Betta and driftwood?

As I went to change the water on the driftwood I've been soaking for Brewster's tank, it suddenly occured to me that the wood is full of sharp pointy spots. They would definitely snag a pair of pantyhose, so I imagine they are a danger to his beautiful fins.

Do I just start sanding them down? Does anyone else have driftwood in their betta tanks?

I had driftwood with my betta in a 10 gal. His fins kept getting ripped, no matter how much I sanded the wood. But I don't think I did a thorough enough job.

If you want to try and sand it until every part is smooth as silk, it could work, but that's hard to do if there's lots of branching and pointy parts.

Start out with medium grade sandpaper, and finish with fine grade.

Hmmm... I suspect I may need to find a different piece. Husband chose this one for it's aesthetic qualities and I'm afraid it will be a toothpick by the time I sand off all the points!

Thanks for your input.

LOL MP,
my husband also brought home a huge beautiful piece of driftwood that he got from a friend, he was so proud of himself lol. It looked like a large octopus with all its arms. A really beautiful piece. I said.. hmmmm.. thats not going to fit in the 55. He said we can cut off some of the arms. well.. that would surely destroy the aesthetics of the piece.I imagined how ugly the piece would look once we cut off enough to fit the 55 lol. So there it sits still, in a corner.
If you do come across any driftwood that needs to be sanded, does your husband happen to have a elec. sander? It would be a lot easier than trying to use sand paper which I have tried on some of my own pieces.

I have driftwood in most of my bettas tanks. I never sanded off any rough bit and their tails are just fine.

Wally sleeps on his and wraps around a pointy bit.
