What is growing on my driftwood?

I added a small piece of driftwood to my tank for my pleco yesterday, but I woke up today to find something growing on it (and my pleco dead, but that's another story, probably not related to the driftwood ). It looks like really fine hair, a couple of millimeters long... Another way to describe it would be that it looks like snot.

I took the driftwood out because I wasn't sure what it was. Fungus? Bacteria? Algae?

Any ideas?

I already took it out of the aquarium - not really excited to put it back in...

Just did some searching: http://www.aquaticplantcentral.com/f...driftwood.html

I guess it's harmless. I'll plop it back in and see what happens...

thats good! whenever you put driftwood in a tank, it's a good idea to either boil it or pour boiling water over it. that will kill any nasty bacteria or anything else that might be growing on it.
