| Neat looking loach, have never seen em at any of the local shops, or kuhli's for that matter. I wanted to try kuhli's but already did a medium sized gravel substrate, I read they need a finer sand substrate. |

Lot cheaper than LFS and not too mention rescueing some, lol.
They can even live in moist mud with no actual water since have ability to breath air. Actually cold water species which can do well in warmer water (not too high for long period of time although midday water temp can go as high as upper 80's or higher in their natural biotope) as is found in rice paddies with shallow, muddy and stagnant water along with paradise fish and other gouramis.. | The tank their in is a 75g, temp about 76-77F, that kind of catches the Dojos top temp and the Kuhlis lowest temp requirements. Everybody seems really happy and active. I read they were raised and sold for food fish in their native countries I prefer this DoJo over the gold which is I believe a human developed color morph.

Carol | Looks like Angel is getting bit jealous! Must be crying out loud, "I want/need some TLC too"!, lol.
I dont think Gold is man made color morphs. It does happen in nature depending on locations, so i've read somewhere, sometime ago. Last edited by cerianthus; March 9th, 2009 at 09:46 PM.

| I went back and re-read the article I had read about them http://www.loaches.com/species-index...guillicaudatus and I agree with you. I don't know how I got that they were a man made color morph from that. Thanks for keeping me straight

Carol | No big deal! Carol. By now, you know how much I am against Man Made Fish, lol. I believe, deep in my heart, every naturally occuring fish have their own beauty and characteristics. It just depends on who does appreciate such beauty. IMO. I must have been a fish in previous life as my Mother used to say, lol! |

You know, it took me while to realize what you were talking about! Time goes too fast but I remember the times when I used think/say the opposite! |

| Your new loaches are so cute Carol I wanted to keep dojos in my pond, but I was afraid it would get to cold for them. I agree with your color preference. I always see the golden ones at Petsmart and I don't like them as much. Now I just have one question for you.....how many loaches do you have now? Quote:

I love that movie!!! | Didnt mean to cut in but if you are in So Ca, do you need to bring them in when it gets cold? Depending on outside temp, it may be possible. |

They are constantly going in circles with the Kuhlis Quote: |

| How cold does it get there? The article I linked said they could go down to 50F and I suspect a little lower than that. with a good temperature change and a big rain in the spring I bet they would breed for you

| What are you feeding them? Do they eat snails, Ive read a lot of mixed info on the dojos eating habbits.
Also do they have the "eye barbs" (dont know what they are really called)? |

So far I've fed shrimp pellets(which they took out of my fingers before I could turn loose of them), thawed frozen myasis shrimp, thawed frozen blood worms, broken up veggie wafers, flaked (from the top of the water) so far they haven't refused anything. I don't have any snails in that tank but did see them checking some empty shells out. Quote: |

| Their called Suboccular spines No I don't think so. I am not positive but I think the botine(ones with pointed noses) Loaches are the only ones that have them.

Carol | Oh I meant total, not just dojos, lol
You are giving me ideas now It gets down to about 50 degrees here in the winter. For a group of 3 I would probably need a huge container pond though, don't you think? I don't think they would fit in the 55 gallon with my kuhlis. Maybe another 55 gallon pond |

| I live in Santa Barbara, CA. I was thinking the same thing.... to keep my 2 gold dojos out in my atrium and create a pond for them when they out grow their indoor tank. I have them in a 10 gal right now with no other fish. I know i'll need a bigger as they grow.
maybe on the rare super cold nights put a heater in their pond? will they crawl out of a pond? that would be awsome if I could do that. Must research that, any comments on this subject would be great! |

Don't know how much the heater would run or affect the elec bill .
I'm sure they would love being outside. I've not heard of any crawling out of their ponds.
Update.
The tank now has
2 dojos- going into cooler tank
5 Clown Loaches
3 striped Kuhlis
6 corys
6 platys
6 threadfin rainbows- going to another tank
