just wondering how to tell if wood is driftwood, and can i use drift wood from my local river?

Hi jwokmuba2. Good question, I'm not sure as well. Wait for a more experienced member to tell you. But yeah, I heard of some aquarist using driftwood from the river. But making sure you give it a good soak and wash for a day or two will work out just fine. Good luck!

You can use hard woods. Avoid pine and cedar. It would be a good idea to boil it to help sterilize it and release some of the tannins acid.
