Question about driftwood

I just bought a couple pieces of driftwood for my new 55g tank. Ballpark figure... how much soaking time does it usually take to get it to the point where it will stay submerged? I have the two pieces soaking now in my old 29g tank.

There's lots of factors that determine soaking time. type of wood, thickness, length, cured, uncured, dried, etc. Lots of factors.

If you're just trying to get it to sink, I would wieght it down. If you're soaking to remove tannins, then it may take a while.Depending on the other factors mentioned. If you're quarantining the wood to make sure it doesn't have anything you need to worry about, then I would suggest 3 weeks.

Knowing what type of wood, how big, cured, etc would help to answer the question.

If its mopani wood... don't try to soak it to get that annins out, ain't gunna work. I have mopani wood in my tanks that have been in there for around 7-8 months now and still arn't done leaching.. AND I soaked them too. But it sank right away. I had to soak my one piece for a week with slate on the bottom for it to stay down.

Ok, so I have the 2 pieces of driftwood soaking. I looked in the tank yesterday and noticed a white colored fuzz on the wood in a couple spots. It almost looks like white colored mold. Any ideas what it is?

algae possibly? maybe a pic of it would help in figuring out what it is?

anyways, i was lucky enough that my driftwood was already waterlogged when i bought it, and i just put carbon in my filter for a little while to keep it from getting that tea color that can happen.

The white is more than likely fungus, it is harmless and will eventually go away (otos like to eat it also)
