can you get a picture of it? that might help some members identify what kind of wood it is and if it's safe to use

It looks like a great peice of wood. It would be a really good idea to watch for the sharp pointy edges, wouldn't want anyone's fins getting snagged or an eye poked.

I'm not postive about this but I'm pretty sure if it was pine, you would have seen sap bubbling out when you boiled it. It know if you burn pine you can see it.
You should also be able to smell it if it's pine or cedar.
Since it's not water logged, it might not sink. I think the links I gave you have some suggestions about getting it to stay down.

Can't tell what kind of tree but sure is a nice piece!!! Scratch the wood deeply and smell it....you will know it it is pine or cedar. Is it from a dead tree?...or green tree? Dead would be best but I would try it anyway....cook it ...ie boil...see what comes out if just tannins you good to go.....this is just my opinion....really worth the try it is beautiful.

You could put it in a big metal pail and put it on a bbq grill or an outdoor fireplace to boil it...
