Spotted Wood!!

Can anyone tell me what these white spots are? This is new Malaysian wood that came pre-packaged. It is soaking in dechlorinated water in a new tank in a dark place. There were a few spots when I first rinsed it off but now there are heaps of them. Does anyone know if it will be safe to use & how I can get rid of the spots? I can scrub them off where I can get a scrubbing brush into but there a lots in places I can't get to that I want to remove. They are hard to scrub off & I'm just hoping they don't come back in these places.

Looks like some type of fungus Nutter.
I have had that happen a few times to me when I added a new piece of driftwood, usually goes away on it's own within a few weeks.

Yeah, I am thinking of fungus myself. It just strikes me as rather odd that it was already on the wood when I bought it & is getting worse now that it is underwater. Wish I noticed the spots before I bought it!
It will get covered with Java Fern & moss eventually so the look doesn't bother me that much, so long as it isn't going to cause problems for her fish & plants.

Good morning. Here are a couple of links to some interesting reading on Driftwood:

Thank you Ken. The first link doesn't work though. Thought I should let you know.
I think I'll just boil it for an hour or so then give it a good scrub then boil it again. A quick scrub after that should make it ok I think. I'll also keep a close eye on it & see how it fares for a few months before I attach the moss & fern to it for her.

Thanks for the help guys.

Hello Nutter. Try this one:
Driftwood Notes
I think you'll be fine by boiling it.

New driftwood will go through a bacteria bloom just like when establishing a new tank.

It should clear up on its own
