driftwood from local lakes ?

can i get driftwood from local lakes and use in my tanks ? I know I would have to sterilize them really well but is it advisable or should I buy some from LFS? what about river rock -can I do the same with it ??

Be sure to boil it throughly and possibly bleach it to kill harmful organisms. then soak it in a bucket and change the water daily untill it stops staining the water. also, try to get a hard wood rather than a soft wood, which can rot easier
