Sick Gouramis

Can anyone help me, my gouramis keep keep sick and die. I have a 10 gallon tank, 2 angel fish, 1 silver dollar, 3 tetras and 2 gouramis. My gouramis keep loosing weight look gaunt and them become lethargic, then die. My readings are ammonia 0, nitrate 0, nitrite 0, pH 7.4. All other fish are fine. Is it the food? Flake food is all I use and a small peice of a spirulina disk for silver dollar. I am only new to this but would love some advice. The gouramis are my favourite fish. I have lost 3 already and now have 2 new ones and they are both showing the same signs as the others, it is so disheartening.

Hi barbara...sorry about your fish dieing but you are overstocked for a 10 gallon....im wondering what test kit you are using because im thinking your ammonia and nitrates might be wrong with so many fish in that lil tank..? also, how old is the tank? if at all possible, a bigger tank is needed before you add any more fish...

I do 20% water changes weekly and clean glass and gravel. A gut infection seems to fit as their stomachs to look pertruded slightly. I know I am over stocked and have a new bigger tank coming but need to get it set up and the cycle happening. I have a chemical test kit - with test tubes etc. I was told that this is the best one. My tank is now 5 months old. I will got to me LFS and see what new food they have and a worming treatment - thanks I will give this a try.

it sounds like nitrates are high...if you have the API liquid test kit, which is the BEST, really bang and shake well the nitrate bottles ...specially the #2 because I think it gave you a false reading...with so many fish in that 10 gallon, and changing the water only once a week, that reading is hard to believe....have you seen white poo from the fish? if not, I dont think its a parasite or worms...I hope things get better
