| | Fish Bum | Why does my dog's poop have yellow spots? I have a 5 months old mini schnauzer. About a month ago, he was diagnosed with giardia, treated for it, and retested. The second test came out negative and everything he was healthy for along time. During the past week, he started of having diarrhea every evening and on Wednesday, threw up 3 times during the night and had really bad diarrhea. I called the vet in the morning and he said it's probably food poisoning. He recommended feeding him boiled chicken breast and plain white rice for two days and testing him again for parasites just to make sure. We have been keeping up with that diet and his parasite test came back normal. His diarrhea has pretty much gone away. His stool is a little softer than usual but much much better than before. However, for the last 3 days, his stool has been really full of little yellow round balls. The balls are about the size of cous cous but are the color of yellow curry.Could they have missed the parasites and would a parasite even be visible and this large? He has not really been going outside except for the walks and I have been very careful to watch what he eats since he is getting over the food poisoning. I have never heard of anything like this but his my first puppy so there is a lot I still don't know. Last edited by anpa1019; August 16th, 2008 at 09:47 PM.

| | Fish Master | Tape worm eggs are about that size. Is there anything that resembles rice aroud the dogs rectum? That would symbolize tape worms. The dog was treated with strongid, I would assume. It may also be something that the dog has eaten that was not digested and is showing up in its stool. |

| | Fish Master | Tape worms are generally flat not round...They are white not yellow so I'd have to say that is probably not what you are seeing....It sounds like something he is eating not like worms to me...You may want to ask your Vet to do a floatation test on him for worms and parasites...There are several different parasites the floatation will test for...Coccidia being one...Coccidia is transferred to dogs by bird poop...Does he run where any bird dropping are? I'm assuming he has had several rounds of DHPPC vaccines so we can almost certainly rule out parvo....
What are you feeding this puppy now? Also have you taken his temp? |

| | Fish Bum | He just had the flotation test done yesterday and the vet called me this morning to say the results came back negative for everything. I thought it was something he is eating also but I am seeing it every time he goes to the bathroom for the 3 days now...I really doubt he is eating the same thing every day, multiple times a day. This guy will eat anything and everything though. I have pulled out everything from leaves, candy wrappers, cigarette buds, and popcorn from his mouth. I try to watch him as much as I can but he is way but he still manages to sneaks things by.
Today was his first day back to regular food. He eats Chicken Soup for the Dog Lover's souls, about 1/2 cup a day. I haven't taken his temp because I don't have the right thermometer but I think he is feeling ok. He is has been sleeping all the day but he a long action filled morning. It's been pretty hot around here lately so I think that's why he is a little lazier than usual. In the morning and at night once it cools down, he is back to being his crazier, out of control terrier self. |

| | Fish Master | I'm not sure what chicken soup for the dog lovers is but if you want to get him on an easy to digest diet and avoid a finicky adult dog I'd switch him over to Eukanuba small bite puppy formula ...It is what I have fed my puppies for almost 30 years and it works very well..Depending on his weight I'd feed him twice a day I'm guessing 1/2 cup at each feeding...He does not need can food or additives...This food is a complete diet full of vitamins...
Can you post a photo of the little guy? |

| | Moderator | Just guessing here. Could it be the rice he has been eating? I know rice is easy to digest but it will also come through whole if not chewed

| | Fish Bum | Sorry for the confusion, he is not eating chicken soup. While his tummy hurts, I give him rice and boiled chicken breast. The chicken soup is the brand of the kibble he usually eats that was recommended by the breeder and is all natural with no additives.
Here are some pictures of the little trouble maker. He is about 5 and half months old right now and his name is Cooper. |

Have you discussed the problems you are having with his breeder? A responsible breeder would be willing to help ...Cute clip on him by the way! |

| | Fish Bum | Could teething be making him act funny? He is has lost most of his baby teeth except for the huge back molars. Maybe is's painful and it's making him cranky. I know babies get diarrhea when they are teething maybe dogs do that too? He does this super cute thing where when he is laying down on his back, he uses his front two feet to rub his cheeks and face. It kind of looks like a little shy kid trying to hide but I am thinking he is doing that because of his teeth. Any of you seen that before? |

| | King of Curt | All the dogs I've ever kept have become restless and obviously annoyed when teething, but I never noticed any stool issues. (That isn't to say that it doesn't happen. ) I would imagine that it could be possible that if the dog is stressing over the mouth pain that it could cause diarrhea, but again, I am not positive on that. |
