in Ireland so was sort of surprised. I was reading up about it and seems to be some sort of genetic thing so I suppose if they originate in asia doesnt matter where you live.

Where I get my fish is really good, always healthy, the guy really cares andonly takes good fish from good breeders.

Anyway about 2days ago frank was staying near bottom of tank and just sort of lying there but then would swim a little around tank so I knew it wasnt just swim bladder as I had fish who had that and was different. Next day Frank just sorta lay there. Didnt eat or do anything. I moved him to a bowl with a heater and then put him in a little floaty container in tank as i only have one heater so couldnt leave out of tank for long.I read here someone had idea if he was close to surface is easier for him to breath. at about midnight he died though.

Its really sad as he was super healthy til a few days ago

I wish there was some cure for this or prevention i wonder how many stores are aware or if people just presume the fish died and dont question it much so it goes under reported outside of forums

poor poor frank sinatra i'll miss him

It does sound like it could have been iridovirus, but there is no way to be sure without a necropsy.

That's exactly how the two I got died. Beautiful and healthy with good appetite for a week or two, then staying the bottom, not eating, then dying rapidly. Mine had no sign at all of any disease, rot, fungus - nothing at all.

I'm very sorry you lost him. I know how easy it is to get attached to these charming little guys.

Here's a link...the article is near the bottom of the page.
Dwarf gourami iridovirus is apparently specific to the dwarf gourami (Colisa lalia), including the various fancy varieties of the species, such as neon gouramis and sunset gouramis. Infected fish develop a variety of symptoms, including loss of color, decrease in activity and appetite, the appearance of sores and lesions on the body, abdominal swelling and finally death. This fish disease is highly contagious, completely untreatable and invariably fatal.

Sebastian one of my betta who died over the past while had all of these symptoms including the sores and lesions. He was the only one out of the 11 who died that had all of these symptoms. I wonder if he had the iridovirus?
