I've heard a lot of stuff about these guys being a little aggressive at times, but the new one I got seems to be almost timid. He is terrified of the platties I have, it seems like. Also he either seems to be right at the bottom or up at the top. Is that normal behavior?

Having never had one, I can only speak from what I've read and heard. Since it's new it may still be getting used to the tank... but, that doesn't necessarily mean it'll be a mean one. Fish differ in personality so you never know what you get, at least not for a while

As gourami have a special "labyrinth organ" that allows them to breathe air they go to the surface every so often to use it.
