Our dog has cataracts :(

Our old chocolate lab has cataracts. His name is Wally (we didn't name him lol) and he was the only one in his litter. We've had him for a very long time, well over 10 years.
My dad said that he let Wally into the garage to walk around, since we can't really let him run around anymore cause he'll leave (that and he doesn't run anymore). When Wally kept bumping into stuff my dad looked at his eyes and they were all grey. I asked my dad what he was gonna do, and he said, "well, i'm not gonna put him in clove oil." That made me laugh. From what it sounds like there's nothing we can do about it, and dad doesn't wanna put him down, so it looks like we'll just let what will be be.

Cataracts are very common in sporting dogs...This is why breeders need to have testing done for SLT/PRA...It's a bummer when a pet owner is faced with this...If he just blew his cats at 10 that's not too bad...Sometimes cats are age related and not genetic...Putting him down should not even be an option...I've had many old dogs that lived just fine with cataracts..

I'm sorry PFP, that's so sad when our pets get old.

When I was little and also in my adult life, we've had an old dogs with caterats. They lived for years.

Once Wally get used to where the furniture is and they lay out of the house, you'll be surprised at how well they adapt.
You will have to put your shoes away and try not to block a path he's used to taking.

Don't forget their sense of smell is much greater than ours and will probably get keener to make up for his lack of sight.

awe, sorry about your ole boy's aging eyes. at least he has a warm safe home to adjust to his aging changes, we could all hope for that as we age. glad to hear your dad doesn't want to put him in clove oil,(lol) but stick by him i can see where you get your caring heart for animals and people.

i found this article of some tips that your family can follow to ensure his adjustment and safety as he looses his vision:

hugs for your boy and you and your family

Actually... I feel kinda bad saying this... but he's an outside dog. My mom won't hear of having a dog in the house. But his little house in his kennel is always filled with lots of hay, and we often bring him into the garage if it gets really cold outside. We've tried giving him warm pillows and beds to sleep in, but he always tears those up, lol. Thanks for the article minx.
