| Good tank mates for dojos? Right now Ying and Yang are the only 2 gold dojos i have in my tank. i'm wanting to add a splash of color to my tank and add a couple of more fish. I was thinking fancy goldfish or dalmatian mollies. I read they are big poopers though. Any other suggestions? What types of fish share the tank with your dojos?
Thanks! |

| Well you can't mix Goldfish in with Tropical fish because they have different temp needs. Goldfish are a cold water fish.....should be kept in 65-72 range.....as Tropical are 78-82. Discus are 86. Not sure what the temp is for the loaches that you have....maybe they like cooler water, lol! Besides Goldfish are messy!!!
Oh btw what size tank do you have? Last edited by AlyeskaGirl; April 30th, 2009 at 02:30 AM.

| how large is the tank? dojo loaches (if they're the loach i'm thinking of) actually prefer and thrive in coldwater tanks, so IMO goldfish would be the best choice |

| i have them in a 10 gal right now. As far as I know and what i've read online they like colder waters. I like the look of koi so thought the fancy goldfish would be nice, but really like the dalmatians too.... so many choices! LOL |

| yeah a 10 gallon is going to be much too small for your loaches permanently, i think they can get up to 11 inches so you'll need a much larger tank |

| Yep DOJOs temperature range is 50-77F and will need a larger tank real soon. They are very active and need lots of room to swim. Mine are the brownish Dojos and they are really fun to watch when they have room to move
Here's a cool article about them http://www.loaches.com/species-index...guillicaudatus
Here is another article that lists fish they are compatible with http://www.loaches.com/articles/weather-report
Mine are really easy to feed but their favorites are thawed frozen blood worms, thawed frozen glass worms and shrimp pellets.

| Yeah. I've been thinking to eventually house them in an outdoor pond tank. I live in Santa Barbara, CA and have an atrium where I have my flower/plant pot garden. I think they would love it! Any advice or things to look out for concerning keeping dojos outside in a little pond would be great, or how about keeping a 30+ gal glass tank outside in my garden area for them? It is pretty shaded there. which would be the better?
Thanks for all your advice so far I've been gobbling it all up. lol I'm so in love with my dojos and really want the best for them.

| If you were to keep dojos outside in a pond, I would recommend a pond of 100+ gallons. You can get above the ground preformed ponds at home depot that are very easy to set up |

If you don't want to dig it in just set the preformed pond on the ground and put pots around it to hide the bottom.

| Great! Thanks for the idea. I'll look into that. Cant dig, my atrium is concrete. lol So that sounds perfect. I'll check out our local home depot. Right now they're in a 10 gal which i know they'll out grow quickly.

| This is my Daughters "Pond" on her porch. That's where I got the idea for an above ground pond

| That is sooo awsome! I love it. Perfect for what I have in mind. does it need an outlet for a pump or filter of any kind? Thanks for sharing! Would a plastic kids pool work? or is it not deep enough? What size is your daughter's pond and what does she have in it? |

She has goldfish in it. I personally would put a filter in it for water movement but hers does just great with out, her goldfish even spawned. She found babies a couple of weeks ago
Glad you like it I thought it was really unique.

| Though many people will recommend goldfish as companions, I've sucessfully kept dojo loaches (a breeding pair) in my 125 gallon tank which sits at around 75 degrees. They've shared the tank with blue rams, many livebearers, angelfish, and plecos. As long as none of the fish are aggresive they should be alright. |
