Driftwood Problems + (Odor?)

Ok so, I just received a BUNCH of beautiful discarded pieces of DW from a tank at the museum where I work, where it was located in a Malawi Cichlid tank (and had no business there whatsoever).

The water in that tank was BROWN because of the driftwood, and the driftwood had been there for a good while already.

I am trying to cure it, but it is proving rather difficult. I just added hot water to it yesterday and the water is now smelling badly. Also, I wonder how effective that method of curing is, since the wood had already been in a tank for a long time and kept leaching tannins all the time?

Cannot boil it, they are HUGE pieces and I dont have a pot big enough. Also, its the very end of winter here in Chicago and it is cold, so the Sun will not be much help either. I have heard of the chlorine method but I am reluctant to use it.

Will something else do? ammonia? Anything? baking soda, hydrogen peroxide?

Thanks!
