My Dog Is Too Well-Behaved

One of my dogs is a rescued lab mix named Jake. He bit humans twice and attacked one dog before I signed the papers on him. He was becoming a "liability" for the dog rescue organization I fostered with because you have to disclose a dog's bite history. And he was abused, so you can get an idea of how messed up he was when he came here.

He's been great since we've had him and we've really worked with his dog aggression and fear, taught him it's not his job to protect the pack, it's ours, etc and so on.

I train dogs as a second job. We tried to use my giant schnauzer (109 lbs) for a dog-aggressive dog, but when we tried to use him, he wasn't dominant enough to correct the dog for misbehavior. So today, we tried Jake.

Apparently, I've taught Jake too well that he has nothing to fear and he's not in charge of when to protect the pack, etc because he wouldn't correct this dog-aggressive dog either. This client's dog was at the end of his leash snarling, growling and Jake and Jake totally ignored him. I'm proud of Jake, but we needed him to be a little naughty today.

Dog psychology analyzing tells me that he trusts his alpha (me) so much, that he doesn't need to worry about other dogs or people regardless of how aggressive they're acting.

Just a cute little story I though you guys would enjoy!

Jake sounds like a great dog.
How long did it take him to adjust and stop being aggressive?

I've had him two years this coming November. It took three weeks and my giant schnauzer's help to put him on a leash (someone had beaten him with one, so he thought it was going to hurt him). It took six months before he played (he was so serious). The only one he's never feared is my daughter. They've been buddies the entire time.

He hasn't been aggressive towards a "balanced dog" in around a year. However, as of a month ago, if an "unbalanced dog" came at him, his hackles would go up and he'd tense. I've always been able to verbally snap him out of it. A quick "no" and "leave it" and he'd settle down. He didn't even react today. I didn't tell him no or leave it. He's a stinker

I really admire people like you who can teach, train, tame, dogs. I really don't have the patience as evidenced by our 3 Shih Tzus that have no manners, use the basement as a toilet, and I'm sure believe we are their pets.
So you truely have my admiration and respect.

My goodness, thank you very much. I really appreciate that.

Shih-Tzuhs are a very fun and interesting breed. They'll definitely take over if given the opportunity. But gosh, they're so cute!
